More train lines need the safety barriers installed which only open once the train has stopped. Similar to the Maranouchi line, the yellow line is then made irrelevant (apart for blind who use it as guide). Since this was installed about 2 years ago there have been no delays due to “jinshin jiko” on this line. I’m sure its not cheap, but definitely worth it. It’s the only line I use where I don’t actually face everyone "behind" me as the train approaches. Its common sense, even prior to these incidents and prior to coming to Japan, trust no one and live.

No surprises here...Roppongi has always been a dump. I would love to see the foreign community completely snub Roppongi, then all the Nigerians can go home and work on their 419 mail scams instead. A couple of friends had this happened to them though it was in Shinjuku a few years back, Nigerians again. Luckily they did not produce their credit cards but did lose a few 10,000YEN notes. The drug is very strong.. they did not enjoy it one bit.

While I agree that smokers should smoke themselves to death (and quickly!) his comment is flawed. An increase in non-smoking will decrease medical costs for the elderly.

Pacemaker concern is a joke. If mobile phones really effected pacemakers people would be croaking left right and centre.

1- tone beeps everytime a key is pressed. (usually oldtimers)

2- shaking the phone in order to get reception when denpa is bad. (usually young girls/women)

Betting: Japanese seem to have a penchant for running away from accidents they cause. I think it was Goro from Smap did it, a couple of baseball players have done it as well as numerous citizens.

Probably because even if it's not your fault as the driver you're very likely to be charged. Of course this is no excuse for running away from an incident with which you could try and help the person who you've just hit.... panic is probably the biggest contributor.

Ah the good old "Sai-tei" line. Still the number 1 groping line I see. Looking back I don't know how I put up with that hell ride for 4 years... I remember a few incidents where as the train would be pulling away from the station after an unusually long wait, You'd then see a station attendant and good citizen on the platform holding a pervert by the arms while a girl behind is bawling her eyes out. Once it was a 20 Year old in a full kimono celebrating "coming of age" - yeah welcome to adulthood. That was sad.

Multitasker - never heard about it being called "Murder line" but it makes good sense. I did loose it once and shoved a guy for repeatedly using my back as a newspaper stand. I'm not a violent guy and it took a while holding it in and trying to be patient...the guy beside me had warned him too as he was getting his fair share or newspaper to the back of the head. I think the woman in this case probably felt the same...though I don't know how you could be patient with guys touching you. Patients and fear I guess.

Interesting... I never really though that this could be a point of difficulty. I applied for my first card from Citi back here in 2000, was 26 and under 7M per year. Its the only card I've ever needed, not used much and always paid in full the following month with zero interest paid. I have added 2 cards to my collection... again rarely used but sometimes handy when used within the store for further discounts.... Department store ISETAN (VISA) card and a Cubic T3 (VISA) created via Toyota Rent a car, just send the application form via the mail and 2 weeks later card is in the mail. It's a sinch bar the ugly form you need to fill out. As for needing an Alien registration... if you don't have any other forms of Japanese ID then yes of course, but I only ever use my Japanese drivers license whenever ID is required and this is never an issue. I don't think the "gaijin" factor is really at play here...

The media coverage is overkill for such a trivial topic. To be one of the top stories on the evening news is a joke. Why is it so shocking? I don't understand. Its illegal.... fine so book them and get on with life. The media publicity is not only overdone but usually bias by focusing on the "foreign" source of the drug.

Nippon5... Thats a start... that would mean the PC will be unusable until she logs in for him.. once its on though it can stay on until turned off.... so she then needs to create a non adminstrator account for him with minimum rights. She can login as admin install some automation software to automatically turn off the PC at designated times. Another option is a good ADSL router which only allows internet access at a certain time range.

Its probably a notebook too... so when you're stumbling around in the dark after cutting the power the only thing working would be that blasted PC.

    Cleo-

No, definitely not any sicker. Murdering any innocent by-stander is pure evil no matter what the method. My point is that in Japan many suicides affect innocent by-standers by accident and are a bi-product of the suicidee's chosen method. However in some cases the only reason for the killing is to then turn themselves straight into the koban to be processed with the hope of receiving the death penalty. The links you provide are not so, the difference is that these people wanted to take out a few people before they go. This often not the case here, the killing is a means to an end.

So in direct response to this poll: 1. People determined 100% to commit suicide need a clean method to end their lives with zero impact on others. 2. There needs to be a stronger deterrent aimed at people who commit mass stabbing or any other murder spree.... hanging is not a deterrent for this group.

    Cleo-

I'm not comparing Japan's suicide rate to that of other nations I'm sure as you point out that Japan is not the leader here... the point is that many suicides in Japan directly affect innocent bystanders with the methods used in each suicide... whether it be jumping in front of a train, Jumping off a building (young girl jumped of the Parco building in Ikebukuro 3 months ago killing the man she landed on) gassing themselves or mass killing to receive a death sentence.

Already too late for too many in this society, this is why over 33,000 people commit suicide each year in this country. Their exit methods are the problem and its affecting the innocent.

One major reason for crimes against innocent bystanders and not just with knives is "I want to get the death penalty". This happened with the stabbing spree about 3 months ago at a station where 7 people were knifed. The following week a teenager killed a random salaryman who just finished a long day at work by pushing him off the platform and onto an oncoming train for the same reason. Over thirty self gassing incidents this year alone caused major problems with hundreds of innocent bystanders in surrounding areas suffering from toxic poisoning. Then there are the daily railway related suicides which affect thousands of commuters.

Wanting to die is an unfortunate fact in Japanese society.

Its a sad state, but government aided suicide is needed for those hell bent on ending their life.

There should also be a new classification for random attacks on multiple victims, hanging after a drawn out 10 year trial is a joke. Something similar to Saudi Arabia "chop-chop square" comes to mind, this should act as a deterrent. This form or other slower more painful forms of punishment should help stop the current execution method being the actual motivation for committing the crime.

I can only feel for the friends and families, who lose loved ones from these inhumane and senseless attacks. The perpetrators need to loose all human rights and be disposed of quickly.

Unfortunately buying/possession of kiddy porn is not illegal in this country so its most likely a copyright infringement or mosaic issue.

Absolute garbage. Where to start..... firstly everything is based around "Geinoujin" or TV personalities. The geinoujins opinion on everything or anything seems like its must be gospel... whether it be eating something - which is always "OISHIIIIII" - I mean who cares!!! If for any reason the program has to show a non geinoujin piece of footage the viewer is reassured that the geinoujin is still there by displaying their face in a small subscreen... this allows the viewer to view the geinoujins facial expressions... as the Japanese viewers need reassurance that the geinoujin is also enjoying this fantastic footage...

Then there are the one hit wonder geinoujins who come up with such fantastic phrases as follows: Nande daro- Nande daro, chotto chotto chotto, sonna no kannkei nai, GUUU, this catapults them to stardom and they continue doing these jokes... over and over again. The stand up comedy routines are also pathetic.... always the same, 2 guys up on stage - one guy is the fool the other is constantly dissing him "bla bla bla OMAE! bla bla bla OMAE! As the sense of humor in Japan is less about words more about action, better suited to small children.

And with the exception of NHK's airing of BBC's Planet Earth series, almost all documentaries have to be broken up into pieces with the geinoujin providing either commentary or turning the documentary into a QUIZ. I mean, who gives a toss if the geinoujin can guess whats going to happen next in a scene.

    Sorry for the rant...
