It's really obvious that Japan needs a law stating the minimum age required to be home alone with no adults on the property...people just don't get it.

YES, YES and YES! People who leave kids alone should be charged with child endangerment and be punished accordingly. Seriously, how many children have to die before Japan does something about this?!! Proper education about child-rearing for new mothers and fathers would help, too. ie NO, it is NOT okay to leave kids alone while you go shopping. And having fathers home earlier would be another step towards children's safety and the mental well-being of mothers...

    RIP little ones.

Good news because studies like these will lessen the stigma of addictions and will allow more people to seek help. Bad news because people who commit crimes on drugs will blame it on their brain!

Inappropriate and useless. The government is telling their society that it is everybody's responsibility to recognize a depressed and possibly suicidal person and get them to seek help. When you spread responsibility like this, everyone ends up doing nothing because they think someone else will do it. And the average person is not trained to diagnose depression anyway. Did they even think to ask medical professionals how to develop an effective campaign for such a sensitive issue?

I really don't understand why he wasn't charged with vehicular manslaughter in the first place?! He was drunk and the boy he hit died. What other evidence do they need?

ok, i drink and drive all the time. been doing it since 16. for those of u who have never done it will never understand how safe it is. its much safer than texting on your phone or looking for a cd.

Are you serious?! Drinking and driving is dangerous. Period. Even one or two drinks will impair your judgement and slow your reaction time. There's no need to compare it to texting on your phone while driving. I hope the cops catch you, nail you and revoke your license before you hurt someone.

Okay. I considered the other passengers on the train and now I am going to eat my onigiri and drink my ocha! The message isn't really clear. Is it okay or not okay to eat on the train?

Exactly! It's like the article is saying, "Being with your family is Kizuna. Being away from your family is Kizuna. A marriage is Kizuna. Infidelity is also Kizuna". EVERYTHING is Kizuna! The only thing 'uniquely' Japanese about it seems to be the vaguery of how it's used.

Well summed up!! How can both marriage AND divorce both be kizuna? And cheating on your spouse surely has nothing to do with 'family ties'. What is the real meaning of kizuna anyway?

She is only a 15 year old girl! What are you all saying she is responsible, she is being USED! I know some girls can look / act old for there age etc, but she is 15.

YES! She is a minor, a child, who was likely a victim here. The John is an adult who should know better!

    Some good advice:

Audri: Welcome, Chris! I really appreciate your taking the time to talk with me and help our ScamBusters subscribers.

Let me begin by asking: what is the best thing you can do to avoid the break-in turning into a tragedy?

Chris: The best thing you can do is to make a plan -- before it ever happens. It's very important to think about this now -- when you are calm and there is no danger.

That's why it's so useful to alert your subscribers ahead of time with interviews like this -- so they can have a plan they hopefully will never need.

There is no single best strategy for dealing with this situation.

Audri: What is the first thing you should do in this situation?

Chris: Be very quiet so you can listen. Try to figure out how many intruders there are. Are they coming toward you? Are they ransacking your house?

If you can, stay in the room you're in and lock and barricade the door. Immediately call the police to get help on the way. Shout to the intruder that the police have been called and are en route.

Audri: What's best: should you stay in the house, confront the intruder, or leave?

Chris: Stay in your home unless the intruder tries to get into your room. Never confront the intruder unless in self-defense.

Another option is that if you can safely escape, do it. For example, if you can safely climb out a window and get help, that's great. However, if you sleep upstairs and can't leave easily, then you'll need to take a different approach.

Audri: Can you share some tips regarding what to do?

Chris: First, be prepared. Second, don't argue with your spouse about what to do -- this just alerts the intruders about where you are before you've taken any action. That's another reason to plan ahead.

Third, it's not a good idea to leave your bedroom carrying a weapon like a baseball bat or a flashlight. If you surprise the intruder, they are more likely to act violently.

Fourth, it's always good to have a safe room. It can be an interior closet with a sturdy door and a deadbolt lock on the inside. Call the police. Make sure you have a cell phone accessible from your safe room -- and make sure it's charged. You should be safe until the police arrive.

Audri: Any advice for calling the police?

Chris: Yes, call the police ASAP. You may have to use a cell phone if the intruders have disabled the phone or have taken the telephone extension off the hook.

Another tip is to be very concise and specific with the police dispatcher.

Say that someone has broken into your home, and that you don't know whether or not they have a weapon. Give your address and any instructions to get there if necessary.

Tell the dispatcher where you are (for example, upstairs in the west bedroom), and where the intruder is (downstairs in the living room).

Audri: What happens if you encounter the intruder?

Chris: Don't stay there or fight or argue... run away or barricade yourself in a room and call 911.

If that doesn't work, try to remain calm and speak in a normal voice.

Tip: Avoid direct eye contact if possible. This can be interpreted as aggressive behavior.

Audri: Should you try to protect yourself with a gun or a knife?

Chris: No. Only confront the intruder with a weapon as a last resort to save your life or a family member. Your property is not worth risking your life.

