If I throw a bottle at some other people or their property, damage their property, trespass on their property, violate weapons laws on their property, or ignore the spirit of sea laws and obstruct the passage of another vessel, I would fully expect to arrested and prosecuted for doing so.

Crimes must be and are punished in any law abiding society.

If Bethune were not to be treated in accordance with the law then it would send a very bad message out to other would-be criminals.

    HeyLars,

Plus that's just the "humane killing" oxymoron. "Humane living" should be taken into much greater consideration than it is.

Heh, if what I see is your "tolerant" mode I'd hate to see the damage done when you were in your "intolerant" mode.

Different folk obviously have different reasons. It's more than a little disingenuous to accuse people of hypocrisy and double-talk just because their reasons are different to the reasons you may have had explained to you by other people.

Oh gee sorry. But I'm still not sure which anti-whaling arguments are supposed to be valid and which are not. In total, they are clearly contradictory and double-speak.

Moderator: Readers, whaling is not relevant to this discussion.

    Disillusioned,

First, I don't think much of your argument, it's a big fat double-standard. To illustrate:

Taiji folks are just one group of Japanese who live out in the whoppers down on the rocky coast of Wakayama who catch a relatively small number of dolphins in accordance with Japanese law.

    sharky1,

Just because they are famous, they think they can coerce anyone to talk with them...

Yeah, it's bizarre. Do they think these people are employed to sit around and wait for people like them to come along and expect to have "peaceful conversations"? These are the same people who have just been sneaking around taking secret films of dolphin hunting and criticising it. The same mentality is seen with the Sea Shepherd morons who used their plastic boat to dangerously harass a Japanese vessel for hours but then turn around and complain that they were nailed after they recklessly failed to take actions to avoid a collision which resulted in their boat being severely damaged and could have been worse if they weren't so lucky.

    timorborder,

Eric Cartman is probably not available, as he is on record as "not giving a crap about whales".

He would be up for it if money and TV is involved though, so perhaps there is hope.

    borscht,

when there is no danger of violence?

Do you believe that people think anti-whaling activists pose no danger of violence, or is that just your own opinion?

    HeyLars,

I too have seen some very disturbing cow slaughter footage... I try to avoid beef now actually, especially Australian beef which I no longer buy at the supermarket. Wish there were more, cheap, antarctic whale meat available.

    HeilanClansman,

Domestication... yeah we can lock animals up and domesticate them. So? Why does that make it "right"? The big cop out in this argument is that you talk only of "humane killing". What about "humane living"?

There's nothing "wrong" with leaving animals in their natural environment and then catching them in sustainable numbers.

The acid test is whether you would prefer to be born as a cow or a whale, and I've never had anyone tell me that they would rather be a cow so as to to get the "humane killing" at the end, as opposed to opting for a "humane living" - a life of freedom that marine animals get with some small chance of getting nailed by harpoon or spear in what sometimes (but certainly not always) proves to be a more prolonged death on average.

stevecpfc, killing cows is western culture. Japan imported it (indeed it used to be illegal to kill cows). Japan's acceptance and adopting of some outside culture doesn't mean Japan should throw out all it's own culture.

The odd thing is that the anti-whalers often proclaim that "if only Japan would hunt whales close to home then they wouldn't be criticised so much".

Yet Taiji whalers are hunting dolphins as close to home as any whalers, and the fact that they come in for such special attention just illustrates the two-faced lies and double-talk of the anti-whalers perfectly.

These people are so crazy and self-centered.

Who else would expect to turn up in Taiji and have a "peaceful conversation" with anyone they would please to, besides anti-whaling zealots?

    YongYang,

    Straight back at you.

The people voting for the EU member nation politicians who fail to implement regulations in accordance with their ICCAT obligations are in much need as anyone of education.

The cause of over-exploited tuna stocks is over-exploitation of tuna stocks.

People can only consume tuna if it has been caught. When too many are being caught, that is the point where the governments responsible have to stand up and look out for their interests properly by ensuring quotas are not exceeded.

    wakaionna,

A universal ban wouldn't work because it is not a real solution. You have to look at the whol situation, which includes people as well.

    Sharyn,

I am not a Japanese citizen, most people can tell this from my handle.

I also understand the japanese way, is to never, under any circumstances, criticize your governments decisions.

Japans got the right policy in the marine resources area. Sustainable use. I support it.

Along with other countries, if we have improvement in implementation, the policy could become very much a reality globally.

An export trade ban, would have allowed BFT catches within each nations own EEZ, thus automatically implementing an enforced quota (they can only take what they can find), forcing nations to conserve BFT and give the BFT a fighting chance to recover.

You are living in a fantasy world. Just saying "oh gee there is an export trade ban" does not stop anyone from doing anything.

Without governments actually monitoring and enforcing regulations people can do whatever they please. This is what needs to happen - irrespective of whether a trade ban is implemented or management is left in the realm of ICCAT. Until governments actually do what they say they are going to do then we will have problems.

Instead of whinging about the Japanese all the time people need to face the reality and look at the actual source of the problem - if they are seriously hoping for solutions to be found.

Perhaps Japan can contribute to this conservation measure by announcing limits to the amount it buys?

The problem is that a lot of the tuna caught are fattened up. So the weight of the catch and the weight of the imports are completely different.

DNA doesn't change when the fish get fattened though.

    cankaori,

Yeah DNA testing seems like the way to go. The OPRT organization in Japan has been working on this in recent times it seems: http://www.oprt.or.jp/eng/pdf/OPRT20.pdf They note that some tuna actually caught in the Atlantic was described as coming from the Pacific, but the DNA checks are apparently able to detect such tricks.

That's what a trade ban would do though ain't it.

    We need Sustainable Fisheries.

    Not No Fisheries.

    Debucho,

I think they talk about the world, because there are numerous nations belonging to ICCAT and catching the fish, and only through mutual cooperation can these issues be addressed properly.

    paulinusa,

So, measures need to be taken to ensure that those in the fishing industry will be caught and punished, right? This is what regulation and monitoring is all about, and it is the responsibility of governments to take such measures.

    even recreational fishermen exceed limits.

Well I guess they aren't the main problem. It's the commercial operators that governments need to really be watching.

    smithinjapan,

A very constructive approach was just shot down, actually

Come on, the "constructive" approach wasn't going to work well for anyone except the anti-use NGOs who profit from it.

we all know FULL WELL that Japan (which consumes 80% of tuna) will whine and decry the

Wheee, there you go again. "Blame Japan".

suddenly Togo pops onto the scene with a 'we are against this! or for that'.

They have the similar issues. Look at various African countries. How are they going to develop and gain foreign exchange income if countries like the US and EU nations go around and mindlessly ban international trade in everything because some anti-use NGO says that it's the only way to save the world?

What these nations too need is sustainable use. Not no use. That's why they tend to vote with Japan.

    Truth hurts.

Well gee ... what can I say.
