Thanks Cleo. Ghastly indeed. Appreciate you passing on the data. I will definitely take another look at this issue.

Aside from sensationalist advocacy groups, where else did you hear that seal hunters run "around on the ice swinging clubs, leaving cubs injured and bleeding while they chase after the ones that are trying to get away, and skinning them while still conscious just to save a bit of time."
All people who I know who kill animals for a living or are avid hunters and fishers do not have the attitude you say the seal hunters have. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt seal hunters are any less responsible than other hunters.
BTW I'm not a hunter or fisher. I am an eater, not a killer.

cloe: In high school I had friends whose fathers worked in an abattoir where they slaughtered cattle. The first thing they had to do was to put a slug in the heads of the cattle so that they could skin them. They do this to put food both on their tables as well as society's table.
If thinking about killing animals is too squimish for you, then avoid it. Why disrespect the dead because you cannot stomach their legal jobs? These men are dead. Respect that fact.

RomeoRamenII you are quite selective. There have been plenty on the right who have made similar claims. Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and others have damned America in one form or another over the years. AIDS and 9-11 have been described as God's punishment of America for its liberal policies. Rev. Wright followed a similar script by saying that America's human rights abuses (domestic and foreign) deserves God's wrath. Typical fire and brimstone sermons however in this case the angry right-wing white preachers but somehow an angry left-wing black preacher is beyond the pale.
Seems that Obama needs overcome a higher standard than white McCain. Clinton has other problems besides a higher standard because of gender. I'd place her much closer to McCain in terms of style (not ideology). And her creative story telling is an eerie echo of Bush's perpetual sunny skies view of everything he does. No thank you.

mareo2 defined fascism as “an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole.”
How then is fascism distinguishable from cultural features of a society? Which nation in North East Asia does not "consider the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole.” To varying degrees the whole is considered more important than the individual. One could used that definition to describe Japan as fascist, which I do not think is the case.
Confucism can also be described in terms of fascism.
The definition seems to favour a Eurocentric political bias based on philosophical, cultural and religious assumptions that are quite different in China, Japan, and the Koreas. Liddell's article is just picking at low hanging fruit - a lot of noise signifying little. In other words, using fascism as a pretext to criticize China may be self-satisfying, but does little to address the problems or find solutions.
Clearly China needs to find an equitable solution to its Tibet problems but the solutions will most likely come from within rather from foreign voices wishing China was more like America or Europe.

I second williamsmith. Mugabe not sleeping for 28 years is indeed impressive.

You say "anti-American" as if it was swearing against one's own mother. America is a state like all others, get over it already.
I don't think the Olympics should be boycotted, but neither do I think China should not be held to account, just like any other nation.

cleo: I can never understand you types who weep over animals and not over humans. These men had families to feed. They were not breaking any laws, just working to make ends meet. You may not like seal hunting - I do not particularly like it - but why show such disrespect for the dead?
Yes, the protests were successful in limiting the hunt which has been heavily monitored to make sure the hunters comply with the law.
sincity: Not only can I breath I know that "breathe" is a noun and not a verb.
Back in the late 1980s there were reports stating that cod were decimating the cod. Perhaps that was propaganda. I did check on google and found that it probably was. Here's the link http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/sealhunt/
Though it seems that propaganda and misinformation is on both sides.

The article defined fascism as "a system of state power that utilizes nationalism and big business to strengthen a country economically, industrially and militarily, especially when the country feels disadvantaged by the existing global system."
I thought that definition fits America much more than China. Just compare how much each have spent on military in the last 10 years. Not saying China should not be criticised, but America does fit the definition to a T.

I remember when the seal hunt protest was the whale hunt of its day. It was very successful. So successful in fact that the fast growing seal population helped in decimating the cod fisheries. Of course the longliners, trawlers, jiggers and the rest all did their part to wipe out the cod fishery. And just like those company fishing fleets, the bleeding heart celeb protesters never stopped to think through their actions. Can't really tell who is worse.
