Two words: international waters. Or, even worse for Japan, Australian waters. Australia owns 48% of Antarctica so anyone within, I think, 200 kilometres of those parts of Antarctica are in Aussie waters. And hunting whales in against the law in Australian waters. Hope the Japanese don't get arrested as well.

So if giving a 'cash infusion' is socialism for the rich and nationalising the car companies is socialism by the government, and doing neither would be disasterous, doesn't that mean that socialism is the answer?

WTF are Panasonic doing? If Goldman Sachs could sell their shares for 148 yen on the market, why would they accept 130? Takeovers must be for significantly higher prices than the market. I would say 250 yen is a much more realistic offer.

NZ is famous for incredibly changeable weather. It can be sunny and warm and then an hour later freezing cold and rain. On the mountains it is more extreme so lots of people die because they don't prepare equipment for any situation.

ASPCA/RSPCA is a waste of time for anyone worried about animal welfare other than for pets. I think PETA are better in that they care about all animals, not just the cute ones.
As for fake fur...so lame! It's helping propogate the idea that fur is somehow sexy and desirable, which means more people will buy REAL fur. Nice body, poor brains, Aya.

When you want the economy to recover you should actually give the money to the poor because that was you can be sure it actually gets spent and stimulates the economy. Tax cuts for the rich just mean rich people will have bigger bank balances, it doesn't actually help at all. So Brown should keep the tax rate at 17.5% and increase unemployment insurance/minimum wages/tax rates for low income earners. Politically unpopular perhaps, but most effective.

There was an accident near my house and the glass and debris was just swept to the side of the road. I don't know who is in charge of the clean up, the police or the insurance company, but someone's not doing their job.

Economics 101: During the good times, governments save big surplusses. In bad times, governments spend these surplusses. Considering that Bush spent massiving during the good times and now Obama has to spend stave off a depression, isn't the US totally screwed?

Gusto's pizza's ARE pretty damn good compared to Saizeria's. I stopped going to Saizeria after the pizza thing happened. It's just not acceptable.

Well spotted Nessie.
There was a very similar article a few months ago that said the same thing but I think it's just shock journalism. Not that I care about Familiy Restaurants greatly but even if their numbers were cut in half, there would still be half a dozen within walking distance from my house and I live in the "country".

The more they crack down on it, the more expensive it gets and dealers get richer. Why not just legalise it? I don't know about Japan but in Australia about 75% of people are in jail for drug offenses and it costs $50 000 a year to keep one person in jail. If the government simply legalised it the benefits would be 1) saving on police, 2) savings on prison, 3) less people have criminal records, 4) it's easier to treat people who want to stop if it's not a crime, 5) no illegal dealers 6) the government can grow and sell the drugs legally and make money through sales and taxes.
And yes, I'm talking about all drugs. I think most people are clever enough to try them a few times and stop. People who really want to take drugs all the time can do it if they are illegal or not.

This is frigging disgusting and it's an indictment on society that this kind of thing passes for entertainment. Millions of people live in hunger. Yes, I realise that sending then a few thousand bowls on noodles won't make a difference but this kind of competition just shouts loud and proud "we don't care".

The US has a form of democracy yes, but it's about the minimum you could have and still call yourself a democracy. Firstly, a lot of donations come from big business so only parties that support big business get donations. Secondly, there is no proportional representation so voting for a third party is 'throwing your vote away'. Hence, US is doomed to two very similar parties until the end of time.

The problem with your comments, Sarge, is that you would never attack the Republicans and never defend the Democrats, even if McCain new policy was to dig for oil in your garden. And when you reach that level, you can't expect anyone to take you seriously. Try being more objective.

It's over, let's not get worked up.
McCain may have lost because of the economic crisis but he would also have lost on the Palin factor. It was such a stupid choice of VP. He's 72 so stastisically his chance of dying in office is very high, greater than one in three. Palin is more clueless than even George Bush, plus she's a wacko with extreme right wing views and has very few ideas or leadership skills of her own.
But had there been no economic crisis or Palin I think Obama would have won anyway. America is in love with him.
