So Good lorb what is the common sense? Something did happen. Blackwater Contractors did shoot and kill civilians. While they claim self-defense there seems to be enough evidence to suggest otherwise hence the charges and the subsequent news story which we all opine on. Civilians where killed and there needs to be an accounting of that fact.

My take on it is the fact that Bush and Cheney were key players in creating the loose rules under which the contractors operated. This is part of their legacy and a shame on America. Of course that is opinion, something you seem to frown upon.

Of course no one forced these guys to become mercenaries, my point is that the soldiers Bush and Cheney love to heap honors on - either rhetorical or actual - are considered by both war-avoiding hawks (in their youth that is) expendable as mercenaries. Bush and Cheney had a lot to do with setting the ground rules - or the lack there of - where these former "heroes" operated. Hence my calling this as part of their legacy.

You do not have to be a lefty to recognize the incredible amount of damage these two have done to America and to the military. Refusal to do so will only prolong the recovery of both. Perhaps that is what TooFarGone wants.

    The Bush-Cheney Legacy

Take brave and decorated soldiers and put them in a conflict without discipline or oversight and watch them fall apart. Later watch them try to reclaim the honor they lost.

It is sad and amazing what America has become under Bush-Cheney.

While expectations are high for Obama to move America back to sanity, I will wait for results and ignore the hype.

Leave it to Japan's sports "reporters" (and that includes TV) to distract the athletes and contribute to poor performances. Whether it is harassing them over invasions of privacy (Ai-chan's love life) or changing schedules to suit J-TV (football game played in 40 degree heat) leave it to J-media to record every moment of defeat - after all it is their defeat too, but too dim to realize it.

Where are all the political correct people many on this board are complaining about? Certainly there is not a large number of them not a significant minority. All this is tearing down of the PC strawman is as tiresome as the false choice presented by the survey questions (which gets asked every year in some form - part or the seasonal festivities).

Like many people here I really do not care one way or another - I use both forms depending on the context without getting righteous about it.

This will be interesting. With the election of Obama the stature of the US has risen significantly in South America. Seems like Venezuela may end up isolating itself from its neighbours. About time.

This visit was planned when petro dollars were being made by the tanker full, but now both Russia and Venezuela are caught up with everyone else in the collapsing economy. Sabre rattling is expensive - cheaper than war mind you, but it does not sell so well at home when jobs are going bust.

wind bags harping on anti-scientific theories of "man made" global warming

Yeah, we all know that humans did not cause acid rain, ground water contaminations, Chinese carp infestations, farm land salinations, food contaminations, and other so-called spoilations of the environment. We as a species have no effect on our environment. We are not responsible for global warming or any other phenomena that casts a negative light on human activity.

The same people grilling me here are probably the ones who were calling for Alberto's firing.

That is what is called a non sequitar. Alberto's inability to do his job has nothing to do with the Elian case.

The irony is staggering. Supposedly anti-family liberals reunited Elian with his father. While the so-called pro-family conservatives wanted to destroy an already devastated family in pursuit of ideology.

The right call was made. The family unit was respected over ideology. Holder may not be the best candidate for AG but the Elian case is not the issue to defeat his nomination.

The social problem you are all looking for is called A-L-C-O-H-O-L. Its use and abuse are at the root of most of the results of Japan's social ills.

skip Ok I better understand your position. I'll get off my high-horse.

My rather obtuse point about American (or any other) cultural imperialism is that there will always be one. It is rather difficult to define American cultural imperialism because it is so pervasive; kind of like a fish trying to understand the influence of water (or even more basic the concept of water).

As for predicting how the Chinese or the Indians would act as world leaders is a bit difficult to divine. Go back 10 years ago before Monica and Clinton was prez., very few would have imagined the last 8 years under Bush. No one even knows what is going to happen this week and how the election in the US will after world events. India has had its Gandhi and may have another in the offing. China has had many unsung martyrs for freedom, one day a leader will may rise from among their ranks. I am less concerned about who rises and who falls and more concerned, like you, with the structure of that power. Bush & Cheney have shown the limitations of even the best of ideals.

skipthesong your Caribean-ness does not mean you don't say racist things. You seem to imply in your original post that the problem with China and India are the people of China and India. If you meant something else [like how the Chinese government mistreats minorities within its borders] then take care in what you say lest you be misunderstood.

As for not being Chinese or Indian, well we are not Americans either and we are constantly reminded how much better off they are. The imposition of the American Way is a form of cultural imperialism which individuals can do very little to change. I am suggesting that what you find scary is already happening: don't believe me? Start kicking against the American Way and find out how far you get.

Whether it is America or someone else there will always be some leviathan power.

50? subtract 20 million who, like obama's aunt, are in the country illegally.

So 30 million people without health insurance is OK?

millions of americans in their teens and twenties don't bother to purchase insurance.

That 30 million are just young people too lazy to buy health insurance? Well that is a scandel! Why isn't that fact reported? Where is the GOP on this?

education? we spend more than any country in the world but the staunchly democrat teachers unions are opposed to any real accountability in the profession.

I hear ya, the lack of accountability in American business and politics is just as depressing.

obama chaired a foundation that gave away 150 million to chicago schools and even their internal assessment of the program declared it was an academic failure, neglecting to mention it was more about radicalizing young children than actually teaching them.

Well, other than real radicals, who would state as their goal to radicalize young children? Mmmm keep trying I am sure you'll find truth someday.

sailwind hate to break it to you after such an eloquent rehearsing of the right-wing talking points for the last generation or so. Even with the social safety net stifling American progress, America has become the strongest and richest nation in the history of the world. Are you not going to credit the American people their hard work and ingenuity despite the safety net that, in part, allows them to focus on innovation and progress?

And I wont even start on the socialization of American capitalism which has dropped the pretense of being anything than a big baby on the government tax teat. Did the threat of failure keep American capitalism on the straight and narrow?

Sarge, the equation is [Candidate's Name] got the kiss of death when he was endorsed by [Insert Name]

But of course you were joking when you inferred that Hilton's endorsement of Obama is as damaging to Obama as Cheney's endorsement of McCain.

Or are you going say that you were not inferring either?

Size reduction may be the only way to go if consumers are jittery about spending. This may be good news in America where almost everything is over-sized and over-packaged. Now is the time to reduce costs through reducing product size and packaging. And the bonus is reduced impacts on the environment and waistline. It is all good.

The aunt is the sister of Obama's AWOL father. Only the nutters would claim close familial ties. Obama acknowledges his paternal family, but if you been following the campaign at all you might notice that they do not figure large in his life and warrant only brief mentions.

Anyway, why would in a free society anyone expect a political leader to know about and control every action a relative, friend, or acquaintance does? If a relative of mine started to demand I change my life in order to avoid embarrassing them politically, I would be apt to tell him/her to get stuffed. Obama has stated that the laws of the land need to be obeyed - that is all he can do and all he needs to do.

As for the whistle-blowers, they have made Obama's aunt a potential target for wackos. This now means that taxpayer money is being spent on safeguarding her and her neighbors.
