****why is a plant that grows taking up CO2 which is later released when it is burned as biofuel any greener than a cow that takes up CO2 and emits it partly on the field or when it is consumed?****

It's a good question but the most important thing is efficiency. If you grow plants, you degrade the land. If you raise cattle, you also degrade the land. But the latter is much worse because cattle eat plants, not just grass but corn, soy, maize etc. So you're degrading the land to make plants and then further degrading the land by feeding those plants to cattle.

Also, fruit and vegetables produce many times more food in a given area than cattle farming (or any other kind of animal farming). So less land is required. Hey presto, more forest.

Sarge, surely you could put a cow in a sealed area, measure accurately the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted and then multiply by the number of cows.

Yet again, another negative, snipey, poorly thought out question. Try positive arguments defending your own side for a change. Warning: may involve thinking.

    From a UN site

Which causes more greenhouse gas emissions, rearing cattle or driving cars?

    Surprise!

According to a new report published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, ****the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport. It is also a major source of land and water degradation.

Didn't take long to find this information but, hey, parroting Rush Limbaugh's hateful ideology beats doing research any day. Just stick to that.

Sarge, produce some reasoning to back up your opinions, or they're worthless. A huge amount of greenhouse gas (about 20% of the total) comes from meat farming, directly and indirectly. This is the same as that produced by cars.

The best thing about Japanese cartoons is that they feature vaguely realistic family settings and thus children can relate to them. Chibi Maruko, for example, has a three generation household and many problems are ones faced by children. It's better than the crap we had on TV as kids - killer robots for boys and sparkly ponies for girls.

I remember as a child I was taught to shake hands and praise my opponent, win or lose. It's called 'sportsmanship' and I haven't seen a whole lot of it recently from anyone related to the Tokyo Olympic bid.

Obama's handling of hurricane Katrina was also pretty bad. And he could have fought the civil war a bit better. On the other hand, the Louisiana Purchase was nicely done.

The London Olympics will be the 18th in Europe. The US has had the Olympics only 4 times. So I expected the US to get them this time.

I agree with tclh, Presidents and Prime Ministers shouldn't get involved in the Olympic lobbying process. Sport shouldn't be related to politics in the same way that religion shouldn't be. And PMs etc have much more important things to be doing (like brush-clearing).

So the 106 delegates have had 4 years to make up their minds/be bribed and because Obama failed to changed enough minds in his 45 minutes he's a failure? I thinketh not.

Everyone should be buying guns to support our 2nd amendment rights - why not focus on more important rights like freedom of speech, privacy rights etc that are slowly being chipped away? If the government was talking about making it illegal to stab yourself in the foot with a fork would you do it just to "defend your rights?"

I'm seeing a lot of right-wing contradiction over these bailouts. Bush bailed out the banks and that was fine because, hey, it was Bush. Then Obama bailed out GM and suddenly America's gone Soviet? You guys seriously make it hard for anyone else to take you seriously because there's nothing the Republicans can do that you'll criticise and nothing the Democrats can do that you won't.

BOEs usually (always?) pay 300 000 yen a month, which is good, but the 'dispatch companies' take 50 000 - 70 000 of that, leaving the teacher on a pretty average wage. With the crapification of Japanese jobs, it is still an above average job by Japanese standards but most teachers could be making much more back in their home countries.

Just a word of advice to anyone who is married to a Japanese national: quit your job immediately and just do privates. You'll double your salary within a year, be able to choose who you teach and when you teach them. I have no sympathy for those too lazy to take this step.

I personally know hundreds of Canadians who moved to Cuba after watching Sicko. And the Prime Minister's wife went to Venus for a night. It's a magical, mystical world.

Comebacks seem to be taking place at younger and younger ages. 23? I was in university then. Anyway, never heard of this woman or anyone else in this story but the fewer Japanese celebrities the better. They're all annoying.

Half the respondents of a new poll say taxing the richest Americans by at least 50% is a great idea When you get down to it, most people are socialists. The term has been demonised so they don't identify themselves as such, but break socialism down to its base policies, ask people if they agree or not and you'll find that most people qualify as lefties.

America should have let its banks go bankrupt? That would have been interesting.

Public funds should be used if it's in the public interest.

Owning shares in an unethical company doesn't mean you support their activities. What if there was one company so evil that only one person was immoral enough to own those shares? I personally have shares in mining companies that are exploiting Aborigines and their land in Australia. I don't support those activities and would gladly attend a protest against that company (ERA).

I'm looking forward to seeing the film.
