I'm seeing a lot of platitudes but not much substance in the debate - typical JT fare then. Oh well, carry on.

The TP might be a subset of the GOP just as the "religious right" was but to say that the TP represents the whole GOP isn't any more true than saying that NOW or Greenpeace or Soros represent the Dems. What happens is that the Gerrymandering of districts makes many "safe" districts for the dems or the gop. That means that the primary to be on the ballot for either party ends up being the "election." Since primaries draw very few of the voters from the party of the "safe" district any highly motivated group can push their candidate to victory in the primary. This is what happened with Paladino, the TP favorite who ended up being the GOP candidate for governor of NY and, subsequently, pretty much ripped to shreds as his faults were brought to light. Thus the GOP scrambles to find somebody who can beat Palin before the next presidential race looks like the NY governor's race.....I still can't understand why anybody would think Palin is presidential material. But that's a different topic.

That's right, middle america isn't recovering. All those manufacturing jobs went to China or were automated. The only people who's jobs aren't outsourced are either too labor critical (like janitors and housekeeping) and can't be automated or require real time highly adaptable skills. Even the latter can be outsourced to India; eventaully. So with middle amreica not recovering both the Economist and CNN are predicting that it's open season on incumbents in general and the current majority holders, who promised way too much to be able to deliver. Not that the other guys won't make a hash of things, but if there is one thing you can accuratly say about the majority of Americans is that they're not happy campers any more.

You have to wonder how much of a carbon footprint this event had as all the delegates fly in from all over to talk about an issue and come up with an agreement that's not enforcable. As long as the population is expanding nothing is going to change. There might be opportunity to use land more efficiently to slow the expansion but even that won't be enough in the long run.

There is some McD's food I like but I choose what I eat and when I eat it. Blaming somebody eise is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's not like he was a goose being fattened for pate, after all. Sheesh!

I think that this demonstration is aimed at NK and a chance to test the system at the same time. There isn't a weapon system available that would stop a Chinese attack and I doubt the Chinese are dumb enough to provoke the response. The dear little pipsqueak, on the other hand, does not have the capabilities of the Chinese but might do something insane. This system could stop that before it turned Tokyo into a wasteland. Well worth the effort.

Sarge, on those low-lying small islands I doubt there is much high ground. Plus the people want to be close to their boats.
I hope more survivors are found but tsunamis are particularly deadly if you can't get away from it completely.

Unfortunately there are a lot of issues where Obama could have made a difference - gitmo, don't ask don't tell, etc. where his supporters see him as not delivering. So a lot of them might stay home. As far as taxes are concerned I don't have much faith in either party. The only "change" is whom gets the money they take from the public; it seems. But as they say, it's not over until the fat lady sings. Now, is the fat lady Hillary or Palin? Time will tell.

Ah yes, the religion of peace blowing each other to pieces. Sort of reminds you of the Spanish inquesition, or N Ireland. It's usually a control thing disguised as a religious issue. For example, the Sunni minority used to run the show in Iraq. Now the Shia are in control, sort of. It would seem that when the radicals can't find infidels to blow up they are more than happy to blow up any Muslim whom they disagree with. Nice.

For some reason I doubt that most Japanese 20 somethings are going to need training in wearing a hooters outfit. With all the cosplay over here the girls are well versed in this type of stuff.

I can't believe they are still going on about this. Maybe semperfi is right; perhaps the Chinese are venting out of frustration with their own government in a "safe" forum? Just seems strange to be protesting something when the Japanese gov't. caved in and let the guy go.
With the "unofficial" slowdown in deliveries of materials to Japanese companies other countries and businesses see an opportunity. This could backfire badly for China.

The fact that the worst of the hypocrites like Whitman and Palladino are going to loose might be an indicator that the US hasn't lost it's collective mind. But the anti-incumbent groundswell is amazing and it will affect both the Dems who promised a miracle and failed to deliver and the Reps who have been in office for ages but haven't done anything to fix the mess. Obama's inability to deliver on his campaign promises hasn't helped and will probably keep a lot of the disillusioned left from getting out to vote. The result will be that the less rabid tea partiers have a chance of upsetting incumbents. Heck, it's open season on incumbents! But, in two years time, once the new crowd has proved unable to implement their promises there will be another shift. Sort of like the old "Who" song: "meet the new boss, same as the old boss..."

There is a possibility that noborito is right. If the US housing prices continue to decline then consumer spending will remain weak as people try to reduce debt. Might just dip back into recession again. Hopefully not....

I'll agree that the body scanners will cut down on profiling and speed up checkpoints. Now if they start putting the baggage handlers through the same screening and background checks and secure the other airport areas I'd feel safer.

Why go through with it? Because there are sycophants in Burma (useful idiots, Stalin called them) who need the sham to "prove" to themselves that what they are doing is "right" and that the opposition deserves the abuse they hand out.
Burma is rapidly becoming another NK and you only have to look as far as China to see why this regime can survive.

SuperLib, I agree that it's rather amazing to find out that Ahmadinejad's type still exist, but as long as there are humans there will be meglomaniacs. Said people have a completely distorted world view and an ego sized to match. The whole visit is designed to showcase his point of view. Sort of like when Bush went on that aircraft carrier to say "mission accomplished."
The more trouble Ahmadinejad causes the happier he is.

Yeah, there's a big difference between China and Chile. I'm sure the miners are happy about that. I'd bet that in China they would have been written off as dead and left there.
I can't imagine being stuck down there for so long. Those guys have done well for themselves and I hope they get a chance to relax and enjoy some time to unwind.
