We don't dispute the link between smoking and lung cancer simply because a large number of scientists have given their informed opinions on the subject. We trust their opinions and finding implicitly without actually knowing anything about cancer ourselves. But when it comes to global warming EVERYONE'S suddenly a scientist, taking tiny fragments of the whole arguement and using that to justify their pathetic ideologies.
If a majority of global warming scientists say global warming is both happening and caused by humans, there's very little chance they're wrong.

Suicide is cultural. Japan's problem is that it's not a rare event anymore for children to kill themselves, hence it's something that occurs to depressed children.
In SE Asian countries and Carribean countries, suicide is alien to their culture and is extremely rare. The problem is changing an entire culture.

$3.3 million? That is nothing at all compared to the amount of money in professional sports. Ichiro makes that much money in 3 months. Reduce salaries by half a percent and problem solved.
Of course, Japanese baseball is dead in the water, as all the best players leave and turn the focus to US baseball. There's very little long term future.

Give me a spicy Indian curry over anything else. How many stars do Little India in Ikebukuro get? Personally I'd give them 4 stars out of three.

I notice the Emperor is shaking hands, which is not a Japanese custom. But nobody in Japan cares about that. Too much partisanship, too much storm in a tiny, tiny teacup.

If the US has a long period of stagnation, I think they will have been extremely lucky. Foreign debt is expected to reach 85% of GDP within 10 years, the size of the entire military budget. At that stage (if not before), the US dollar will be sold down and the whole country become poorer and less powerful. I hope this doesn't happen but it's have to see it being prevented.

Mayuki, thanks for the post. It shed some light on the situation and I now agree with you that religion was probably a factor in this particular case. However, not every Muslim murderer kills for religious reasons and I caution against over-generalisations.
I realise the guy had never been to a war zone but treating victims day after day has got to warp your morale a little.

When Christians go on shooting sprees in America, their religion is not worthy of mention. But a Muslim goes nuts and it's suddenly a religious problem? I think this guy was in psychological tatters from all the trauma he'd experienced and flipped out. Not every Muslim hates America.

I feel sorry for the Japanese as they almost never have genuine cultural experiences while overseas. The choices seem to be group tour (bus, get off, pose for photos, bus) or independent (but they can't speak English so it's out of the question). Fear of the unknown seems to be a big factor as well.

What have sunspots got to do with anything? We're talking about greenhouse gases trapping heat, not sunspots.

You didn't make a mistake Sarge. You made two massive mistakes. You overestimated your own country's population by 30% and you were off by 12 000% in another key stat. I'd provide a long answer if I respected your intelligence but as it is, I'll just ask you a question. How does every other first world country pay for their public health system? Or don't you think America can do what Europe can?

And Sarge? 4% of 300 million is 12 000 000, not 400 000. You're off by a factor of 30. Lucky you're not a politician.

Um, Sarge...? The population of the US is 304 million, not 400 million. Seriously, you don't know the population of your own country? You're off by 96 000 000? And you expect people to be influenced by your comments after parading your gross ignorance?
Most negative comments about the health care bill seem to come solely from fear of change. "Taking away freedom"? What the hell does that mean? Freedom of access to health care is a basic human right in other rich countries. If anything, freedom is expanded, as it should be.

How about 'fly less' or 'eat less meat'? Not such a popular message when it's actually a sacrifice, is it? Turning off the lights - unambitious, low-hanging fruit.

The line about people buying fake medicine does seem concocted though. "Haha, I just spent $50 on fake Viagra, haha." The humour would soon wear out.

So an ancient and famous temple burning down isn't big news. Here's a thought. What if it was burnt down by a 10 year old tourist? Haha, it would be slightly bigger news then, wouldn't it?

Japanese Buddhists don't believe in Karma or reincarnation. They're not real Buddhists at all so you can't really apply Buddhist beliefs to this situation, eigonosensei and Altria.