Carrying a weapon of any kind increases the chances that you or your family members will be hurt.

Audri: Is there anything you can do now to protect yourself if this situation does occur that would be helpful?

Chris: Most burglars will run away if they have wakened you -- unless they have been surprised or confronted.

Audri: What is the single most important advice you can give our subscribers?

Chris: Have a family planning meeting to decide what everyone will do during an emergency or violent intrusion. Someone should always try to escape and get help.

Also, if you have a burglar alarm system, hit the 'panic' button. Learn what to do NOW -- that's much safer than when you're truly panicked.

You are smarter than that zichi. SmithinJapan is not saying that the mother is in the wrong. He is saying that the response of mother is passable but could have been better. The response of the dispatcher was not passable though if the dispatcher did not tell the mother to warn the intruders that she had a gun. Why? Not only to save the lives of the intruders, but to save the life of the mother herself. Just because she got the jump on one and just because he only had a knife does not mean that will work in every situation. If they all had guns a shoot out could have ensued that might have been avoided with a warning. And if the other man had a rifle and plenty of bullets and decided to just shoot randomly into the trailer, the mother, with only a shotgun, would have been a sitting duck.

I support the mother and the fact that she is not being charged. This idiot could have easily saved himself by not breaking and entering with a knife in his hand. But it is still worth saying that the response could have been better still. People thinking the response was perfect are either not thinking ahead, favor on the spot executions, or both. Again, I say her response was passable, but only just. The dispatcher may need some retraining.

Agreed. The mother was not in the wrong but she does not deserve applause either. Shooting an intruder should be the LAST resort not the first response. So many things could have been done better: better locks on the doors/windows, better advice from 911 dispatch, faster response by police, a verbal warning, a warning shot.

Authorities declined to share what the boy said before being shot

Why? This seems a little fishy.

How fast did all of this happen? Did someone at least have the chance to try talking to the boy before the police came in shooting?

She said friends who were closer to the confrontation heard the boy threaten to kill everyone.

Does sound like a very scary situation. Still, it sounds terrible for cops to be immediately claiming that their actions were 'justified'. They just killed a 15-year-old boy! Sad, sad story.

Patients who suffer brain death are not in coma. Patients in coma may or may not progress to brain death.

This man was comatose and it is not clear whether he was brain dead or not. Either way, it is sad that in this day and age there are not better options for people who have a loved one in these states. It's just suffering for everyone. Why not let the person die with at least a little dignity?

I think it is much better to just open a window and PUKE right out the window instead of puking, barfing, vomiting all over people there in the trains, just a thought, happy holidaze!

Right! And always carry a plastic bag just in case!

Nothing wrong with posters to remind people of train manners but this poster is just too cute to to deter anyone, I think.

The point is simple. If you love a fashion or a movement or just want to express yourself, why not go for it? If it makes you feel good, happy and alive, then have it your way. Forget the boxes, forget age, forget requirements.

If Japan needs anything to happen to make people here a little more free and happy, then it is to shatter all these tiny boxes that society has constructed to pigeonhole people. Live a little, kick down those walls!

    You said it!!

Many young girls, in their teens or early twenties, in many cultures do things or wear things that are some kind of trend. They are exploring what it is to be feminine and a woman; discovering their sexuality. This is a natural part of growing up. The only problem is if the girl becomes so attached to the fashion that instead of gaining the power and individuality she was searching for, she actually just ends up conforming in another way.

I think it takes balls to wear an outfit like that in public. I would imagine most women who are into it, have a strong sense of themselves. It could be dangerous, however, for naive young girls who are just out to seek attention...

I think the biggest problem in Japan is the rigid roles; the husband should be the breadwinner and the wife should be the homemaker and raise the children. This leads to a separation, almost as if the mother and children are on one side and the father is on the other.

Roles need to be more flexible. Then the father can help with the housework & child rearing and the mother can work outside of the home. This way both parents can feel more supported and they can be more like a team and a true family.

We can conclude that it is important for both husband and wife to express their gratitude to their partner and to find ways to help each other. Sharing the burden of raising children is the secret to maintaining love in one’s marriage.”

Wow! They needed a long-term study to come to that conclusion. Duh!

Since the whaling towns have been destroyed maybe a better use of this money would be to use it to rebuild the towns with a focus on providing jobs in new industries or services, rather than wasting it on recreating an outdated, backwards practice.

Exactly! Japan may have depended on whale meat in the 1950's but not now. Ayukawahama, Japan's main whaling port, was devastated in the March quake and tsunami. Whaling was dying out before but after the disaster surely there is almost nothing left of the industry. Japan is just being stubborn and stupid here. Just let your whaling 'culture' go and give the people of north-eastern Japan a REAL future to look forward to.

Partly agree with ThaiGirl. This is a 16-year-old boy who is a child and therefore should be tried as a child. That being said, if he did indeed commit these horrible crimes, he should be put into a juvenile detention center, where he has some chance of being rehabilitated, at least until he is 20. Then transferred to a regular prison for the rest of his sentence.
