I guess I don't see any more purpose to Palin being in Haiti then when what's-his-name flew in with his scientoloty buddies. Maybe she's trying to show she's presidential material? Perish the thought! Anybody who bails out of their term as governor should be considered unfit for higher office. IMHO, of course. Even if I agreed with all of her policies her behaviour disqualifies her.

The snow just got here. Reports are for perhaps a meter in heavy lake effect storms. Tokyo in the winter is looking better all the time...have to get out the cross country skis.

If you looked at the wikileaks cables it would appear that China's control of NK is more limited than we like to think. When you think about it, that's not a surprise. How do you control a meglomaniac like the dear little leader? I'm not sure it can be done any more effectively than Chamberlin "controlled" Hitler.

So the hackers think that, because they feel the two women should not have filed charges, they should attack the women's lawyer. Seems to me the hackers are saying "since we don't agree with you we will attack your right to legal counsel." I wonder what they would think if there was a DoS attack on Assange's British lawyer's website? Would that be OK? I doubt it. Amazing how two-faced this whole thing is. The very people who claim that everything should be public hide and attack other's rights. Hypocrites.

Somebody ought to be billed for everybody's time. I'm not sure who but that's a big problem for such a silly thing.

Yeah, he is. If Iran is willing to behave this unreasonably (and continue to engage in a lot of activities considered uncivilized, like rigging elections and killing protesters) then the notion of Iran having a nuclear weapon is a frightening one. Slip the thing into a cargo container, ship it to Sidney (or NY) and detonate the thing and it becomes very difficult to figure out where the bomb came from. From past actions by Iran and declarations from Iran's leaders such an incident is believable.

True, if you want to be highly specific. But the site is "wikiLEAKSs" so I think Assange is going to be hoisted by his own petard.
I agree with LostinNagoya, the logical conclusion of all this is that any data the government has, or that is sent to him, including ID numbers, etc. could be considered fair game for publication.
Sure, somebody can probably get my license number, phone number, etc. if they troll hard enough, but why make it easy for them. Same applies to unguarded border points, etc.
I note that Assage isn't publishing his address at the moment....do you think he'd be upset if somebody posted it? How about the IP addys of all the mirror servers?
That's the problem with transparency - people who live in glass houses, and all that.

That's a good point for a lot of the posts. If there is proof that Berlosconi accepted kickbacks, impeach him. If the president of Sri Lanka ordered the massacre of civilians impeach him and send him to the Hague for war crimes. On the other hand, discussion of what to do if NK collapses and what China thinks of the dear little leader does nothing but stir up trouble. If the dear brat decides to move to protect his selfish interests there will be a mess.
I think that's the difference between what should be leaked and what shouldn't. In some cases Assange should have posted the stuff. In others he is just being irresponsible.
For example, if a friend confided in you that so-and-so's dress was hideous, would you tattle? Good way to complicate a friendship. But if you were told that so-and-so robbed a bank yesterday do you call the cops? In the latter case I think you would be justified. In the former you are just a rotten "friend."
Assange should consider the importance of the "crime" versus the possible reactions to secret conversations being published. He hasn't, so a lot of people are justifibly (and not so justifiably) upset.

If China really has little influence in NK then Tokyo and SK are pretty much in the gunsites of a paranoid dictator who seems to be willing to stop at nothing to get his way.
Perhaps China ought to gain some influence by invading NK and stabilizing the place while everybody picks up the pieces. Bet they don't have the brass to do it though.

Every country tries to exert influence. Japan and China tend to use aid and business deals. Of course China likes to throw it's weight around the Spratley Islands and the like. NK lobs whatever explosives they find interesting. Everybody in the EU does it. So I'm not surprised that the US does. The US also has one of the more open democracies and a pretty good standard of living. After bailing Europe out on two occaisions, etc., it might not be a surprise that some US citizens are smug. There is always going to be evil done under the guise of "national interests," banana republics and the like. This kind of thing should be stopped. But just publishing a lot of embarrassing emails and such; what good is that except to poke a stick in a hornets nest? Everybody knows Kenya is corrupt, most of Africa is. The real damage might be if NK gets more paranoid (is that possible?) and does something stupid. But that's another story.
Suffice to say Assange has had his 15 minutes, has proven he's presidential material (pity he can't run against Hillary in the primary); at least on par with the last two. The only open question is, "did Assange fall for a "honey trap" or is he truly a rapist?" Sort of like Bill Clinton then: close, but no cigar.
Does that make him as smart as the last three presidents?

I don't know about Japan, but a lot of the homeless in the US have mental issues or addictions and aren't necessarily interested in a shelter because of the issues it presents to them. The people who were homeless due to economic circumstances would probably accept help but I expect they would rather have a job instead of or in addition too, given what you get paid for menial labor....there are people who work and still can't afford the price of housing.

I suppose leaking the diplomatic cables of, for example, Denmark would be a lot less interesting to the world? I wouldn't want to be the person responsible for the leak. As far as Assange is concerned I'm sure he'll bask in his so called "glory" while he ignores the repercussions of his actions. I'll bet that the leaks about NK will drive the dear little leader to his own irresponsible actions. Nice to be irresponsible when the shells are dropping on some other country. Maybe Assange wants to be president of the US? He's got the qualifications as set by the last two....

Tough to say who did it at this point but the wikileaks postings do muddy the water. There are a lot of people around who don't want Iran to have nukes and lots of those have the money to set up an assasination. Might have been Mossad, might have been the CIA. But the Russians and Saudis would be in line too. Shame it comes to assasination of scientists though. Are they considered combatants? In any case, if this was done by a foreign country it's about as close to an act of war as you can get before you send the aircraft bombers in. I can just imagine the hullabaloo if this happened to somebody in Europe or the USA. Somebody is going too far.

All people have thin lips when they smile. I'm not sure thin lips are a sign of beauty anyway. I think western culture prefers "pouting" lips. As far as the tiara goes, even if I could afford it where would one wear it?

W lost me completely when he endorsed stipping people of their civil rights and resorting to torture. I am firmly of the opinion that if one person can lose their rights by being defined as "untermensch" or, "enemy combatant", then we can all lose our rights any time those in power decide we are the untermensch.
No book that Bush writes will ever remove that stigma from his presidency. IMHO, of course.

I have to agree that the people of Burma are being ill treated by the junta. Of couse as said junta has taken lessons from NK and China I don't expect much better. The more China continues to support ugly regimes like Mugabe, lil Kim and the Burmese junta the more respect I lose for them. So glad I don't work in China any longer. I'd probably be arrested for typing this!

Wow, knowing what it costs to keep a sailboat in Japan (I can't afford it) I don't want to know what it costs to stable a horse! Nice pic, hope the horse and the rider are having some fun.
