Loki520 - could you please expand on your dissing of Gaga.

Is it based on rational, in-the-know facts or is it just your personal "jeez, I think..."???

Many artists music/persona doesn't grab me, but that doesn't mean they are talentless.

tabana - Gaga is hardly just a clothes hanger. She is a designer (clothes, sets..), she's a dedicated musician, she's a great singer, she's a great songwriter, she's a great dancer and performer.

Not really attributes to group with the jonny set.

And I do agree with your choice of jonnies as being pretty hard to take.

    Thanks flavorfav.

Re the hockey - Maybe I got my times crossed - if so that's my fault.

Was it on BS NHK or normal NHK?

flavorfav - now who's doing the grasping?

I simply stated that on the media I observed and read(this article included) nowhere was the amazing might of the German teams effort recognised. No details of their unbelievable come from behind last lap. Simple. And irregardless of the media source, this article is obviously pruned for A Japanese audience.

Celebrate your own teams great accomplishment in winning the silver, but please present the WHOLE story, even in short.

The tv media of course was much worse in it's narrow review. Which seems to be confirmed by the fact that the final event, the US vs Canada hockey final was not covered. Already being billed as the greatest Olympic game in history, but not a sniff in. But plenty of morning programs disecting the skating loss.

Sure it's a local market, but it's an INTERNATIONAL event. Flex a little.

What is missing from this article and from many other written articles and tv programs has been the lack of praise for the oposition.

Nowwhere does it state how Brilliant the German team were, overcoming a deficit of seconds (a huge gap in this sport) and still a second behind at the final lap.

As close as it was - Synchronised perfection = GOLD.

The Japanese poular media, especially those with apparently little sport competition nouse, should try to admire some of the greatness of other athletes instead of searching for excuses wrapped in regret.

Other world media are also similarly focused at times, but the Japanese medias slant really makes one squirm at times.

Figure skating in 2010 is not football ie the ball goes in the goal you get a point and if it doesn't you don't get a point.

Some posters should do some of the necessary research on the complex scoring system to see how scores are determined, It's not an infallible system but understanding the basics will give greater insight into the final result.

Figure skating is scored from the first note to the final. It doesn't award prizes for the best tricks.

And yes Yuna's score was certainly breathtaking - but then so was her performance. Please really look at it again.

I've had 5 toyotas and currently own one. My next car will be a toyota.

But I'm under no illusions that ToyotaInc runs well. It's political and social clout is enormous. It uses the sub-contract system (as do others) as it's own fiefdom to bully, coerce and dispose of at will. This is not unknown. It operates similarly with it's US branches - everything ruled by ToyotaInc as an extension of it's domestic manner.

Honda America by contrast run an independent operation dealing with the nuances and problems of the American market largely by themselves because they live, work, and breathe in the American market. They have by all accounts far less of the woes befalling ToyotaInc.

Time for the Great Toyota to reflect and this circus in the US is one way to ensure they will. Political agendas & gains aside - this situation has at least forced Toyata to openly confront itself - which I believe would not have happened if left to a superficial glossing over in Japan.

sushisake No US company would testify because there is no comparative system operating in Japan.

However to muse speculatively - if for example GE General Electric's biggest market in the world worth billions was in Japan and they had many manufacturing plants, dealerships, subsidiaries etc employing 200,000 Japanese citizens and their products malfunctioned and killed scores of people, would the head of GE come here to explain and apologize.

We don't know, but not to do would be as I posted earlier - at their own peril.

sushisake - it's pretty much on record that the womans account is true - you can easily find the info.

And re your conspiracy(to be) leanings - open congress hearings occur often in the states irregardless of the people, company and issues. They are part of that system and would be derelict in duty not to investigate more deeply. Like it or not that's the way.

And as Toyoda is head of a company building cars in american factories employing american labor following american laws and selling the products to american citizens, he should naturally offer to explain details on points that are attracting suspicion. Fact: the american market is the bright light of toyota - there is no doubt.

    Ignoring it would be perilous.

