Basically any service industry that services the community, rather than business. Most of them have already been mentioned and might deal with education (teachers), health (doctors, nurses), law (police, judges) or infrastructure (sewage cleaners).

Easy solution: Give everyone in the country a gun, take the police off the streets and make murder a crime only if you were the first to start shooting. Apart from that, it should be everyone for themselves. Now that's what I call civilised! Yeee-haw!

Bebert: "The focus on the next generation of vehicles the auto companies puts a priority on fuel economy for all vehicle classes as a requirement. This will result in sacrifices in safety, comfort, performance, cost, etc"

Why would putting a priority on fuel economy sacrifice safety or comfort? It may affect power, but making an engine more fuel efficient doesn't change the body work or the car interior. The Japanese seem to make great little cars, so why would it be too hard for GM and friends?

What happened to all the true believes in the free market? A truly free market would let these companies collapse as they tried to create demand for their products, rather than accurately read the situation and make products that would sell. Too close a link to the oil industry, cartel behaviour or whatever the problem was. Either way, they stuffed up, they should go. At the very least, management should go.

Why is it that there is no furor against the IWC to amend the rules? Too much common sense?

No, just too much money going into too many pockets. Enough to vote down the other side, but not enough to get the 60% or more needed to get something through. The word "dysfunctional" comes to mind.

You know, I'd be far more inclined to support Japanese whaling if they'd just call a spade a spade and say they're going out to catch themselves some whale meat. It's all this lying and pretending and such which is on the nose. I'd love to see them put a bumper sticker on one of their boats that reads "whale-killer and proud of it", or "honk if you're hungry... for whale!"

And while we're at it, perhaps Sea Shepherd can get one that reads "sure we're a militant, aggressive organisation, but we love whales".

Happy "generic holiday based on a religion that we shouldn't mention incase someone might get offended" day! Oh, and we should really change that day that comes a week later, on January 1st. The Chinese don't celebrate the new year on that day, so we wouldn't want to offend them either. Let's call January 1st "Happy start of a new phase of the western calendar day"! I'm sure everyone would be happy with that! Oh, and I think politicians shouldn't mention what political party they belong to, incase they offend people who support the other side...

Where does it end? If it's a religious celebration, wouldn't it be better that people know it so people can choose to celebrate it or not? It's general knowledge that aspects of Christmas like the tree and such relate more to the pagan solstice than to Christianity. Should Christian's be offended at that? This is all very silly. If you want a more accepting society, you accept things for what they are, and not by hiding them behind generic pretend names so people are deceived.

Every criminal brought to justice is worth tens of thousands of innocent lives. Sarge has the right idea and I agree with him fully!

Survey says 63% of singles want partner before Christmas... Well, they're just going to have to wait until Christmas morning and see what Santa left them under the tree! Who knows, maybe Santa got a bulk deal on partners this year and may just leave one under all the trees of all the good little single boys and girls out there...

Sigh... like watching little children fight. One of the gunmen has spoken to the media. It is a group of INDIAN Muslims protesting over other Indian Muslims who have been jailed. Why ask for U.S. and U.K. citizens? Perhaps because they will bring the greatest embarrassment and pressure on the Indian government, hence (or so they think) bring them closer to achieving their goals. They didn't even ask all the foreigners. One interviewed on TV said they asked for American and British citizens, then when they got enough for a decent number of hostages, didn't ask everyone else (to the great relief of the guy who was being interviewed).

It seems from what has been said that U.S. and U.K. citizens are simply the most global media-friendly of hostages. Most of those already dead died in the indiscriminate shooting at the start, or from the bombings. I think you'll find drone attacks in Pakistan or the war in Iraq take a back seat on this one, and that domestic issues are to the fore.

Research has shown pot has a cumulative effect in the fatty tissue within the body, including the fatty tissue of the brain. Long term use of pot has a greater effect on the brain than something like alcohol and can lead over time to a significant loss of motor-skills and intelligence. Mind you, things like alcohol effect other parts of the body like the liver.

So, a simple answer is that pot is not at all harmless, but then again, what is these days? A little shouldn't do anything to you, but regular use should be avoided.
