The so-called terror suspects have already been completely cleared! They just happened to share a name with real suspected terrorists, which is probably why they were allowed on the plane.

God, this site is so slow to report things.

Strange, I thought Iwojima had been restored to it's original name of Iwoto. Silly me, obviously journos know better.

Hubby told me about this last night. Apparently her finger got stuck and the safety kicked in, stopping the escalator. Then mum panicked and dragged the child away, pulling the hand and finger apart in the process. Normally they could have got the finger out unharmed if it wasn't for that.

And the place she got her finger stuck was where the hand rail disappears into the ground at the top (as I recall) of the escalator.

The mother wasn't taking proper care of the child. You can't keep an eye on a child in a place like that and talk to a salesperson. That's why you keep hold of them, or put a harness and reins or some other sort of safety contraption on them so you can keep them close.

Grotesque and tragic. It's not the first time unborn-baby-theft has happened in the US either. The next question is, how long before the copy-cat crimes start happening in other nations?

And before the Americans get hot under the collar, in all fairness I'm sure such crimes have been taking place for centuries, but if they were so common they were certainly under-reported and so copy-cat crimes were unlikely.

Well, Perverted is as perverted does. How crass to see even women being so pathetic as to take the food. Still, I suppose no-one's being raped, tortured or murdered so no reason to complain. The plate doesn't look too happy about it though, talk about a false smile. Maybe she got prodded, possibly on purpose. (I'd probably poke her in the belly with my chopsticks if someone tried to get me to eat off her.) And none of your corny and smutty jokes!

Sappquest is right, they say it all came from a ship/ships, including the oil.

God knows where the missing plane is, they could all be looking in totally the wrong area.

I still suspect all aboard died though, but as of now we're all back to square one, not knowing where the heck it came down or why.

I'm suspicious of those tranmissions from the black box etc. though, they don't seem to have a very large range, so unless a suitably equipped vehicle happens to pass within range they may never be found. I still say they should have GPS, surely that would have a bigger range and make it easier to find them?

As someone with a small child I totally agree that people with children should all be in one area of the plane, preferably at the back. But I've seen people in first with children, asleep at the time I was there but still capable of caterwauling with the worst of us economy class scum.

Last year on the way back from blighty, his second flight, they upgraded us from world traveller to w.t.plus without warning. It could have been very nasty, as they'd placed us in the 2 middle seats of the middle 4, with an option of either of the 2 baby-seat tables. Fortunately the British man in one end seat overheard my exclamations of dismay and swapped, or it would have been ridiculous. BT are obviously not the most cunning of flight operators to try such a silly trick!

But why make parents pay extra? The rear of the plane should be cheaper, and everyone taking advantage of the low cost would only have themselves to blame when they got deafened! We don't need extra staff to babysit either, and being able to see other tots would actually help our kids to stay happy. Really, there's a lot to be said for keeping the tiny ones together.

Poor kid, and poor sisters having to remember the loss of their baby brother for the rest of their lives. Stupid woman, she had no business leaving the flat for more than 2 minutes to pop down to the mailbox, and even then she should have taken the baby with her unless he was safely asleep in his cot. The 4 year olds on their own would have been risky, but a 1 year old as well? Plain neglectful. I hate to say it but I won't be surprised if she's another mother who was at the pachinko parlor leaving her kids to take care of themselves. It does happen too often with young parents here. And I'm one who normally sticks up for the parents against all the haters on here, but in cases of neglect I make an exception.

With regards to all the comments about whether it's more or less prevalent here than 'back home', I think the most common cause of accidental kids' death in the UK (just going by headlines, not meaningful or accurate,) is a tv falling on them. Most kids end up with a broken leg, but an awful lot die from their injuries and yet so many parents have unsecured tvs lurking about their homes, even in the tot's rooms, even on fairly high cupboards. (That's supposed to keep it a bit out of the kid's reach, but actually when the kid climbs on the cupboard it just gives the tv further to fall and allows it to cause even more damage if it hits the child. The cupboard usually isn't secured either.)

If he can prove that he can do the same time in a normal swimsuit, without any performance enhancing drugs or anything, then I'll believe that the fancy swimsuit doesn't constitute cheating. Until then, this one and the GB designed one they permitted in the olympics, are equal to amphetamines in my view.

But if he could swim that fast without it he wouldn't be whinging now would he?

BTW, what sort of suit was Lochte wearing when he broke the previous record?

