    everton2,

I'dlike to speak for Jack as he's probably too busy to read JT: I would rather look like I do than think like you do.

Why the hell are still you running this story, JT? It's been festering here for over 2 weeks now. Don't you have anything fresh to replace it with?

    grsmaz,

Hitler was a Christian. Does this mean that Christians are neo nazis?

Actually, Hitler just called himself a christian. Big, big difference, buddy.

    Some14some,

Well said! Bad news is depressing, true, but maybe it helps to keep the majority of those who watch it on the straight and narrow.

    Alfie in Tokyo,

What precisely would that (putting her away for a long time) achieve?

If it's discovered that the woman is responsible for her actions, and it was murder, and not a terrible accident, then at the very least it would probably stop her reoffending, and send a clear message to others that this kind of thing is wrong. It's all quite simple, at least on paper.

Anybody read Frank Herbert's Dune? The same strategy was employed in it, and also by a group of religious fanatics against an empire. This story's quite eerie in the parallels that can be drawn to that novel

Poor child. Poor woman. Poor plumber. It's so desperately sad that Ritsuko felt so helpless that she took it out on someone even more helpless than herself.

Surely the oldest profession in the world should get the most respect. This is Japan, after all!

    Everton2,

Some did that already. Alfieintokyo's parents.

My experience is that soon or later that child will start to hit others as a result of examples you have set.

I have yet to see a kid spank another, or give them a slap on the back of the hand. Punch, kick, headbutt, etc., yes, been there, done that, when I was a kid. It wasn't because my parents spanked me though, it was because I was a kid, and I was angry. In fact, my parents taught me in no uncertain terms (you know what I mean)that hitting other kids was wrong. And you know what, I stopped doing it partly because I knew how much it hurt. The old warning "let's see how you like it" is a pretty good way of teaching kids a little consideration for others, I suspect.

    Blue Tiger,

I agree. The former is abuse; the latter, punishment. As long as that punishment is followed up with loving support to help the kid improve, then I don't see a long term problem with it. The problem with the enforcement of any sort of consequences, corporal or otherwise, is that lack of support after the offence.

    Williamsmith,

I don't believe discipline of any kind is necessary. Discipline only teaches what to think, not how to think.

Perhaps you'd like to reconsider your opinion. As I just suggested, discipline followed by support, including teaching kids HOW to avoid doing bad or stupid things, should be part and parcel of every parent's toolbox.

Maybe you just need to define more clearly what you consider discipline to be, as I can't imagine that you're suggesting we should not correct our kids when they, for example, hit another kid!

This is the most refreshing review I've ever read on Japan Today! I though making fun of a product would have got you the sack and forced you to have to work at the Japan Times. It sure the hell ain't another ad posing as news, capone.

    JT,

We are all deeply grateful for the translations of Japanese news stories that you provide, and it's good to see that even prefectual governments can come to their senses and overrule their leaders.

However, could you please, please get your people to use English words like "celebrity", "star" "actor", etc. rather than the Japanese "talent". Or would you at least consider proofreading the stories before putting them up? In fact, I'd be happy to oblige; For a small fee, of course!

    Blue Tiger,

Think before you speak next time. Read telecaster player's comments and try to understand the logic behind them, and just try to imagine yourself in the position of the baby. Which would you prefer if your life was literally in the hands of a woman who was going to get rid of you one way or the other? I'm not trying to be nasty, mate, but you need to try puuting yourself in other people's place first. In fact, you should also put yourself in the woman's shoes and ask yourself what you'd do? A little sympathy, and even empathy goes a long way.

    Sabiwabi,

Israel was created by force and it expanded by force. Israel never stopped the war they started.

Are you suggesting that, assuming that creation of a state by "force" is wrong, Israel has no legitimate claim on any of its territory? And if so, Israel could "stop the war" by giving it all up?
