I will have you know that I am the Master in my house, that's right, the big cheese, the head honcho, King of the castle and all that other stuff.

Yes yes sailwind, of course you are.

After the dog and your better half, that is. Don't fight it, down that path lies only sorrow and disillusion.

SwissToni, the whole idea of hereditary monarchy and the 'divine right of kings' is that God puts the best person in the job (an idea whose day has long gone). Whether Nicholas Sarkozy is good at his job or no, at the end of his term the French people can choose to have someone else have a go; they aren't stuck with a long line of inbred Sarkozies in perpetuity. As I said, better than any elected head of state would be one chosen totally at random. It could change every five years, ten years, or whatever, just so long as it wasn't hereditary.

sailwind, your dog is not an 'unpaid guard dog'. You are an unpaid dog-food opener and walkies companion. So am I, in addition to being a cat-litter-cleaner-upperer.

Just look at an English to Japanese dictionary, "assertiveness" has a negative connotation in Japanese.

    I looked.

    assertive/əsə́ːrtiv/ 形容詞自分の意見[希望権利など]をはっきり述べる, はきはきした, 積極的に主張する.

    Don't see anything negative there.

It's the only way people can see and understand the beauty of these creatures up close.

Maybe we should have zoos where we can go and see and understand the beauty of endangered Amazonian tribes, clicking bushmen, dancing Jarawa tribeswomen and Wall Street tycoons, all creatures I otherwise have little to no chance of ever seeing and understanding and may otherwise feel the urge to eat. (Yes, I am being sarcastic).

    That is christian thinking.

Sorry, but you're definitely banging on the wrong door there, as you'd know if you'd read 'most of my posts'.

Remember you were told that the animals are for us to do as we feel like as they are inferior.

Also told that women should shut up and be subservient to men too, your point being......?

    I fully get it.

When you rant on about how not acting like mindless barbarians is 'elevating animals to a higher status', you quite obviously don't get it.

You say we humans should be higher

No, I say we are higher.

You are also saying that a "certain" group of humans is better than the rest

    Where did I say that?

PETA and others like yourself elevate animals to a higher status than humans and thus deserving special treatment.

You don't get it at all. It's because we humans are of a higher status that we have the ability to feel compassion for and responsibility towards those weaker than ourselves, and doing so lifts us still higher. Obviously that doesn't apply to all humans, though.

This is what 1984 is all about, elevating a group above the rest.

1984 was about a small elite manipulating the unthinking majority through public mind control and newspeak. You're getting confused with Animal Farm which described the corruption of the leaders of the communist revolution in Russia. No one is suggesting putting whales or any other animals in government.

Doesn't it just mean they did the necessary paperwork? Until the t's are crossed and the i's dotted the defectors are still officially party members and theoretically able to claim the benefits of party membership, possibly even access to party funds. It's like getting a legal divorce after you've been living apart awhile.

is it 1984 all over again where some animals are more equal than others?

That's right, showing a bit of compassion is the same as allowing global whale domination.

Babies and little kids don't pay taxes, don't vote and aren't responsible for their actions, but the onus is on us to nurture and protect them, not abuse and torture them or use them to our own ends. We do this because we're stronger. This idea that we can do whatever we want because we're stronger is, far from being 1984, mediaeval and shameful.

SeaWorld’s motion to dismiss argues that, the amendment “only protects people, not animals, from slavery and involuntary servitude.”

So they don't deny that what they're doing to those animals is slavery and involuntary servitude. They can do it because - well, because they can.

It's tromp l'oeil art. There are no bits for kids to hang off or for the man to adjust. It's all just painted on the flat wall.

According to the local newspaper, the two children were making a snowman with the grandfather when the snow fell off the roof and buried the children. Both children were completely covered under a sheet of show measuring 15 m by 5m and 80cm thick. Neighbours told the newspaper that while the rescue services were working, the grandfather was frantically digging in the snow looking for the children. He was not sitting under the kotatsu eating mikan, nor was he 'all drunk'. He was on the scene and able to call for help immediately. The children were not playing alone, there was no neglect, only a (terrible) failure to realise that conditions were ripe for the snow to melt and slip.

