    He's like a real-life version of the main character from the Team America movie.

    Go on Marky.. ACT your way past that terrorist and into the cockpit. You can do it!

    But, what about pages cached by search engines like google and yahoo... if they're still readable most of wikipedia is.

    @Johannes Weber

    If large scale immigration happens most of the people WILL do menial labour and other unskilled jobs, to think otherwise is completely unrealistic.

    I wonder whether Tsukuba provides such an example. Foreigners are very visible there, especially around the uni and the big research centers, but I wonder really how many there are... whether its a significant number. Also you're talking mostly about quite highly educated and therefore well off people - they tend to live independently.. nice apartment, car etc. Compare to the Brazillians in nearby towns in Ibaraki, the impression I get is that they do tend towards that kind of parallel society you're talking about. I think its an unavoidable fact that comes with any significant immigration.

    For those commenting on the helmets, its highly debatable whether helmets offer any benefit in a collision with a car. Some experts have claimed that they may make certain types of injuries worse.

    30,000 yen but add to that a 3G subscription to play online = expensive.

    @USNinJapan2 - same here.

    One of the best teams in history and probably the most effective player of all time, but completely un-inspirational.. boring in fact.

    Santos all the way. They have a realistic chance too, as they're more up for it.

    Kashiwa played really well but the quality of all three goals from Santos shows that they're on a different level. Santos just sat back at the end but could have gone up a gear any time they wanted.

    They cleaned up because thier home doesnt stop at the front gate, its a way in which to express defiance towards the villians who rioted in thier area.Its an English thing pride and dignity they did the same during world war2, the only difference they are under attack from lowlife criminals

    But no, its not world war 2, and the defiance is, well, very lame. There are pictures of the police standing by and watching as the rioters went wild. Apparently that was an order, i.e. surrender - hardly the ww2 spirit.

    All credit to some people who did actually stand up to them, like the Turkish guys standing outside their shops ready to fight them off with sticks, now that showed pride and dignity.

    Why don't they make the rioters tea and cakes while they're at it?

    Seems like in the UK now you have to leave work early to get home before the riots start and then get to work early the next day to clean up the mess.

    I have seen worse riots in Britain in my lifetime and they were on racial grounds that divided the country.

    This one hasn't finished yet, I'd save your comparisons until then. Its not storm in a teacup that's for sure.

    This will end soon, probably when it rains.

    Are you advising the Metropolitan Police or something? I think that's what they are hoping for too.

    Reinforces my belief that the country has lost its way. As others have said, best to stay here and not go back. Social structure has broken down. The police are going to have to learn fast how to deal with this or bring the army in.

    The fact that our whole financial system and debt spiral was based on the assumption of constant economic growth. The world is not an ever expanding bubble and resources are finite so that put limits on growth.

    Especially for some wealthy, developed countries, the realisation that there may be no growth left and we're in serious trouble paying what we owe. That requires adjustments, which might be painful for those of us who are used to more.

    What really worries me is that this is not a crisis or a great recession, but the new normal.

    The UK. Japan has become a nation of unregulated workers, short term contracts and non-tax payers (not the employees fault, to a large extent, don't get me wrong).

    The UK has crippling youth unemployment though. Its bringing up a generation that aren't even getting the experience of what its like to work.. except the lucky ones stacking shelves at Tesco.

    I'm not saying the situation in Japan is great, just that some other developed nations are doing much worse. Look at Spain with 20% unemployment and almost 50% among young people. Japan's future doesn't seem that grim by comparison.

    ...and of those in employment, how many are working proper jobs, at a fair wage, with a full benefit system in place? A very low percentage, I would wager. The future of this country is looking very grim indeed.

    Apart from a handful of countries blessed with natural resources and fairly low populations, where would you find a higher percentage?

    This will be like the Gary McKinnon case all over again. A decade fighting US pressure for extradition where they can give him 50 years, cause in the UK he'd get a slap on the wrist and that's probably all he needs.

    One example where I worked were the very strict and inflexible rules about business trips, wherby you can't have any 'free' days during trips etc. One employee had two meetings in Europe separated by a few days and ended up flying back to Japan in between the meetings only to spend less than a full day here before heading straight back to Europe. To make it even worse the company is constantly telling everyone how they're doing everything possible to save energy.

    Thats the really annoying thing. I want to decide for myself which online services I use or not. I'll take my chances with PSN, albeit without supplying credit card info.

    @YongYang: OK, but presumably some British scientists returned from the Manhattan project, and from the late 50s the two countries started to officially collaborate so surely its fair to say that the US did help the UK get develop some of those warheads.
