When and how did the brits make or get these? Did the US help them?

Are you joking? Try reading a bit about the Manhattan project, the Cold War.. anyway, short answer is yes, or well, that they helped each other.

Well done David Cameron. The only reason the Conservatives didn't win by a landslide is that Labour has done its upmost to create a society dependent on handouts from the government. Cameron was honest and realistic about the need to cut the deficit but many would have rather seen the country borrow its way into oblivion.

A heavy price to be paid though, to have this man Clegg as deputy PM. He sniffed what was the only chance he will ever get of some actual power, offering himself to either party for the best price. Lets hope none of his crackpot ideas become reality.

World Cup Tickets aren't that expensive

For Japanese people they aren't.. for the local South Africans I heard at least some tickets are about 1 weeks pay for someone on minimum wage, anyway...

If all the tickets aren't sold FIFA will still want the stadiums to look full on TV so maybe they'll let local people attend at much reduced prices. That's a good thing. FIFA could just choose a dead cert payday every 4 years by holding the tournament in European and other wealthy nations, but I'm glad they haven't done that and I think I think SA will be a very different and interesting world cup.

These protests you speak about were nothing more than opportunistic gangland riots- they had nothing to do with Iraq, Saddam, or the war on terror.

What on Earth are you talking about? The protests against the Iraq war were the biggest protests that the UK has ever seen. The Feb 2003 protest in London saw 1 million people on the streets. That has to be some indicator of the strength of the objection people felt towards the war.

Of course, a shatterproof pint could still be used like a club in fight

    Erm, yeah... of course.

But noticeably, no officials were talking about reforming the British binge drinking culture at the root of the problem.

That is a quite ridiculous statement. There have been all sorts of efforts to do this as long back as I can remember. Licensing laws were changed in 2003 and there is even some talk now of making alcohol more expensive. Its just difficult to change.

is that a euphemism for what I think it is?

We humans cannot engineer our way out of global warming, although scientists who believe in geo-engineering have offered theories on how to do it. There are no easy fixes.

So the author is saying "There is no way to do it, but there are theories about how to do it". Ridiculous!

The level of technological development achievable by human beings is by far the greatest unknown variable when making predictions on a scale of 500 years, and after all, necessity has and always will be the mother of invention.

Gordon Brown should shut up about this. If he really wants to stick up for someone he should do something about the US extradition of Gary McKinnon, a UK citizen with Apergers who has never even been to the US but faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in jail there. Now thats an injustice. This story on the other hand - being caught with smuggling 4kg of heroin - thats indefensible.

The unemployment rate in Japan increased by about 1.5% in 2009. Apart from those that happened to be part of that statistic then I guess the direct effects of all this in 2009 weren't that bad. I'm guessing that young people entering the job market were affected the most.

Getting more people back to work, while fulfilling its manifesto promises, will require yet more increases in the government debt

Now this is the real issue. Tax revenues are falling and are expected to make up less than half of next year's government budget. For a country with a debt-to-GDP ratio that already exceeds 170%, it will interesting to see where this goes.

One of the most common questions I get about tech from visitors to Japan is “Where do I get a cheap digital camera?”

I'm sorry to be pedantic but that question is about shopping, not technology.

Well, just one stadium, the new Wembley, cost 800 million pounds so this 300 million for something as big as the World Cup doesn't seem crazy. Especially when you take into account the costs of security.

The things that give England a great chance for this one: the (winter) climate and having a tactically astute manager. The heat has been a real problem in most world cups because England only play well at a high tempo. The players are no better than we had in the past though. Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard are no better than, for example, Lineker, Waddle and Hoddle.

I thought the last GDP figures showed Japan pulled out of recession. But we still seem to be getting bombarded by these "amid the current recession" type articles. I would like to see them stop, at least until we're back in recession.

I guess the boom times for "super-luxury tableware" are gone forever.. as other comments have said, its bubble-era stuff.

Group B: England, Argentina, Germany and Japan. eheheh. Wouldn't it be fun?

But impossible as at least two of Argentina, Germany and England will be in the same group of top seeds, probably all three.

The classical statues, such as the Buddha in Kamakura are cool but this 1990's monstrosity in Ushiku is a blot on the landscape. Might not have looked so bad in a big city surrounded by other things but its out in the middle of nowhere, just looks weird to me.
