Hindsight is 20/20 and Iraq certainly hasn't played out well. But the use of torture can never be condoned for any reason. If you are going to circumvent the human and / or constitutional rights of one person because this will (insert convenient excuse or rational to make the person an untermensch) then any of us can have our rights violated for some other reason.
Bush is completly wrong on this point and gitmo should have been closed a year ago. Now the shame is Obama's. So much for change you can believe in.

I don't know how you make a punishment difficult enough that this type of sicko become an example and a deterrent to others. Perhaps the stocks and public floggings for some of the more henious crimes would be better in the long run. Might seem barbaric but what he proposed to do with this poor girl is even more so.
I'm glad the girl got away. Too bad she was hurt at all.

Sumo indeed. 30 years ago I might have tried but I'm not sure I could have finished it. Now it just looks mildly nauseating.

More political grandstanding. Even if the court ruled against Japan they could just drop out of the treaty any time they cared to. I doubt it would be worth it though. On the other hand since a compromise was put forward and then rejected I'm not sure that the Aussies will win.

We're being deceived by Obama? Over NK? That would be strange.
Everybody else is saying that NK did it. I don't think there's much room for discussion. Plus the "Economist" is saying that the torpedo has NK markings. Guess you pick whom you care to believe.
In the meantime if the SK navy would "accidentally" land a shell on the dear little pipsqueak's head it would save everybody a lot of bother.

I can't picture lil Kim as a patsy of Israel. Lap dog of China, yeah. Lunatic with nukes, yep. But I can't see Israel having anything to do with this unless they are interested in cutting off nuclear proliferation at the source.
Maybe I've just answered my own question? But even so, it's a very risky ploy. The idea that NK is just getting even for the last skirmish is simpler.
Let's just hope nothing escalates.

take out lil Kim with a wayward missile and then deny, deny, deny? Sounds good. But maybe just "oops!" is good enough?

The dollar already float on the global market so devaluation could be automatic. But China needs the US dollar. China also keeps lil Kim around because they find him grotesquely useful, somehow. I doubt they are going to be responsible about NK. Sort of like letting your dog crap all over the neighborhood.

I expect that all the NK expats running pachinko parlors have received a call from the dear little pipsqueak saying "go to the JT website and vote that the US sank that SK ship or your mum gets it." Thus the large number of votes for the US as the culprit.

The evidence isn't all that sketchy, check out BBC or CNN for a better review. Why would NK do it? Dunno. Maybe China put him up to it? He is China's lap dog, after all.

@tigris I didn't say Thaksin wasn't corrupt, that goes for most politicians. But unless he had made a move to thwart the constitution, such as not submitting to arrest for crimes duly processed in the court, then the army had no business moving in. Even if Thaksin was arrested (or ran away, in this case) there should be a line of succession in place that doesn't involve the army.
Thaksin may just be a Thai version of Chavez, but is moving the army in the best policy?

What is notable here is that, with the exception of Johnstown, PA, the status quo is being upset. Doesn't matter if they are democrats or republicans, the incumbents are in trouble. Going to be interesting to watch.

We shouldn't forget that the present government ousted the duly elected government with a coup back a few years ago. The "red shirts" are now giving the "yellow shirts" back what they were given. You shall reap as you sow, and all that. Kein merheit fur die mitleid.

It keeps getting worse and worse. When is it going to get better? About the only thing that has been proven is that you can't trust any politician. Maybe we should just move the government to Afghanistan and see how well they do.
