paragraph four: "While the total number of recalled items was relatively small and no injuries were reported, the head of the commission says the civil penalty and consent decree barring imports sends a message." Wow! If this is the fine for recalled toys that hurt no one, I am beginning to feel for Toyota.

I thought Japanese women were hung up on Mister Donut until I read this article. I am not sure anymore who they are hung up on but I can nonetheless imagine that no matter which one they marry, they end up hanging him out to dry while waiting for his death, at least another article implies that.

Brainiac: "The Crying Game" is a great choice, but I'm going to keep that as number 2 and stick with Titanic.

Ossan: I did not state that Marines gave up their lives for other Asian nations. My statement is a cause/effect: Marines gave up their lives (of course for the US), and in so doing, many Asian nations no longer .... I am a former Marine and know why we fight.

"Existing Toyota owners who buy another vehicle from the company will receive two years of free maintenance," Toyota said. Should this read "who trade for another vehicle from the company"? Wow! Guess the recession is truly over if we are back to two cars in every garage. Rented a Toyota on Saturday and loved it, but certainly wouldn't own a car in Tokyo.

bokudayo: yep, good move coz the flip of the coin on that one is easy to see: heads he wins, tails you lose. I see those military heel turns everywhere I go. Your being on a bike (and foreign) automatically makes the pedestrian in the right.

I loved the ambiguity in the statement "The Marines flew in trucks".
NationalistRE: And because many Marines gave up their lives, other Asian nations no longer have to endure the humiliation of being occupied by Japan.

Cultures collide. Amen to that! Am I the only one who witnessed Toyoda shed tears in the US when he addressed workers at a Toyota plant last week? Wonder if he'll cry during his apology to China's customers?

I don't feel sorry for Mr. Toyoda and I hope Japan continues to watch this serious incident very closely because dozens have died and even more have been injured and it will take much more time to look at property damage etc and decide fair compensation in addition to the new floor mats already distributed.

I knew this would happen. Just the other day a report said police would begin making records of all complaints and just like that a police notebook is nicked.

seems to be some missing info here. An NHK report says the culprit spoke only in English. If that is true, then back to the drawing board on this accent thread.

Wonder if it's in the local library yet. Been a tough year here, too, but a free read is the only handout I'm looking for.
