If you took the average senbei to Guinness, wouldn't it win the record for the world's largest? I mean, how many companies are making senbei in the world? :)
And Disillusioned, that would be Best Senbei-ist!

Which is why women don't call the city office - the Shame of having your dirty laundry aired in public is so strong in this island safety country that knowing others know about it is enough to stop people from calling.

Where does it say they're going to close the hotline down? It says they're increasing hours that it is open. Although, I admit having a hotline open only during working hours is limiting the number of people who can call.

pawatan,
Yes, you are. Rice grown and sold in Japan is five times more expensive than rice grown in the US (or maybe even Thailand, the world's largest exporter of rice). And it's not the farmers setting the price; it's the government.
As for self-sufficiency, I believe only five or six countries can be completely self-sufficient in food (Australia, Canada, the US, maybe France, Malaysia. I've read Turkey is self-sufficient and East Timor is aiming at agricultural self-sufficiency). The first three have very large industrial-strength agri-businesses and very few (Maybe East Timor) have 80-year-old farmers laboring over a plot of land the size of my office.
While being agriculturally self-sufficient is a good idea (for reasons mentioned above), Japan needs a massive restructuring. This restructuring is not going to be done out of the kindness of the government's heart - unless forced to.

I don't know because this article is too short on details, but I suspect these three were sharing a room in a cheap rental building because none of them could hold onto (or in the case of the 70-year-old, need) a job. Why? Could be the economy; could be a problem on their end. In any case, it seems sad that none of the three had a family willing or able to house them and support them. Sad way to end your life - beaten to death in a residence hotel.

Zichi,
I don't think enough can be grown in Japan; even in the best of times, Japan is only about 60% self-sufficient. And that was before the Tohoku farms were eliminated from the total.

How long does it take a train to stop? Could the engineer not see the bicycles until it was too late? Didn't anyone see the man tossing bicycles?

Good idea, but I wonder how many senior managers consider Woodford the bad guy for ratting out senior management (regardless if he was right or not) and would either refuse to work with him or undermine whatever reforms he instituted. Those types, of course, were probably unaware of the former chairman's illegal accounting, but might still be loyal to the man and not the company.

They're not childless; they have a six-year-old daughter.
Every time they are in public they both seem happy and in love; they seem to enjoy each others company. Seems like a positive role model to me. Better than divorced 'celebs' who had shotgun weddings and two-year marriages.

Nope. Her father, famous actor Toshiro Mifune, was born in 1920. That means Toshiro was 62 when Mika was born.
Plus, Toshiro's in-laws were against him marrying their daughter because:
He married when he was 30 and his wife was 22 - an eight-year span; is that close enough for everyone?
Plus, Toshiro died in 1997 (at 77), when Mika was 15. But Mika's mom was not 57 when Mika was born - Toshiro's wife was 57, but not Mika's mom. Mika's mom was Toshiro's mistress, Mika Kitagawa, an actress who played Kiku in Shogun.

Aonoe (sp?) on Okushiri off the west coast of Hokkaido was wiped off the face of the earth by a combination earthquake, tsunami, and fire in 1993. It seems the houses have all been rebuilt, including the schools. And a monument to the tsunami that destroyed the town 18 years ago. I mean, there are homes less than 200 very flat meters from the tsunami memorial. How smart is that?

NetNinja,
Could you link to a source of Amuro having more than one child? I hadn't heard of she and Atsushi having 'children'. I know she has a son with Sam (Son of Sam? uh oh.) And I don't think their relationship was 'secret' since it was splattered all across the wide shows. And, not to be asking too much, but could you explain how she destroyed her family? (She got divorced and her uncle murdered her mother, I know). Just curious and thanks for providing more information.

Basically I think Mr. Hori missed the group-think that is Japan. Education not only needs to teach about entrepreneurship and business but it also has to promote individualism and creativity.
He also missed the fact that many of the major companies today (Honda, Matsushita, Sony) started when there were no government supports for entrepreneurship. Sony started with five unemployed engineers who couldn't even make a toaster.

This just goes to show that early 1st ~ 4th century Christians knew what they were doing when they usurped the pagan and Roman holidays, especially Dionysus (nickname: The Prince of Peace); and of the Persian sun-god Mithra (birthday: December 25th).
I.e. Everyone likes to party in late December!

Many of the arguments put forth by the anti-TPP people mirror the arguments put forth by people who opposed opening Japan to foreign cars: loss of jobs, can't compete on price, et al. And Toyota was smaller than Nissan and Honda. Now it's bigger than GM.
One thing opening the car market accomplished for Japanese makers was it allowed, encouraged even, them to export their more expensive products, which sold well enough that they could open plants in other countries. And look how many foreign cars you see on the streets.

The Japanese way of thinking that other people will be burdened when, in fact, other people would love to take of them rather than have them murdered in the most painful and sadistic way possible.
However, given than some people in this safety island country don't even notice when their neighbors have been dead for six months, the adults killing their children might be right in thinking other people will be burdened. Cold society, indeed.
