roomtemp - The top ten is The Top Ten in the world.

World class usually is understood to be playing/achieving/competing/working in the highest "group" in the world.

For example many olympic athletes are world class, but they certainly will never win a medal or even rank in the top ten.

There are exceptions to this, but I believe the term world class is generally understood as such.

Whether Schwarzer is world class or not I don't know, but if he was the Saudi goalie against Japan, rest assured the scoreline would have been markedly different. He is in that class.

    Just watched the highlights again.

Wow - those goals were like at practice - absolutely no pressure.

The Saudi goalie basically allowed every goal.

A breezer for the Samurai and not much to be expected from Qatar next round. Valiant hearted maybe but should be a softie for Japan.

Congrats to Japan. Some deft footwork for sure.

But keeping it all in perspective. How more abysmal could the Saudi team be?

Defence - What defence??? The goal keeper was embarrassingly out of it.

And I suspect Japan's weakness may well be when their own defence is under attack from a real surging pressuring side.

They certainly haven't been tested by quality opposition in this group, so looking forward to seeing them strut their stuff against the bigger boyz.

And she has the utmost admiration & respect from her peers.

    She's no snot-blower.

As others have said - we don't know the exact circumstances - BUT running a red light (as the article mentions) IS serious business.

Unfortunately the authorities rarely clamp down on it and it has entered the mind-set of many drivers as "the done thing".

    Penalize red light runners heavily.

CrazyJoe - seen that on 3 occasions.

Kids standing on the rear seats, heads out of the vehicles.

    Breathtakingly moronic parents.

Yesterday in my prefecture was the festive season drive safely campaign. It involved drivers randomly being given a "present" from a clown santa-san and asked to drive carefully with the obligatory deep bow.

    Geeeezzzz!!!

Neeed some real life shock therapy CMs to jolt these grossly negligent parent/carer drivers.

Like pizza faced 2yr olds after being launched into the windscreen.

Or shots of a hospital wards juvenile cranio-facial department (where my friend worked) and see the joyous results of unrestrained child passengers.

And I'm NOT joking and I mean it.

    They just don't get it.

    Stupefying!

Friends of mine - a lovely couple (Japanese) have been doing volunteer work at a shelter/orphanage for years. They grew quite attached to a little girl - orphaneed - and she came to their house for special visits, xmas etc.

They finally decided they'd like to adopt her.

    BUT -

the girls aunt (who had next to nothing to do with the child) and who as the closest adult relative, refused permission - because she couldn't stand the thought of her living with "other blood".

She wouldn't take the girl in herself but preferred her to be institutionalized rather than brought up by strangers.

    Just cruel.

".......she had grown into a woman since her recent marriage".

????? At 33years of age、she only became a woman after September???

A classic comment, only from those who think they've got their finger on the pulse.

Strange thing about this story is,

Yes - they had the foresight to move 100,000 eggs to a southern lake, but rather unscientifically, it seems they didn't monitor the situation at all - re extinct or not.

The local fishermen have been catching them for years and simply called them "black salmon".

No one bothered to ask them???

sk4ek - last year I was in touch with pimo about their ST model(I think).

Great machine - but there was a waiting list and it appears it would not have been legal in Japan. Because of it's power it would be classed as a motor bike so would need all the necessary add ons & functions for compliance.

The current legislation here re electric transport needs a big overhaul.

Zenny - re Hold On - my comments were about How much Japan consumes - not catches.

The facts are there, the data easily available to all. It's acknowledged by the relevant officials in Japan. There's no twisting.

As stated - simply 2% of the world(Japan) consumes 25% of the world's tuna.

Zenny - as Herefor said it's 80%+ Of Atlantic Blue Fin.

Not a % of the total tuna catch, although I believe it's about the same % for all Blue Fin.

The total consumption of world stocks by Japan is a more respectable(?) 25% or so, consumed by 125m peeps out of 6,000+m.

That is 2% eats 25% of ALL tuna & 2% eats 80%+ of ALL blue fin.

By the same token you never hear Japanese referring to French, German, American etc cuisine as ethnic.

Ethnic in Japan means colourful 3rd world clothes and trinkets.

In my city most public rubbish bins were gradually removed from more than 10 years ago.

A uni professor friend who consults for the city and prefecture on environmental matters told me they were sick of people dumping rubbish around the bins. I can recall overflowing cesspools in the central park. attracting crows, pigeons, stray cats & dogs.

They are rare now but near my house is a cemetery which provides rubbish recepticles for old graveside flowers, offerings etc. And without fail it regularly gets topped up with heaps of "other" rubbish. They can't close it down because it's a service to the cemetery visitors.

I'm still amazed at how much illegal rubbish dumping/throwing out on the streets, parks etc happens here.

And park benches. Actually in my city over the last decade, benches and resting places have become more common. Same friend said it's part of the user friendly streetscape plans now being implemented. Could do with more but it's happening.

So I guess every place makes decisions on local needs and reqirements.

Congratulations to all 3 winners. Their work has had significant impact in the manufacturing world of pharmaceuticals, plastics, electronics....

One point to keep in mind though, as is often the case, their ground breaking work was achieved decades ago and because there is a literal "waiting queue" of scientists in the Nobel Awards, only now has their efforts been recognized.

And it appears unfortunately that the major commercialization of these technologies has occured outside of Japan.

A shrimp is a little weedy guy. A shrimp burger?

Now a prawn is more "lobster-esque" so a prawn burger is naturally yummy.

But I have serious doubts about this particular mayo confection.

kyoken - I agree with you - but would have to add the industrialized east to the industrialized west, otherwise people might think you're biased.

And yes, the worlds (and most certainly by the proverbial mile Japans) favorite fish should be focussed on by all those concerned with food safety.

But I think the last time it was brought up here, it kinda got filed in the "important things we must do when all the other important things are done" file.

As stated many times before - if certain folk want to hunt, kill, eat known contaminated dolphin, then go for it.

Even if it attracts negative publicity, I'd say - Do what you Gotta do!

But just don't play this BS card it's against Japan.

Plenty and I mean Plenty of Japanese people want shite to do with this. As I have repeated here time after time, Japanese friends I know are so livered over the killing that I almost gotta calm 'em down and tell them look at the "Bigger Picture". But no. They are hell bent on seeing this as evil.

So PLEEEEZZ keep the "We Japanese" bit way out of it.

And truly I hold no ill feelings for those who want to eat dolphin and feed it to their loved ones. None whatsoever.

zenny11 - the more sea parks = more experience = the better - in your opinion.

please come to my regional city and witness the "experienced" dolphin handlers put their charges through the hoops and other oh so fascinating activities for all the ooohhhh, aahhhing crowd.

And especially marvel at how they manage to do all of this with the "kawaii" dolphins in the confines of a tank suited for goldfish.

What accumulated knowledge such trainers display.

Fact is world wide aquariums are not particularly hospitable places for the captive - and I don't mean audiences - and especially so here in Japan where the the dolphin industry thrashes between hunting/selling/eating and cloying adoration for cuteness.

Just some of the locals can't see it, because .........???