Poor little Misaki-chan was apparently uninjured and died of asphyxiation.

you cannot really compare Japanese racism with that of Western Countries because of the lack of history of violence toward foreigners. This pretty much throws that out the window.

Because one incident involving four losers is no different from hundreds of years of slavery, lynchings, mob violence and official discrimination. Right.

it's equally difficult to deny the monarchy's popularity.

    Yes, amazing, isn't it?

To say Britains royal history would be unaffected should the monarchy not exist is naive.

I don't think anyone's saying history would be unaffected without the royals. Of course it would be affected - probably in a good way, for a start with the affairs of the Duchy of Cornwall being open to public scrutiny and subject to freedom of information - at present ministers must ask Charles' express permission before passing any laws that might affect the running of the Duchy, whether those laws are concerned with road safety, energy, gambling or coastal access.

What's naive is assuming that an hereditary monarchy naturally produces the best person for the job, or that the interests of a small group of basically not-very-bright people should take precedent over the people who pay for their luxury, simply on account of their birth and with no concern at all for merit.

If we must have a head of state, it would be better to have an elected one chosen by the people from the people. Charles could stand if he wanted. Or better still, since elections tend to be won by people who can afford to buy them, some kind of test involving prowess in waving from balconies, smiling vacuously, launching ships, cutting ribbons and making gormless remarks about things that are none of their business would give everyone a chance to 'serve the country'. Even pulling a random name out of a hat would be better than generation after generation of inbred mediocrity.

The ones who HAVE died are almost to a person from the now-defunct Soviet Union - either due to the Chernobyl fire or the runaway reactor on the Soviet sub

The Windscale accident in 1957 is estimated to have caused some 200 cancers in Britain, half of them fatal.

Typically, those with money or who are comfortable like the queen and royal family.

There are lots of Alf Garnets with no money who support the monarchy.

I cannot help thinking what does the UK have to offer or feel proud of if the monarchy is abolished

Accepting that Elizabeth is a lovely old bird, how does having Charlie and Camilla on the throne give the UK anything to be proud of?

I guess I'm not surprised... British "cooking" has it's very own reputation...

Well I'm surprised at the back-handed insult.....didn't expect that from you, Jacqueline......

I'm not talking about a microwave that just says 'oven' on it, I'm talking about a proper oven that also has microwave capability. I've used a few of them over the past 25 years and have never ruined a 'roast' or anything else.

I'd rather see people in fancy dress doing something positive like cleaning the streets than prowling through the woods killing wildlife. It's much healthier. And cool.

All these male posters who are getting upset about men dressing up for a bit of fun probably have some anxiety over their own masculinity, otherwise what's the fuss about? (Hint - if your masculinity depends on what you're wearing, you've got problems.)

Women can wear trousers and still be 100% feminine, but men need to dress butch to be men? Geddaway wit'ye.

Jacqueline, I didn't say microwave, I said electric oven-plus-microwave. They 'do' gratins, biscuits, pies and even small amounts of bread just fine. Good for people who don't have the kitchen space for an oven and a microwave. My kids had a small one each as students, I have a full-size one that caters for a family. It also has automatic settings that combine oven heat and microwave, plus a grill. I can 'zap', roast, grill, bake and casserole in it. Couldn't imagine being without it.

    1. The ice cream van.

The ice cream van that used to come round our way always played 'eine kleine natchmusik' to tell folk he was here. That tune is still associated with ice cream in my head. When my daughter was born we were given a baby mobile to hang over her cot, that played a selection of lullabies. Whenever it was the turn of the 'eine kleine', I would get a sudden insatiable urge to eat ice cream.

    1. Tape recorders.

My Mum insisted we get one of these to record 'Coronation Street' - she had to work when the programme was on, and didn't want to lose track of the 'story'. We would switch it on with the mike pointed at the telly, and everyone had to be quiet - so much as cough, and she would complain it spoiled the programme. A far cry from today's push-button blu-ray recorders.

    1. Returning empty soft drink bottles.

We still return them, via the recycling skip, but there's no deposit these days.....:-(
