Cleo, you brought a tear to my eye as I reflected on my dear Dobie. She was sweet, adorable and docile. It is all about training and it took very little time for her to understand and adjust to the workings of the family and society.

tkoind2: "Once law, Japan will comply." And to quote a double positive that becomes a negative, yeah, right!

    "to tuck his shirt in."

Wasn't this also an infraction by one of the Japanese males at the winter Olympics? I didn't realize how serious this problem has become.

"sit on the floor with their legs under them"

Glad I got to sit on the floor with my legs over me.

Growing number!? Yep, after the first case study of lonely 38-yr-old Keiichi, "Spa" added a second case study, 37-yr-old Eiji. Wow! Can't argue with the title: "growing number of men ..." coz the math doesn't lie. Spa actually doubled it. Then, Spa continues: “I have lots of close friends,” boasted one Spa! writer as the editors batted around ideas for the feature."' I wonder, in Spa's batting around ideas for the feature, exactly where and how they decided to conduct their poll of 300 men so they could arrive with a 30 plus%. Choose the right situation and you can make a "feature" fit your argument.

The Marion, Semper Fi Marine, I was with 3rd recon at Schwab before going to Nam, but that was before Nixon returned the island. Hope they get this Futenma mess sorted out and life can get back to normal for you (and everyone there). Wasn't there long enough, I guess, but sure have great memories as Okinawa is my first experience of living far from home.

Skip: I saw in the news several months ago where a 40 something year old American man, who had lost his job and consequently former health insurance, joined the US army so that he and his family could have health insurance, especially important for his very sick wife. He was on his way to war. While I found that story so very sad, I, nonetheless, applaud the man for not looking for a handout. While I won't argue with Cleo that there are some who have not had a level-playing field, there are far too many who would prefer living on the dole simply because it is available.

"The resolution now goes to the full House, where prospects for passage are uncertain." Ya think?! It squeaked by 23-22 in the committee hearing. Sure is good to see that the Foreign Affairs Committee has actually found something constructive to debate, what with like no real problems in the world today. So what happens if/after it passes?

"Sumo is a unique" Oh really? Of course we know that Japan is unique and the Japanese are unique. That is why I came here so my freakishness would stick out in the unique crowd.

In another article in the crime section, a 17-yr-old is called a boy and an 18-yr-old is called a man. So exactly at what age does a girl become a woman?

hehehehe, sushi cites John, oops, I mean Jon Stewart. What a joke. Glad I got my 40 qtrs of work in the US before I immigrated to Japan. Will be eligible for medicare and soc sec if/when I choose to return to the US. Meanwhile, perhaps half of America (I would wager it is a lot less) wants millions who haven't paid 40 qtrs worth of dues into the system to get medical coverage because ... (sorry I always get lost when people try to explain ...)

NationalistRE: "Not let MacArthur take have my head, same goes for my children." I assume your quote here is you putting words in someone else's mouth, and not his actual words. I also assume I need not use an UPPER CASE "H" when I write the word "his" since you have demoted Showa from a God-like figure to "the greatest filth of them all." Sadly, thousands died on both sides in that bloody event. I do wonder how many of the 21,500 Japanese soldiers were killed in action and how many took their own lives, especially since I just read that over 30,000 Japanese took their own lives, for that seems to be engrained in this culture, too.

Fadamor: Yes the article has apparently been edited because I copied and pasted the quoted statement in my first post: "The Marines flew in trucks" but apparently the editor has missed your question or isn't interested in commenting on it. I remember chuckling when I read that, picturing a squad of Marines in the back of an airborne duece and a half.
