Dale Berry,
I think North Korea's thinking is most of the Koreans in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were forced slave labor kidnapped from Korea. If Japan hadn't kidnapped them, they wouldn't have been under the bombs when they were dropped. Therefore, Japan should pay for a) kidnapping people, b) using them as slave labor c) causing them to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I think.

From the article:
free airfare.
I suspect the free tickets will be on a Japanese airline. It's a way for the government to subsidize JAL et al without giving them bailout (bad phrase for an airline, eh?) money.

But before he explains, they think a 300-page book on why Japanese people stare at foreigners is pretty credulous?

A company I'm familiar with does something similar for employees of at least one year. Company pays their salary but the worker can study abroad for six months; usually languages but they could study any business-related subject if accepted by the school.

Editors,
Probably better written as "groups with female vocalists." Unless you mean the group uses pre-recorded but invisible female singers in their live performances. Or countertenors.

One million yen. Small potatoes. Consider that in the US, Billy Bob Thornton's daughter just got 20 years in the slammer for the death of a child in her care. Difference? Prosecutors think she killed the child. She said she didn't. In this case it Might be an accident (though continually slamming a child on a mat seems to encourage the accident to happen.)
But still, 1,000,000 yen versus 20 years? Where is the life of a child more precious/important?

Good. Glad to know TEPCO is covering its butt before any investigation. I guess they Have learned something.
Whenever you have employees dying on the job, shouldn't management take a look at what they were doing and, oh, I don't know, think about writing a manual to avoid those 'accidents'. How many TEPCO employees usually die in a six-month period?

I mean, why go into any specifics as to what those features are that address these contemporary needs? And how many times can you say ECO, environmental, and friendly in one paragraph?

zichi,
These days, about 20 minutes. I have to re-boot a lot but fortunately, as gaijinfo points out, there are some interesting apps I use to help, i.e. iDrink followed closely with iSleep (iPassout Lite, as it were).

I have a similar app but I call it MyBrain. Because, in my first year in Japan, I was
so I did something I developed called iStudy. Once I iStudied, I put the kanji I learned and remembered in my MyBrain. Very handy - I usually have it with me when walking the streets.

I didn't know that garbage pit had a name. And despite the - probably months - of effort that went into choosing a new name, I still don't find it charming or clean. But if it makes the merchants' association happy, and gave them an excuse to go drinking, well, who cares?

Is this decision based on science or politics? Is this decision made by the same government that has continually lied about radiation or by a completely independent agency?

I think the writer meant to write:
I have a feeling that the penalty in Japan would be a suspended sentence and a 'heart-felt' apology.
Also the headline is misleading. They aren't forgoing their pay. They're forgoing a certain percentage (25 - 50%) for three months. I'm sure their reduced pay is still higher than your average salariman, though.

The most palatable firings I have run across included the current company introducing those about to be fired to another company who needed employees; also, I've seen the current company help finance re-education for those about to be let go - so they could get a marketable skill. Basically, the company did what they could to help the person find another job. A generous severance package also helps.

I fully expect to see Edano wrapped up in a scandal soon. One that will force him to resign from METI and perhaps keep him from becoming prime minister next year. TEPCO knows an enemy when they see it and responsible leadership is one. They'll work overtime finding something on Edano just to get him out of the picture.

I'm constantly confused as to why beaches in Japan insist on having loudspeakers blaring JPop at distorted volumes when the sound of the waves smashing or rushing up the sand is better.
When I find a beach without the Jpop and crowds, I keep it to myself, not write about it.
Earlier this summer a friend wrote to me about the beauty of Shimoda and I felt like checking it out.

I believe Mr. Shindo should look at car companies, electronics manufacturers, textile makers, and tire manufacturers to see how strong a sense of responsibility some Japanese companies have to their workers. And the part about
means labor costs. And as labor costs rise, companies seek cheaper employees (be they imported Japanese-Brazilians or overseas).
However, since he was probably addressing the people of Kamaishi, his vote of support for them is admirable.
