Wars and mismanagement are very expensive (it's a form of tax and spend). Who is going to pay for them? The poor? They are the ones who die because of wars, lose their jobs because of mismanagement, don't have access like the better off. Fancy arguments abound, but the bills still have to be paid.

adaydream it may seem like a rogues gallery, but the US is still big picture more reliable than Russia. US citizens are not flocking out of country because of fear of state. Or American critics of Washington do not fear a bullet to the head (exhibit A: Limb.... whatever). Even Bush was not nearly as bad for civil liberties as Putin has and is. America has its problems, for sure, but it isn't in the same league as Russia.

I do not trust Russia. I think Russia is a sleeping bear that could do serious damage to America. It already has its tentacles in Europe - killing of critics, shutting of energy supplies etc.

Strange that she died alone so young of pneumonia. I have to wonder if she had HIV/AIDS given the stigma this disease has in Japan, her former job in AV, and her work with AIDS awareness. Only speculation of course.

And can anyone say they were surprised? The surprise would have been that Bush & Co. never tortured etc.

bushlover in America is not public protest a hallmark of a free society? Why would you object to someone pushing for freedom in unfree China? I think you love the idea of freedom but, like the object of your love, have no idea what it means in reality.

So what about the citizens who aided and abetted these immigrants? Who hired them? Obviously there is a local demand for such persons.
Just because a person breaks the law, the state does not have the right to mete out any form of punishment it wants. Part of the reason the US exists today was the excessive exercise of executive power (from both state and church in those days) where death penalties were liberally given and carried out, corporal punishment rife and liberties non-existent. Yet despite this legacy I am will to bet that some of the pro-whipping crowd on this board are Americans who forgot their legacy and cheer on the whipping of other people. Indeed, the notion of liberty is slipping away before our eyes.

And your point is...? The US economy today is that largest in history period. When it falls apart, it gets very expensive very quick. What? Did you think that when everyone said the markets are crashing it was just a neat TV reality show? I think part of the problem is that some of you have yet to wake up to the fact that money is lost and money will have to be spent regardless who is in power.

Of course asking questions and making informed decisions are fine - never said nor implied that they weren't, so put away your strawman. The preceding post I was responding to did not have a question or a decision, so there was nothing to avoid or take off the table. Whatever the radical left does has about influence with me as the radical right - both are wacked in the head and need treatment (a dose of reality perhaps).
As to Obama, grown ups on both sides seem to recognize that America is not out of the woods and Obama's policies may fail, not for the lack of trying. The ideological babies in the sandbox are just throwing dirt because that's all they can do.

Dante only visited Hell, how else could his story be told? If Dante welcomes Obama, then it is from Paradise.
Regardless of Obama's political stripes, he is addressing the real problems facing America. Bush & Co. had 8 years and all we hear is excuses ala "We got it wrong", "Who knew?", or "It was Clinton" (that's my favourite). So b!tch and moan all you want, Obama is in power because the so-called party of business didn't get a damned thing done. The American voter wanted real leadership, do suck it up.

Ahhh Sarge the Americans were complicit in their support of Saddam when he was doing his nasty to the Kurds, Shiites and others.

likeitis I would never say Iran is "fluff" but I certainly do recognize that some go crazy at the mention of Iran for no good reason.
Talk to a Russian about Russia. Those who actively and publicly protest the Russian gov't get a public execution - read the papers. Normally, millions of people do not leave their home country if everything to going great. This should be a cause of concern since Russia has already shown that it is willing to export control over its citizens (eg in the UK).
I have heard that what is going on inside Russia today (and unreported) is a tightening grip that makes Stalin look like Ghandi's best friend. Perhaps an exaggeration but certainly not as benign as you seem to think.
I am less concerned with Ogama's "broken promises" than his ability to stop America from losing influence. I believe Russia will be a major problem in a few words. I hope I am wrong.

I am not that spooked by Iran. I am however very concerned about Russia. Millions of Russian left because of poverty when Yeltsin was in power; millions are now leaving because thugs rule and one pays for dissent with one's life.
Yes, the Cold War is indeed over, this is a whole new game in which the main player has no particular ideology to sway or cajole - unless machiavelli-ism can be called an ideology. Bush and his band of idiot were also players, we'll have to see how Obama responds (and China too).

Hey you naysayers, do you know where Iraq is? The US will always have a military presence as long as there is oil and Israel to protect. But the US will also stay because Iran is just next door and Russia is exerting its influence all over the region. Just because Bush ran into Iraq/conducted his War on Terror (however you want to call it) without adequate forethought (or just plain thought) does not mean Obama has to pull out in the same way.

**What an incredibly stupid thing to say. ** Who caused the current financial crisis and is now going to Washington with hat in hand seeking billions and billions? But how dare anyone improve a healthcare system that leaves 10s of millions of people without coverage! Welfare for the rich is not an example of Darwinism ... it's called cronyism.

Why not just stop making guns? Surely there are enough guns already.

Sarge, People immigrate to the US for its health care? Never heard that one before, but since immigration to the US is legal that should not be a huge issue.
Why do you hoot and holler about gov't health care? With 10s of millions of people without health care it does not appear that for profit health care has delivered the goods. But I suppose ideology is more important than reality for some (on both sides).
