cleo is right in her analysis. Australia doesn't want to acknowledge that Japan's scientific interest in whale biology etc stems from an interest in whales as a source of food.

For Japan scientific knowledge is a means to an end, and research whaling is also research that potentially pays for itself when armed thugs aren't harrassing anybody, but that goes for any sort of legal activity.

Australia could do better if they invested in research on to how to flense the meat off whales without killing them. Then Australians could be happy that the whales aren't killed and the whale eaters can still enjoy a meal.

Even better would be for Australia to contribute the 6 million towards the IWC's SOWER programme. Currently Japan is the only nation providing a vessel to it. Australia afforded sending a gunboat to spy on the Japanese last year, so you'd think they could also afford to commit financial resources to supporting the IWC's SOWER programme before trying to undermine it with this latest PR exercise.

imacat: copying and pasting the same stuff in every thread is one thing but repeatedly attributing statements to me that I never made is another.

I like the Royal Family, but wasn't aware that Prince Charles was an authority on climate change.

The Aussie peso should be avoided. It's going to go down and down and splat with the rest of the Aussie economy.

    Mystie,

Africans exploit elephants too, and people of all race exploit some species of animals. I don't see why you single out Asians.

You offer know proof that "These animals will be extinct before we know it". On the contrary the evidence suggests strongly that elephant populations in the nations which are permitted to sell ivory are well managed and in no danger of localised extinction.

Furthermore sales of the ivory has just generated "more than $1 million for elephant conservation".

People who are for elephant conservation (as opposed to elephant or animal rights) will be pleased to see something good like this happening for a change.

Osakadaz - Yeah well the demand isn't going to go away, and that demand is an incentive for people to not drive elephants to extinction. What also comes with the demand is a will to pay good money for products. And the countries who are struggling with these issues need more cash. So CITES agreed to turn a negative into a positive and allow the use of the ivory on the condition that funds be poured back into managing elephant populations on a sustainable basis in areas where they believe it will work. A legal source of ivory is a disincentive for people to pay poor people in these countries to kill more illegally. Plus elephants die naturally as well. That's good ivory right there as well.

EIA complains, but then they would - complaining about the use of wildlife is what groups like EIA are all about (they prefer the Bambi Disney ideal for the world).

boonme - Supplying a demand should mean that demand for ivory is satisfied to some extent, rather than the reverse.

The problem as it always is is that often people start using these "free" resources without any coordination, and then it results in over-exploitation. Banning an activity seems like a reasonable short term solution, but longer term the smart way to go is to set up a framework in which these activities can restart and continue but on a sustainable basis. This is best for humans and ensures species conservation for our future generations to enjoy.

Good stuff Kei! Another 55 ATP points... should put him into the top 70. Ancic will not be easy though...

Granollers has been in rubbish form recently though. Still, Kei seems to have a 2 day layoff before his match against Hrbaty so I've got to think he'll take him easily, despite Hrbaty's former high world ranking.

Hey I thought Japan was supposed to be the cause of tuna over-exploitation? Someone throw me a bone here...

Anyway Giampiero Beltotto is doing the right thing to actually verify the veracity of WWF's report. After all, WWF did describe tuna as a "magnificent" species and also for a "moratorium" on fishing.

You don't need to ban all exploitation (a moratorium) in order to stop over-exploitation. That's overkill (ironically). You need to ban over-exploitation (and enforce it properly with the funds obtained through licenses etc) in order to stop over-exploitation. And you only need to take less than what is sustainable in order to see the fish biomass recover, not take none at all (a moratorium).

WWF quite probably have found illegalities though, and for that much they deserve credit, but for their irrational suggestions which appear to be more to do with their own self-interests than the interests of tuna consumers they deserve to be heartily disparaged.

He didn't mention probable jet lag, to go with his sore knee and bad cold. Congrats Nishikori! Another 20 ATP points there, but fingers crossed his condition is OK for the next match.

And Nishikori is also through to the last 16.

Ferrer will be lucky to win this year, his form has been crap.

I still can't believe it either! Juan Martin Del Potro seems to be in good form at the moment though, so the 4th round match should be interesting, and Kei has a chance to make it through to the last 8.

He's ranked 126th today, but see what happens when the updated ratings come out :)
