Gainjinocchio, you make no point at all. The only inference is that you think 7000 lives are unimportant. BTW if you check suicide rates on Nationmaster (awesome statistics site) you'l find that if Japan reduced its suicide rate to 23000 a year they would be far below a lot of first world countries (such as Australia).

These lights will save nothing like 7000 lives but even if it's just half a dozen a year they've worked well.

I associate those lights with heroin and depression. They are sometimes used in public toilets to stop heroin addicts from being able to see their veins.

I'm sure he'd love to be arrested if he gets a per centage of the gross from the film. The publicity would turn his film into an outstanding success story.

4thestate - Do you have a point to make or just be abusive? I shouldn't have to point out the inference of my point but I will just for you. If the first world consumes many times more resources per person than the 3rd world then should we not concentrate on the first world? Do you have an opinion?

dontpanic - I stand corrected. Although methane and CO2 are both greenhouse gases, which is the point I wished to make. Cheers.

Eating less meat is certainly the most constructive thing most people can do. I believe about 20% of CO2 comes directly or indirectly from meat farming (land clearing/animals farting/increased water usage etc etc). It's about the same as all the cars put together...

Remind me again... who uses more resources, an American/Australian/Brit or an Indian/Phillipino/African? Because our ecological footprints are many, many, many times higher in the West we should try to improve our own environmental practices before blaming the third world.

I don't care that she wasn't buckled up. I spent my childhood years riding in a car without belts and I'm ok. Are you a representative sample Bushlover? Also, check the definition of 'survivor bias'. Where are all the people saying 'I spent my childhood years riding in a car without belts and I'm a vegetable/dead because I didn't use a seatbelt'?

Lucky I wasn't there to give medical aid because I would have been incapacitated with laughter.

This guy's a living joke. It makes the South Park Gay Fish episode even funnier though.

Inkjet, good question but one that is easily rebutted. Whenever you look at the nature of human beings you have to imagine cavemen life. Modern humans are basically the same as cavemen. Men were far more likely to be killed young as they hunted animals whereas women did not. I could go on but I think the point is proven.

There are evolutionary reasons why women prefer older men. If they've survived to middle or old age it probably means they have superior genetics (people with weaker genetics didn't survive to old age). There are lots of young men but because there are lots we don't know which ones are superior yet.

Of course, like many evolutionary traits, this shouldn't be relevant in the modern world but still persists.

I hope the GOP are going to stop being a rabble and form an opposition one of these days. They just can't get anything right. Come on guys, democracy implies at least 2 parties. Get your act together!

beowulf, Unit was one of the most awesome albums I've ever heard and it's extremely impressive they could change their sound from the Hamburger/New EPs to the Unit sound and still retain their fan base. Bands should keep experimenting and changing instead of doing the same old thing to lock in their fan base. However, I think Regurgitator took this too far.

Regurgitator are irrelevant now unfortunately. Their first 2 EPs and first two albums were amazing but they've sucked for the last 10 years. Do they still have any kind of following in Japan or anywhere else?

Smithinjapan has a good point. Most countries don't fear socialism. The SDP had power in 1993 and their name was the Socialist Party at that time. Fundamentally capitalism is where money rules (= the rich have all the power) and socialism is when the people control the means of production, thereby creating a more equal society. If Mr Hatoyama becomes a raving Marxist it's fine by me.

America always does badly in this kind of thing: rights of women, rights of children, civil rights, life expectancy, education, health, incarcaration rates ... is anyone even mildly surprised?

There are huge differences between LDP and DPJ, anyone who can't see these hasn't studied the issue much. DPJ will spend money on health, education and rebates for families with children. LDP will spend it on (mostly) unnecessary construction. Also, DPJ doesn't come with the inertia of decades of power or even a history of corruption.

And Masswipe, can you give one example of how the LDP helped Japan become a powerful manufacturing country? Also, proof that it wouldn't have happened anyway, no matter who was in power.
