I can barely stand Japanese TV shows for free; why on earth anyone would actually pay for it is a complete mystery and I doubt very much it will take off here. I note the "pay model" they are trying here in Japan has been largely a failure in the US. It is called Hulu Plus and it has not been successful.

Note the article does not state the rice was found to have "no radiation." It simply says it got the all clear. So there is most likely some levels of radiation; just not enough enough to convince the government it shouldn't be sold.

Canadian police divers discovered the remains of an unidentified man on Monday while searching for the body of a young Japanese woman

First, haven't seen the original Japanese tweet but that message does not appear to condone, or "seem to condone" (whatever that means) drunk driving. But even if it did, it is absolutely ludicrous that a school is out there policing tweets to determine the moral value of its students. Guess I could get suspended for 3 months for tweeting something like "shoplifted as a teen and it was such a rush." And common sense?? It's TWITTER for Chrissakes. Not too much intellectual debate going on in most tweets.

Clearly the problem here was that they tested a single photon. Should have tested a married photon - then it would be more motivated to travel faster than the speed of light such that it could use time travel and travel back in time and walk away from the altar when he had the chance.

Seen this same story many times over the years, always in the summer. Only the names of the parents and cities change.

But what really scares me is that we aren't allowed to listen to music while riding... That is news to me.

repeatedly disregarded warnings to desist viewing the phone.

Well there you have it. If you piss off an authority figure, they will show you up. And that is why this person was tagged. Not simply because she used it, but because she needed to be put in her place.

Kan has received so many blows while in office, he makes the Monica Lewinsky scandle look like soft porn!

Well I didn't really care beforehand but I guess I would have to say Kan ought to just quit. Hiring someone like this is beyond incompetence. And as accurate as Horsefella's comment is, even this Matsumoto guy takes the cake. It isn't often you see someone be so blatantly condescending when the entire point of being there is to offer a helping hand and at the same time repair the image of your party.

Saw the video of this guy this morning. How he could simply not manage to keep his act together and arrogance in check for a single-day visit to this devastated region is beyond me. Does Kan vet any of his appointees?! The whole lot of these morons need to go.

if he's maintaining that he didn't mean to kill her then what he's confessed to is surely manslaughter, not murder.

It's murder either way. Manslaughter is just "second degree" murder. Anyway if he admitted intended to strangle her, the prosecution ought to be able to slam dunk the case for first degree murder. The guy admitted he intentionally tried to cut off her breath and stifle her screams. Most of the time, strangling someone results in death. So he intended her death.

Wow, so this is the kind of thing that goes in trials in legal systems lacking the plea bargain. A confession of murder, by strangling no less, yet a claim it was not intentional -- all on the first day of trial!

Excellent idea. If I had paid the first class price, only to realize I'm sitting next to a screaming infant, I would regret my decision and wish I had selected economy. I mean, you don't pay that kind of dough to be miserable. That is what overpriced coach seats are for.

Agree with Ivan and I myself have commented on this site numerous times at how ridiculous it is for Japan to be the last place in the universe to get a film. When Mars gets cinemas, they will have earlier release dates than Tokyo. And all this despite that Tokyo goes absolutely crazy in promoting the films and laying out the red carpet for even B-list "stars" when they do their junkets. You'd think the Japan audiences make up for a big chunk of Hollywood's income but there they are, consistently getting films well after they have been viewed by pensioners in the outskirts of Poland.

Compulsory power usage cut implemented for first time in 37 years

Wait a minute... Is this headline saying that compulsory power usage will be cut, and such power usage will now be voluntary? Or is is that there will be compulsory cuts to power usage... Please clarify.

Stranger, good question. I imagine because it is more marketable for them to take on a name Japanese viewers are familiar with. Anna Tsuchiya has an American father but a Japanese name. Same goes for Risa Akiyama, Arisa Urahama, Kaera Kimura (British father); Catherine Seto (French father); Mariko Takahashi (American father); Christel Takigawa (French father); Ellie Toyota (British father), Michael Fujioka (American father)....and the list goes on and on. Of course there are "Half" talents out there with foreign names as well, so my theory of marketability isn't 100%. But if you do some research you'll see that the majority of them have Japanese last names. I believe this is because it is easier to succeed in Japan if you have a name folks identify with. And if you have a Japanese surname, combined with a western first name, it presents you as a "half" before you are even seen. Which again, is marketable in this country.

Agree with those saying Clapton's concert will probably not be worth it. While I haven't seen him in concert, reviews of his live shows at large venues in the US have been largely terrible. The guy comes off as very lazy and disinterested and even has other people in his band do all the heavy guitar riffing & soloing.
