And Den Den you still refuse to put substance to your assertions. How you were mis-educated is not relevant and so is your assumption that everyone else was too. I've known since high school that all sorts of people considered undesirable were murdered by the Nazis.

Now read Blackops' post. He provides some substance to his assertion, substance with which one can agree or disagree. I am not convinced since the Nazis were much better organized than the Khmer Rouge. Also, IBM assisted with the logistics with their computing machines. While I am not stuck on the number 6 million, I am more suspicious of those who vigourously oppose it not for the pursuit of truth but to push another narrative.

So** Den Den** how many Jews did die in the Holocaust? You make assertions based on facts only you know. I won't call you a "denier" but the B.S. meter is red zoning.

So Den Den and Bgood41, more bullets and boots and blood? All you both have are words, words, words and no ideas on how to change the current situation. As I said, President Obama's speech is a very good first step (i.e. talking to his audience as adults). Future action by many players will determine if the speech was effective - obviously some will always be unmoved..

Lofty and perhaps unrealistic, but what I liked about the speech is that he spoke directly to his main audience as adult to adult. If you want to change the conversation, then you have to change how you speak to the other. Talking down or completely ignoring people will not elicit any response towards change - President Obama has demonstrated the principle of equality by speaking to, not at, his audience. This mode of communication will stand in stark contrast to the extremists who invariably use coercion (rhetorical or otherwise) to bend the will of others.

Will this speech change anything? Hard to say, but if bullets and boots in Iraq can be a poster for promoting extremism, then a well crafted speech in Cairo by a believable supporter of freedom and democracy may also sway hearts and minds.

A very good first step, but that is all. The rest remains to be realized.

As a racist it seems she will make a good judge...

And the moral of the story here is never say a white man might be wrong.

I always thought respect was earned, not demanded!

Well that's a two-way street. After invading Iraq on false pretences (even Cheney has given up linking Iraq with 9-11), the humiliations at Abu Garaib, the US has little credibility with the Muslim world.

Anyway, it is a mute point since American foreign policy is not in the respect earning business.

It's safe to say Obama and his Chief of Homeland Security don't trust Canadians or Mexicans.

It is safer to say that you and the rest did not read the article. The story is about Americans going into Canada or Mexico.

*The U.S. State Department said there has been no spike in passport applications because of the June 1 deadline. The increase came in 2007 when it became required to show a passport for air travel to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. That year a backlog of applications accumulated, affecting travelers nationwide.

The number of U.S. passport card applications, however, has increased as June 1 approaches, said Brenda Sprague, head of the passport division of the department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs.*

The world must be laughing at us for electing such a spineless bunch.

No. We laughed at the former administration as we observed a bunch of chicken hawks botch two wars, the economy, New Orleans ... actually we stopped laughing years ago.

Obama may end up being mediocre but he is still miles ahead of Bush.

And stop calling yourself a patriot if all you do is support your party and not your country.

We all win, huh? Who is we? "We" does not include the workers who live in squalid conditions for low pay so the consumer can buy cheap goods. Nor does it include the agricultural workers who get sick because of pesticides and other chemicals (often passing them on to their children) so food can be bought cheaply. And then there are all those other externalities such as ground water poisoning, air pollution, soil erosion and on and on.

Capitalism still has a long way to go before it can be considered a winning way for everyone.

That must be why he congratulated Barack Obama and Joe Biden on their victory.

Yeah, he did it sitting down with a faux sore back. He just did not have the spine to stand up and accept the GOP defeat like a man (a reprise of his Vietnam days?), particularly to a black man.

Why would the Democrat-controlled Semate vote to deny Obama's request for $80 million to close Gitmo?

Sarge pay attention. The question of where to put the prisoners has not been resolved, so they said no. That's what happens in a democracy... you should read up on it.

A fact checking story on Yahoo had a long list of factual errors in Cheney's speech.

Also, David Brooks of the NYT has an interesting take which puts Bush in a more positive light and Cheney about right where he is now.

“Seven-and-a-half years without a repeat is not a record to be rebuked and scorned,” Cheney said.

But those first 6 months do deserve rebuke and scorn. It is a wonder that Bush-Cheney did not take a political fall for 9-11. And not owning up to his failure to protect America only adds scorn and ridicule to his words now.
