skipthesong, the only people calling Palin a pig are those from the GOP. Obama was clearly taking about policy and McCain. Further, the expression refers to trying to prettify something inherently ugly - Palin is not ugly, in fact I would argue that her physical beauty and smart mouth is one of McCain's biggest assets.

Psst, hey pro-war fanatics, I gotta a secret ... wars do not last forever. Now mismanagement can prolong wars (see Bush, George W.) but eventually they do wind down. Liberals may cheer, but so what.

As for the "crackpot" Iraqi leader - well he is an important US ally. He may be varnishing the truth, but it is a signal that Iraqis want a normal existence and that has to be good in terms of ending the war.

Lipstick can't hid ugly truths. Palin, in all truthfulness, not ugly - quite beautiful really.

This faux scandal is a sham and is more of the same from the GOP. Now that is a pig that can't hid behind lipstick.

Two weeks ago Palin was working for earmarks, now she is going cold turkey swearing off the stuff. I wish her well.

McCain has stayed away from earmarks for his state - that's good judgment - but why choose a running mate who is a chronic abuser of taxpayer funds? Not so sound judgment.

“You can’t just recreate yourself. You can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid.”

Well, maybe. But you can't ignore the fact that G. W. Bush was elected ... er ... voted in ... um ... in office for two terms. The democratic process is not always a beacon of brilliance.

Finally. And will Bush now start focusing on capturing bin Laden "dead or alive" or do large-scale crimes against humanity not warrant his attention until it is politically expedient?

WilliB indeed McCain made experience an issue which is something that cuts both ways. Having read stories both favourable and critical I tend to view Palin at this point as someone who has stirred the pot but only to distract away from her own dependency on earmarks and pork barrelling.

WilliB since when do earmarks and pork barrelling have anything with family. And why would any sane person (Dem or Repub.) not look carefully at the details of Palin's executive experience?

mar4eo And there are some who are afraid to look at the substance of Palin's much heralded executive experience. Washington basically funds Alaska - a situation not enjoyed by other states. Palin hired lobbyists to go after earmarks in Washington.

What change is she bringing to Washington again? Talk is talk (and she is quite good at it) but the walk is where you see the experience.

sailwind: yes, where as Mayor her city received 20 times the national average on earmarks (money she lobbied for in Washington), Alaska is 10 times the nation average. Gov. Palin supported the bridge to nowhere before she was against it and then kept that $223 million earmark. She is subject to a bipartisan investigation in alledged abuse of power.

So will she scale the porkbarrelling and abuses of power or will she find her road to Damascus and suddenly change?

Well sure. Some will vote for the white guy because he's white, black for the same reason. I have heard several times that Palin was the GOP answer to the Dems' Clinton - fine, except Palin's policies favour state-controlled uteruses, which many women (especially Clinton supporters) reject.

Palin does not have much to offer America. Controlling a $6 million budget and 56 employees is not the same as a national budget in the trillions and responsibilities for a country of over 300 million people - only the desperate would believe that her executive experience is relevant or scalable on a national level.

Check out the Daily Show where they compared McCain's '08 speech with Bush's speech in 2000. Almost the exact same speech when referring to change, education, bipartisanship, and on and on.

If McCain wants to show how different he is from Bush, why does he sound so much like Bush?

Does changing the deck chairs constitute change? For example, while McCain talks about being bipartisan, his minions from VP on down savage the Obama and the Dems. How is that change from Bush who also had "bipartisan" plank 8 years ago?

realteacher: Yeah it is the Olympics and they should be motivated to win, but they weren't. Same happened to the Canada and US Olympic hockey teams in Nagano - they did not jell and work together so they trashed the venue on their way out. It happens. Same for past US men's basketball teams.

If lack of motivation was the problem, then the Japanese bb team needs to address that problem. They were not blaming anyone else but themselves. You call that whining, I call it a needed post-mortem.

MPNiea: For all the griping by GOPers about cut backs in military spending I wonder why they were so silent back in the 90s. In fact everyone recognized the folly of spending Cold War billions after the USSR went bust. The focus back then was to spend money on infrastructure and social security.

As for the connection between 9-11 and the Clinton cuts, well no amount of military spending could prevent attacks when the POTUS BWBush ignored explicit warnings.

When Palin says that hockey moms are pit bulls with lip stick is she saying that she is a bitch that bites? Or is this a pander to dog owners?

"If you think Japan actually won the World Baseball Championships, guess again." So are you saying that if America does not win, then no one wins? Strange logic.

Japan played as a team at the WBC and were rewarded. They failed to motivate themselves at the Olympics and got what they deserved. I really do not hear excuses made rather a much needed post-mortem on why they lost.

I agree with CavemanLawyer about wanting a new cold war since that seems to be their comfort level. It is much more difficult to game the political and economic systems in a multipolar world. With the American economy on such shaky ground a bi-polar world may be seen as a means toward greater security.
