"you don't contribute a whole lot to the Federal budget"

Oh, I'm sure I paid for a bullet or two.

USAR, my country is the good ol' US of A and I have been paying for these wars since I was of the tax-paying age whether I like it or now. And my point is simply that if war is what the US is going to do, then it would have been disingenuous for Obama not to discuss it last night.

The comments seemed a bit war-centric for what is generally expected at a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. I'm sure it made several in the audience and on the Nobel committee scratch their heads. But then, that's what they get for giving the award to an American president. It is fitting for an American to speak of war. It's what Americans do, and what their taxes pay for. I like Obama and think he spoke honestly about US policy. But was it appropriate for a Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech? The US hasn't been able to go through a single decade without beginning, instigating and/or participating in several wars. So I think the Nobel folks lost a bunch of credibility in bestowing the award on yet another American politician. (Then again, they gave Kissinger one so was there ever any credibility?)

in all the times President Obama referred to 'the Iraq war' in his speech, I didn't hear him say anything close to that.

Ronin, that's because he didn't refer to it at all. Not sure which speech you watched, but Obama didn't mention the word "Iraq" even once. (Here's the text, for your control-F pleasure. http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/12/10/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry5961370.shtml) He did mention Hussein, in the context of the first Iraq war and the invasion of Kuwait. So yeah, I don't think there are a lot of similarities between Obama & Bush in terms of rhetoric.

I wish President Obama would speak more like President Bush.

The difference, of course, is that in his speech Obama did not recognize the Iraq war as one of those occasions where the US was acting to defend itself.

I knew a new mother who was taking medication to treat depression and her parents at first tried telling her she didn't need it and then eventually just looked the other way. Luckily she didn't listen but dang, even assuming the woman has the ability/strength to go out there and seek help, it makes it extra hard when the parents and other close family members don't support them. I think killing the kids along with herself was probably some twisted form of punishment to those around her, not least of all her poor husband.

My estimated guess is that this is a classic case of depression combined with postpartum depression, compounded even more by an absent husband/father who lives separately AND a lack of adequate mental health resources in this country. This kind of thing is sad, but totally inevitable here until mental illnesses are addressed properly. Just look at Princess Masako? You'd think someone in her family would do something about it to improve things much the way Nancy Reagan did for Alzheimer's awareness in the US.

What happened to Becky's nice long hair?

It really brought out her forehead. As you can see, her new 'do is basically being used to keep it in check.

He did a terrible thing as a husband and a father

I can understand it is not great as a husband, but why does this reflect negatively as a father? For all we know he could be the best dad in the world. Cheating on your wife is not cheating on your kids.

The whole 'blue' thing with Christmas decorations here has always confused me until this pic. Now I think I get it: it looks like a winter night. That said, it does not necessarily look "Christmas-y". But then, the goal in Japan is to keep Christmas romantic for adults as opposed to colorful and memorable for the kids. So I guess it works in that sense.

Oh, my dear hostess Mizuki-chan. I totally feel for you! Yes, you are entitled to better working conditions. Thank you for your business card; I will make sure and contact your employer and demand better treatment for you & your colleagues. (BTW, I think it's totally cute how you drew a little heart symbol next to your name on the business card.) In the meantime, my mizuwari is nearly half empty and needs a little more ice.

Does her voice fit the character in House?

Uhh, no. In case you're unfamiliar with her, the actress in House is Mira Sorvino. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University before going off to become an Academy Award winning actress. While I am not overly familiar with Ms. Kano's professional achievements (beyond being a large-chested tarento), judging from the photograph above I think I can safely assume her vocal portrayal of the Sorvino character will fall a bit short of the real thing.

chotto, FWIW posters like myself have tried inserting different terms into the discussion to widen the variety of colorful language used to describe these colorful characters. Apparently the acceptable terms are "police," "cops," "clowns" and "keystones." You'll just have to live with that.

Moderator: However, we ask readers not to overdo the usage of disparaging terms such as "keystones" and "clowns," particularly when it is not appropriate.

Man, that episode is super old... Aired in January of 2008, so it'll be 2 years old by the time this thing airs. Mika Kano still looked remotely attractive back in those days.

Some people have no understanding or compassion whatsoever. How about just yanking his license and having him make compensation to the injured children and their families, which I'm sure he would gladly do?

First off, because at least by suing him you are putting a legal obligation on him to pay; not just wait around for this man to show up with an envelope of 100万円 and a bow. Second, it's well known that broken bones in very young kids like this can cause long-term growth problems. It's not just a matter of paying the hospital bill and signing "gomen" on the cast. I think the families should assert their legal rights, sue him, but at the same time say, "Sorry, sensei, but you know how it is. This is just a formality."
