Because, believe it or not, kids misbehave and do stupid things and can be obnoxious. If your response is "kids should be in an environment where they can't be obnoxious or misbehave" then I'll give up at this point.
Like I have emphaises and believe, only for extreme cases. I'm talking about the rare smack here, not pounding some infant in the head with a baseball bat.

Wrong. There is a difference between hitting, and short, sharp (but not hard) smack to the wrist. If your 5 year old child reaches throws tennis balls at a boiling hot saucepan on a kitchen stove, what are you going to do? Have a quick reason with them over milk, cookies and a cuddle?
