Yeah, the masses riot, the Korean elite quietly send all their money and children out of the country, and the problem is that Japan isn't sufficiently sorry about what happened 60-70 years ago. And I say that as a Korean-American. Roh Moo Hyun promises to not cowtow to America and redistribute wealth and power from Seoul to other parts of the country. The citizenry elect him, he tries to do these things, and they riot. Lee Myung Bak has a long history of being cozy with the US and Japan and being a little sleazy and he promises economic growth at all cost. The citizenry elect him and when it turns out he is a little sleazy and cozy with the US and Japan, they riot. Maybe they just want to run amok because I certainly see little rhyme or reason to this behavior.

Pathat, just why will Obama be saddled with overwhelming economic problems from the get-go? I'm sorry, was the Green Party responsible for that? So if your party digs a big enough hole such that nobody can get the country out of it, that is the reason you should always hold power? That's not a very healthy democracy. By that logic, Kim Jong Il and his family should always rule North Korea since nobody's going to be able to do anything about that mess anyway.

As arguments go, "well, sure we f'd it up good but the other guy will be just as bad" isn't really strong, which is why even a lot of Republicans quietly think it's probably best to see if the Dems can run the show for a bit while they restrategize and regroup.

I think in any case it will be really tough for McCain to win when he himself repeatedly stresses that Americans need a change more than anything else. His conclusion -- that he is clearly the more obvious and compelling agent of change -- is not nearly as intuitive as he seems to think it is.

Republicans who criticize Obama for not having the idea to back up his rhetoric, I do have to ask, how can that be worse than having and implementing a lot of really bad ideas? Harriet Miers, Supreme Court Justice? Really?

What does Jon Stewart call him on the Daily Show, "Still-President Bush"? I guess Japan Today's next big breaking story will be "Consumers wish gas prices were lower."

If I accuse the poser of the question of being ignorant, am I a "racist?"

"Gaijin" refers to non-Japanese in general, which last time I checked wasn't a racial category. "Racism" is not a catch-all term for prejudice, discrimination, preferences, etc. It's because people throw around loaded words without understanding them even basically that we don't make more social progress than we do.

Anyway, it's a discriminatory word and it's a discriminatory country. No crap. You can like it or lump it as to both but these are just facts.

To Japanese people or media suicide generally doesn't have a religion sin component to it, so to them it's like any other unfortunate death, like a car accident or whatever. I wouldn't say they glorify people who commit suicide here. But there are some pretty complex mental health issues here, that's for sure, what with suicide, ijime, shut-in's, etc. Of course, eating until you weigh 400 pounds and then suing McDonald's would be considered equally crazy here I suppose.

"Six Japanese were arrested too, what a bunch of hypocrites Japanese people are!"

And the ratio of Japanese to foreigners is what in this country?

I think Yukie Nakama is a pretty good actress and attractive to boot, but such actresses are rare. I don't care if what the Japanese want is just eye candy and lots of it - hey, it's their country - but it is funny when a Japanese person asks me quite seriously why it is that popular young Japanese actresses don't seem to draw interest from in Hollywood. Uhh . . . because they can't speak English, don't draw flies outside their home country, can't do action OR act? Are those some reasons?
