I second Disillusioned's endorsement of the Green book. Thirty years on, I don't think what he has to say has gone out of date - very down to earth, with a touch of humour, if i remember rightly. I found it a great help.

    >You will be disqualified from keeping animals for a period of 10 years.

It wasn't her kitten, so banning her from keeping animals is a bit off the mark. Nasty little piece of work. I hope she gets some much-needed psychiatric help during those 168 days.

Ask yourself this question. Why is Japan doing scientific research?

Because it's not allowed to do commercial whaling out in the open.

because then they know how many they can hunt in order to eat the meat

They're supposedly not allowed to hunt any in order to eat the meat.

Isn't your "whaling is inhumane" argument good enough?

Yes, it is. Trumps all other arguments.

It's interesting to see you desperately trying to defend those other, irrelevant, arguments, though.

They aren't sampling them in numbers that would threaten the health of the stocks. The 850 minke quota compares with estimated abundance of some hundreds of thousands

They're supposedly 'sampling' them to determine the health of the stocks, so that's a totally round-about argument.

Where is their commitment to the whaling convention?

Same place as Japan's commitment to true scientific study. Nowhere.

So your statement of they take fine whaleS is wrong. They took A fin whale in 2009.

Not for want of trying. They wanted to take 50. SS stopped them killing the other 49.

why the Netherlands joined this statement? What's the connection?

Japan has tried to apply pressure to the Netherlands to strike the Steve Irwin from its register, and apparently the Dutch, quite rightly, don't take kindly to being told which ships can or cannot be registered with them.

I'm disappointed that the UK hasn't expressed its disappointment, but not really surprised. The Tories were never very good on animal welfare.

Frungy - I agree it may not be the solution in all cases, but in this particular case it worked wonderfully.

The daughter of a friend of mine was bullied in elementary school. After speaking to the teacher and not very much being done, the mother had a word with the ringleader of the bullies. She didn't rant and rave or threaten him or give him what for; instead she took him into her confidence, told him that her daughter wasn't happy because some kids in the class were mean to her and that, as he was a good kid and popular and the other kids would follow his lead, she trusted him to keep an eye on the girl and see that she was OK. She didn't mention that she knew he was the ringleader. The lad, who'd thought the bullying was really just a bit of a lark, and was very chuffed at being picked out to be trusted, became the girl's 'guardian' and stopped the other kids picking on the girl.

Sometimes you need to use headology.

Bullies lack self-esteem. Giving them a bit can make a huge difference. Smacking them in the face simply teaches them that violence is a valid answer to a problem.

Seeing that all kids have self-esteem in the first place would prevent a lot of mindless bullying.

Eat plenty of mince pies, stollen and chocolates so that there is no room for the alcohol and it just flows right through before it has time to make you drunk..

According to the vernacular press the father said he wanted to tell the class what it feels like to be bullied. He asked several kids what they had said to his daughter (so it sounds like it was verbal, not physical bullying), and the boy replied おぼえていない(I don't remember).

It's easy to understand why the father was upset, but there's no excuse for punching a child in the face.

life has been given to 40 pigs that would've been killed - everyone should be happy about this

No, it hasn't - the article says they were rounded up, presumably to continue their journey to the slaughter-house. The meat-eaters are happy that they still get to have their bacon and sausages and even make jokes about it.

Poor pigs. Not just the ones in this accident.

The pigs that escaped .... didn't escape. Poor pigs.

There'd be no rice in the paddy at this time of year, so it's not like they were able to sell themselves dear by trampling/eating a few crops.

The head at least is obviously not a panda, the snout is too long and the neck is just not right. Pretty gruesome object, like all taxidermy victims.

    Duh. Yeah.

Why would anyone not want their child to experience the magic of Christmas? Or those few weeks in the run-up when the kid is trying extra hard to be good?

One Christmas we spent in England when the kids were little, my Dad arranged for a mate to come over dressed as Santa. The look on the kids' faces was priceless, and when they got back to Japan they told all their friends they'd met the Real Santa and his Mummy (=Dad's mate's missis, who came with him).

It's good being able to choose what crust you want, what toppings you want, etc. But what makes a good pizza great is sharing it (and a bottle of wine) with family.

Yes, if someone was on the swing you had to wait your turn. But if a kid insisted on hogging the swing the teacher would tell him to let someone else have a go.

The 50% of males who smoke, I believe, learn the habit on college campuses.

I think you're right. My son recently had a get-together with friends he hadn't seen since high school and was appalled at how many of them had taken up smoking since then. How can so many otherwise intelligent people be so stupid?