I really despair when I read about this sort of accident. The thought of all that potential suffering is enough to send you to an early grave or a loony bin. But if this plane was so modern, weren't any of the parts fitted with any kind of GPS or similar locating device? After 9/11, and various accidents when it took months to find the wreckage you'd really have expected them to fit something like that to make it simple to locate a plane when things go wrong. Or maybe there's footage from a satellite camera which might shed some light on where they ought to look? As things stand, they think it might have gone down immediately after the turbulence, but supposing it didn't? Why should I believe that the communications are immune to breakdown but the plane isn't? They could be miles away from the turbulence, without GPS or footage from satellites we may never find them, including any survivors that there may be - slim though the chance may seem.

It's very irritating that so many people here like to point the finger of blame, at the father for being possibly drunk and neglectful, at the mother for not calling for help. I'm pleased that there are plenty of people who see things more realistically though, but I'll add a less hostile voice to the clamour just to even things up a bit more.

This is very tragic, as such incidents always are. I'd like to know what this illness was, but I find it very easy to believe that it could have contributed to a sudden birth and seriously endangered both mother and child. Some diseases of pregnancy are like that. Why it wasn't diagnosed is a more important question.

As for the father, he could have been taking a nap, or sorting the laundry, helping other kids with homework, or any number of things that would make it more difficult for him to hear groans or feeble cries coming from another room. Don't forget she was obviously unwell and may not have had the strength to do much except wrap up the poor mite. Unfortunately being wrapped up wasn't enough to save the baby.

As for the induction of births, I have no reason to believe it's routine in Japan. Maybe some doctors or maternity units might be aggressive and stupid in that way, but the hospital I went to was very clear that we should go in when labour got to a certain point, and the doctor only offered induction because I was halfway dilated while still only 39 weeks, and with no Japanese language ability to speak of it would have been very dodgy me trying to get to the hospital on my own if my hubby was at work. It was obviously going to be a short labour once it finally got going.

Anyway, head injuries are weird things, it's entirely possible that she got up and told the man she was all right and made him go away. Then after he'd gone she could have just collapsed. Head injuries are totally unpredictable and can cause strange symptoms. OR he could have just hit her and run off. Or cycled off rather. But there's reasonable doubt about that right now.

Hope the poor woman makes a full recovery, she's probably got a good decade or 2 (or 3) ahead of her, all being well.

Why should blood streaks on the road prove that he was under the car? Limbs have been known to trail you know, sometimes dragging along the floor and rubbing on the surface of the road, causing that unusual effect of bleeding on the road. Not to mention that liquids generally travel down, due to some outrageous concept known as gravity. Where else would the blood end up if not on the road?

Thank god for that! I thought he had lots of time to "improve" them and failed dismally!

Still, my 1 year old likes the show - along with all the others at that sort of time - so it's useful to keep him from grabbing my legs while I clear up after breakfast. Not much use for anything else though in my opinion, but then I don't need to learn English.

    TOOT-TOOT-PARP-PARP-WAIL=WAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO sorry fatloser, you are of course almost 199% right.

It really does state in the article that the man was dragged under the car.

    Well, actually it says

It is suspected that the car dragged Suzuki for about 3 km

without actually mentioning whether or not he was under the vehicle - but what the heck, who cares whether he was under it or dangling off the side of it, or even trailing from the exhaust at the back. I still hold to my original suggestion of suitable punishment.

Most utterly and convincingly apologetic for trying to offer a suggestion in reply to smartacus's query, especially without switching on the damn T.V and watching the news first - meek and mild me goes off with the dunce's cap into the corner.

Incidentally fatloser, my name ain't HONEY, dammit!

Smartacus, when someone gets hit by a car they normally get flipped onto the bonnet (hood in U.S.) and maybe he was either draped across the bonnet right where the driver could see him, or he went further and got caught on something sticking out of the roof of the vehicle - I don't know, maybe a roof rack or ornamental metal trimming which had come loose?

But however he got stuck, there's no way the psycho driving didn't realise he'd hit someone/something, and I hope they catch him/her and run him/her over with a steam roller. Fat chance, but I can wish.

Whoever invented this headline doesn't think much of Obama! Reveling in endorsements and - last but not least - mountains of cash!

Personally I can't stand the man - don't like either of 'em though. But Obama is particularly worrying because of his fake stance. Don't you see him putting on that old 'integrity' act? He looks more like a trustworthy pres of past times than the real ones did. He's been trained into the walk, the stance, the posture while speaking so he gets that "U.S. pres" style voice. He's even been trained in the 'blanking people who try tripping you up mid-speech by ignoring them completely' trick. Things like that are so obviously artificial I can't understand why you Americans don't see it. But considering the bumbling old man (aka Bush-clone) who's the other contender I suppose you're willing to take artificial integrity. After all, you're not going to find the genuine article in a politician.

What a relief I don't have to choose between them - but what a damn shame it won't just be the Americans who pay the price for whichever choice they make - the whole world will have to pay.
