    First we have people asking why didn't Bob Barker help instead of chasing the research fleet now we have Ossan hinting there was something 'interesting' about the Bob Barker's response. Make your minds up, people.

    So the Bob Barker got there first, checked that things were OK, took on board some stuff presumably to lift the Bardot higher in the water, and when it was sure the ship would be OK until the SI arrived, got on with its job. Not comparable with certain other vessels that did not bother answering the distress call or offering assistance in any form. Though as it's been said, SS would have to be in truly dire straits to accept help from the whalers.

    I agree with Foxie, the dog bit is good (as always), the Smap bit is superfluous.

    Sorry Daijoboots, but what do you call it? I really do not see what the problem is here. I think that the fact that Softbank continues to make White Family commercials, and that they continue to be popular, is pretty clear evidence that the vast majority of people do not find them insulting. Large companies tend to avoid insulting like the plague, it's bad for business.

    I've suggested more day cares and better opportunities for working women Cleo. How is that not supporting?!

    No support for families who choose to care for their own kids. Your 'better opportunities' are only opportunities for women to work like men. What society as a whole needs is more scope for men to be able to work like women and for both parents to spend more, not less, time with their kids.

    Ebuda, the chihuahua had a hit pushing credit cards, and has since retired. Never had a speaking part, but with liquid eyes that sold a million pet-shop puppies.

    ubiwit, I don't understand your post. What kind of 'attack' do you think the White Family is? What does Mr. Son's family background or name have to do with anything? What 'law' did he get around? (There is no law specifying what name a Japanese citizen should have). I love Japan and I don't think I'm a cretin, but if I ever took Japanese nationality I would certainly want to retain the name my parents gave me, there's nothing anti-Japanese in that.

    I certainly don't believe there will be anything left when it comes time from me to take what I paid. Why?! No younger generation to ensure the payments are there.

    But you don't want kids, and you don't want the system made easier for people to have kids....

    those smart enough have money socked away

    Those who have been on an average income (which is most people, that's what average means) and have put a couple of kids through the education system here don't have much socked away. They were told they didn't need to, because they were paying their premiums. And they've contributed a couple of tax-payers to the economy to keep things moving.

    These women will then be sahm for a few years.....If the women in this country want better working conditions they need to step up and prove they are serious.

    I would have thought 'better working conditions' included the ability to take a reasonable amount of time (1-3 years) off to raise a family. Demanding every mother be back on the assembly line/in the office before the umbilical cord has had time to dry is NOT a serious way of improving conditions for all. While I agree with you that the 130-man cap on married women's income needs to go if women (heck, all taxpayers) are to get a fair deal, for young, childless women to demand that the elderly and mothers should get to the back of the bus strikes me as being very selfish.

    Some didn't, and I agree with you that they should not be entitled to the same pension as people who have paid in. People who have paid in should get what they paid for, regardless of gender. Kikukawa from Olympus is one man, not representative of the majority who have done their bit. (I know Kikugawa was involved in dodgy business dealings, but is there any suggestion anywhere that he didn't pay the personal pension premiums he was supposed to pay? If there is no such suggestion, why bring him up?)

    In your post you refer to 'old people who don't contribute much anymore', which presumably means you do acknowledge that they have made their contribution. The majority of ordinary people who are now hitting pension age have not 'robbed the country blind'.

    Isn't the "White" family insulting to blacks?

    The dog is white, is all. An interracial, interspecies group all working together as one happy family - very symbolic, and not in the least insulting to anyone.

    not even SSCS is making any claims about the Japanese research whalers not responding.

    That's not what the West Australian is reporting.

    None of the vessels in the Japanese whaling fleet had responded to the calls for help.

    Capt. Watson said he did not trust the Japanese fleet to help and feared if they came to the aid of the Brigitte Bardot they would “run it down”.

    It's good the SI was the nearest and able to respond, but other ships in the area don't know that unless they at least answer the distress call to find out what the situation is. Judging from the attitudes of some posters here (sharks? in the Antarctic?), Watson has a point.

    Why to look after all the old people who don't contribute much anymore.

    Yes, no reason at all to give any support to the people who have spent their lives paying into the system - blood, sweat and tears as well as taxes and pension premiums. Bring back obasuteyama.

    Not a Christian or a big fan of the Bible, but it does have some gems in it - like, Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long