Curling as a competitive activity pre-dates all other winter sports by centuries. Formal rules were set and competitions held yonks ago.

If more people curled instead of y'oll duding themselves then we'd have much less angst in the world.

    Curl it baby.

michaelqtodd - thanks for your comments, but you are still playing the - "Well you should have known better" card. Bit school maamish.

And I definitely don't want you to apologize for being +ive. It's
certainly worked for you. Good luck for the future.

But you still seem to think that everyones problems fit neatly in one box and the magic wand of positivism will solve all.

And if it doesn't then you're a complainer, or a loser or a result of your own failings.

Re my example and your reasoning - no one should ever marry if the prospective father in law is an ass-hole. I"m sure millions of happy marriages would never have eventuated following such wisdom.

You make some good points, but your thinking is not the be all and end all.

nigelboy - where did I for one moment suggest such a situation is confined to the realms of Japan? Where?

I simply told the story because it was relevant to the main story at hand - ie in Japan.

And I was more put off by michaelqtodd's percieved air & tone in mentioning that his way is the way and will work (not stated - but implied)and further more allaying blame where a bit of compassion may have served his opinion in better stead..

I said it's good to try all manners and methods BUT all situations are unique. So I suggested his approach would have quite possibly failed big time in my friends case.

    That's all.

michaelqtodd - what worked for you may not necessarily be the panacea for all such situations. Of course if possible try anything, if it may prove to be positive in the long term. BUT your case of relative positivism is only relative to you, and is simply advice to others - not an absolute.

A simple anecdote - friend marries J. woman. Great couple in love. Her father (a racist bigot who is also a mid size company owner) violently opposes it from the start. The mother & grandmother like my friend but will not cross their husband / son. The father calls around and beats up my passive friend on at least 2 occasions over 2 years. She becomes pregnant, the father forbids his other adult daughters (married) to have any children because the family blood has now been desecrated. Father tries to smash the house and beat up the friend again. Beautiful baby is born. Friend & wife are so happy. My friend refuses to act against the fathe because he will take it out on his mother and wife. One day the mother & grandmother come to see him privately with a BIG wad of money and tell him to go home because they are fearful of the husband's actions. Life has been hell for them for 5 years. The daughter cries & cries. One week later my friend comes home and no wife, no baby. One brief contact after by mother in law. She is so sorry, but life cannot continue unless he - my friends - leaves Japan. He does because he loves his wife and baby. 9 years later no contact.

Maybe he just shoulda sent those flowers - eh?

Or given a few 1,000 positive Om Mane Padme Hums - eh?

Don't browbeat others with your self-success.

I truly hope they bring him to Japan.

The ensuing circus would be the highlight of the year.

And the world's media focussing on the plight of the poor old whalers would surely bring lots of sympathy to their cause. lol

    I can't wait.

Actually Sanuki is the old name for Kagawa and real "SANUKI UDON" is only made in Kagawa. Like champagne is from Champagne.

The Sanuki Pilgrimage in Kansai is just a rip off of the very successful campaign being conducted in Kagawa for a number of years now. 100,000's of visitors partake in Sanuki Udon Pilgrimages every year coming from all over Japan.

If you want the real experience you'd better get to Kagawa.

    judaisers -

by your reasoning - "when in Rome...." and this is a "cultural thing" - then the women who brought back(abducted) their children from foreign countries to japan should have followed such advice.

ie - followed the laws of the countries they were living in and abided by those countries cultural mores.

They shouldn't have expected such countries to be "little japans".

Atheism is the only true religion.

If all parties in Nigeria were to see beyond their blindness and false light and convert to the TRUTH, then joy would overcome them as they viewed their fellow humans as equal beings on this planet.

Timeon - No. But alcohol cm's are much more strictly regulated (self or govt. I don't know). The party party, happy happy, gulp gulp, ah.....ah...., type ads that are the norm here, would not be approved in most modern countries.

Alcohol arguably the worlds # 1 social lubricant (social drug), responsible for so many social ailments, needs to be carefully monitored by those connected.

I drink, but I don't need to have it pushed on me.
