Been a fan of Nadeshiko for at least 8 years and great to see their recent successes.

But the mainstream media (not necesssarily the sports media) "playing safe" reporting of the team is a mystery.

For example this week before the Australia game there was a focus on the "tall" Oz side esp one player who stood at the formidable height of 173cm - WOW! No mention that Japan as the world champions saw off the truly tall American, European teams earlier this year. Or a report on how the teams hotel door bell was being rung the night before so the players were tired.

The media loves to bathe itself in the teams glory but hasn't got the stamina to call it as it is. Even this morning some in the media referring to the own goal as "their" goal because it "glanced" the defenders or it put pressure on the defenders or whatever.

Just say it as it was - a great kick weakly blocked by the goalie, then unbelievably deflected / knocked in by the NK defender.

Sadly much of the johnny-come-lately media still doesn't understand "sport".

Smoking caused diseases, esp heart disease, lung cancer, diabetes complications, circulatory & respiratory diseases take a good few decades to arise.

Smoking rates going down now will not save those who have been addicted for much of their lives.

Lung cancer in Japan has passed stomach cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths. It HAS NOT peaked yet.

Learned opinion suggests it may in a decade or so.

Disbelievers are so impatient. Wait and you will see.

Frungy - some serious faults with your smoking analysis.

A more thorough investigation will reveal significant authorative data re smoking and dis-ease.

No conspiracy, No cover-up - just facts.

    Shouldn't be too hard.

Worried - you appear to have a few issues with men who marry japanese women.

Perhaps you know of some troubling situations, but attempting to put forth an acceptable argument while tarring men with the one almighty brush doesn't add much credibility to your whines.

Try and seek out some of the successful partnerships out there and surprise yourself.

Actually Japan's International relationships are more open, trusted and stronger now than they have been for many years.

Helped of course by the current tragedy, but many hard working members have earned the respect of other countries.

Kan, while being a "media fizzler", is no more inept than the countless dummies before him and now. In fact he certainly surpasses most for being honest.

The rabid ldp is worried his good relationships with the international community might thwart their "overthrow" plan, hence the increase in villifying the "devil".

    pamelot - my sentiments exactly.

What a revelation. Some men become distracted by beautiful women.

I'd like a grant to do a follow up study.

They've actually been friends for quite a long time(Early Prez Bill days) and apparently always kept in touch.

    So nothing special here.

Unbelievable - but according to govt statistics, 25%, that's 1 in 4 of residential houses in Japan are vacant.

A Hollowing Out of society, probably unprecedented in modern non-at-war countries anywhere in the world.

Gurukun - I agree with most of the above opinions, but I think your suggestion is probably the most significant reason.

A "How Dare they/he/she..." attitude was stirred.

Like when Horae-mon challenged the status-quo a few years back.

    The devil incarnate.

Saborichan - you comments on the borrowing and exchanging(2 ways) of techniques, plots and ideas is common in all aspects of artistic endeavour. Music, Film, Art, Architecture, etc.....!

But that falls well short of supporting kujiranikusuki's assertion that, "Usually westerns are based off Samurai movies".

Moderator: Back on topic please. "True Grit" has nothing to do with samurai movies.

kujiranikusuki - that's a classic comment - "Usually Westerns are based off Samurai movies"

What all the 100's & 100's of 'em???

A handful of remakes & inspirations.

Need something more substantial to qualify that - like some facts.

herefornow - "...reponsible govt. certainly not since Koizumi left office."

That's worth storing in the quotable quotes archives.

And Kan is hardly alone in "the grabbing @ popular straws" crowd. It's the staple diet of political officiandos - esp here.

"Countries" don't usually make movies - esp in the democratic world.

Most popular movies (as listed) are made by individuals or private consortiums who express their own leanings, even in a so called "based on fact" story.

Nations as entities can't be held responsible.

Lummox's post is to the point.

And I'd add that ALL movies are fictional representations unless definitively stated otherwise - never!

So I suggest people drop the baggage and enjoy the creativity of films and primarily base ones likes & dislikes on the "cinematic experience."

South K vs Aust. - "...better team without a doubt"???

The neutral commentators(British) I listened to all said Aust should have been at least 2 goals up at half time. Very slopppyyy finishing by Aust saved SK for sure.

    Wow - Oz & Iraq - what a game. Tough & Tense.

Even with some unpolished finishing & passing at times, that was the highest level game I've seen to date. 2 very competitive teams.

Next weeks games look the goods.
