    Editors,

I think you're missing an article in this sentence from the article:

dressed all in white and wearing hat,

    hint: between 'wearing' and 'hat'.

Moderator: That has been corrected, thank you.

    lachatamber,

lol at the gaijin on here crying because japanese people look at them weird for still wearing shorts and flip-flops in November. most people with sense are wrapping up in warm clothes

If the temperature indicates that shorts and flip-flops are appropriate, I wear them, not if the government or a random date on the calendar says I must. That is what people are crying about.

For example, today it's about 23 degrees. Should I wear my ski outfit because it's November 2nd? Or because the government told me to bundle up? It's 23 degrees! If the date were August 2nd, the government would tell me to wear a short-sleeved shirt.

Schools and the government want people to dress appropriate based on a date, not the weather, which strikes some of us as weird.

Just to satisfy SuperLib (you're welcome),

U.S. needs to do a better job of monitoring domestic social networking activity.

So that the US will never experience its own people-generated uprising?

That's how this sounds. Social media led to the downfall of Mubarak and others; we don't want that here, so we need to monitor it.

"See Something, Say Something" campaign that encourages citizens to report suspicious activity.

I remember a trailer park mom calling the Feds on three medical doctors because of something she heard. The doctors ended up losing their residency and had to deal with the Feds for several months before everything was straightened out. Of course, the docs were all dark-skinned as opposed to the trailer park mom.

Well, that didn't take long. I guess Noda won't even last a year. However, instead of concentrating on the real problems facing their country (and screwing it up big time) I'm glad to see the Diet is maintaining its amateur status.

    Darrin,

If she's using romaji for katakana, 'free' is misspelled. If she's using English, like the man is, 'kisu' is misspelled. As she's using Japanese grammar, I suspect it's 'free' that's in error. Well, that's my indepth analysis anyway; more after consulting with a GABA instructor.

Gemba also said the two countries "will move forward talks on the civilian nuclear cooperation pact while paying consideration to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation"

I hope Gemba realizes nuclear weapons and nuclear power generation are two separate endevours with mostly only their names having similarities and that India already has nuclear weapons that they can eliminate if they so wish, without Japan's assistance.

Not yet but when it comes to interacting with a machine, who better than Japanese innovators and engineers to build it? When robots and humans act and react the same, who will be able to tell which is which?

Workers who get suspended for any amount of time tend to quit in shame in this safety island burg; I wonder if he'll quit or he stick it out. And the same question as O'Neill - paid or unpaid leave?

I've probably lived in Japan less than Mr. Hori but I have confidence that none of his proposals will see the political light of day in this century.

Invite competitors on an equal footing?

    Lower taxes?

    Improve education?

What Japan on what planet is he living in? Oh, wait, I can see relaxing the labor laws happening, especially if it means more money for companies and fewer rights for the workers.

people seem to always swerve directly into my path

They do this when I'm walking AND we have made eye contact. Do they want to get walked into by a foreigner?

As for forcing bicyclists onto the street, in ten years time, after they have amassed the data - expect to see the NPA forcing bicycles onto the sidewalk as there were 10,000 accidents resulting in 100 deaths of bicycle-on-car collisions. Consistently high, as it were.

Too bad common sense can't be made legal and enforced.

    Editors,

When the story changes dramatically, instead of just replacing the old story with the new one, perhaps you should start a new story? A lot of comments make no sense given Kikukawa's announcement. I mean, look at the first comment. How does it relate to anything in the story?

He was named as Yukihiro Nomura by his parents. I think the article means to say, "he has been identified as Yukihiro Nomura."

He probably won't spend any time in jail but he will probably lose his license. If he had stopped when first asked, he probably could've kept his license. Interesting logic he used.

Obviously. I mean, the Chairman and Pres are just keeping their own fiefdoms intact and this interloper is threatening to bring it all down.

As any one seen a quarterly report from a publicly-held Japanese company that is mostly owned by Japanese investors? They're jokes when compared to the quarterly reports publicly-held US companies distribute. Little more than pamphlets about their products and facilities.

Japanese families traditionally eat KFC meals at home on Christmas eve

Traditionally? Since the 1600s? or, er. more recently. Like, say, 1990? I know a lot of couples pick up a bucket o' greasy Fried before heading off to the traditional Christmas eve love hotel tryst, but families?

And upon learning that so many are atheists, many ask, “Then how is it possible that the Japanese are so well-mannered and crime is so low?”

Because religion has nothing to do with ethics and doing right by your fellow human.

Most puzzling, but in a town of 28,000 everyone probably goes to the same stores for shopping so no mystery there. And everyone probably lives a few dozen meters from everyone else. In any case, I hope they find the missing two-year-old and mother alive and well.

It's a bit of a pity that education stops once you get "too old" i.e. 24 in Japan. I shocked my students when I told them I was going to graduate school at the age of 30. "We don't do that," was the main response. Good luck with this "old biddy" trying to keep up with people five years young than her. Also, I guess she speaks the English good?
