This is why government regulation on markets needs to be kept tight. Sports players can't place a bet on their own team losing because it will compromise their motivation to play well. This company selling subprime policies to "widows and orphans" after they already know the business is shot to pieces, and then using shorts to cash in on these same "widows and orphans" when they lose everything they own is predatory and immoral behaviour and should be illegal (if it isn't already).
If they knew the business was bust, they should have legitimately saved the company money by not selling them and thereby protecting the unsuspecting public from policies that were known to be toxic.
The public cannot protect itself from rogue companies and must rely on the government to lay out a level playing field. Companies should be allowed to pursue their own business plans and develop innovations within their industries as long as it doesn't cross the line into exploitation and fraud. It's a delicate balance, but one that needs to found and fully regulated.

Couldn't agree more, although it's a little late to start worrying about the far ends of the spectrum chiming in as they've been the dominant voices in the media and at rallies and such for a long time now. I wonder how anyone in the U.S. can get enough genuine information to make rational choices when just about everything is filtered through lobbyists and biased media commentators already. Stupid things like this, stunts and misled outrage, will never lead to improvement and until all involved find some common ground as a starting point, you're just going to make your whole political system dysfunctional.

Well, from all the things they ban, you can see why these militant Islamists always seem so cranky. Most of the moderate Muslims I know are nice, fun loving people who enjoy things like music. These nutters, though, want to kill anyone for disagreeing with them.
The topic of freedom of speech has come up a lot on this site, so I'll be very disappointed if those who get upset at people wanting a right-wingers blasting hatred out a loudspeaker to quieten down don't jump on this topic with as much or more vigour.

It wouldn't work. They'd just switch to the harder drugs that would remain illegal and continue what they're doing now. Another alternative, of course, would be for people to cut back on marijuana use, which would also cut into the cartel's profits without giving them an alternate stream of income.

...and not enough religion in this wacko group. As has been already pointed out, if they'd actually read what they claimed to believe in, they wouldn't have done what they did. Perhaps it would be better to say too much right-wing conspiracies in the West.
Umm... and what about the plot to kill a police office and plant bombs at the funeral. I have a strange feeling that it might have been that which caused the FBI to "take them down". Just another example of the over-the-top rhetoric that causes the gullible to create groups like the one arrested.

In the past, the Australian and Japanese GPs were the only ones that were shown live on Japanese TV. My guess is that the later start of the race for the European views has made the Japanese timeslot too difficult to fit in.
That Kobayashi crash was pretty wild. That was the second time over the weekend that the front wing had fallen off for no apparent reason. They really need to fix that because he can't steer without it (as the accident showed).

I saw a documentary on this town only a few nights ago. The cartel that control this town controls the flow of drugs into the U.S. (which is the source of their money) and the flow of weapons out of the U.S. (where weapons are much easier to obtain). The Mexican government has no real option other than continuing the fight. Too many people have already died, but the cartels don't care. Commiserations to the families of those who have lost loved ones, and I hope for the safety and the willingness to see this through to the leaders of the country.

I sponsored a child through World Vision once, and after about a year and a half, they sent me a letter saying that thanks to the sponsorship of children in the village where my sponsored child lived, wells and other infrastructure had been built and the locals educated and the town was now successfully self-sufficient and no longer needed sponsoring. They then asked if I wanted to sponsor a new child. I was really impressed with this as it showed that World Vision really was doing something useful.
These sorts of organisations have the people in the right places in the world to maximise donation money, so I do tend to go through them. As for the individual organisations, most now post the exact percentage of the money that gets used up in overheads and how much makes it to those in need, and I only give to the organisations I've checked out and are happy with.

Nice to see the US government finally close one of the holes that has seen it fall behind most other developed countries. Now all Americans have a fair chance of getting health cover and the private health industry can shift forward into providing extra benefits and better care so as to win over customers, as is done in other countries where public health care is provided. So a win for people who were previously denied cover and a win for people who have private cover as they can expect better service.

Thanks to staying and cleaning up the mess they caused in the first place, actually, just as I said in my post (if you'd read it properly).

Why would he want to do that? Bush and Blair invaded Iraq under false pretenses based on doctored evidence. That sort of thing is never right. What they did do right was not to cut and run after the fact. That would have been disastrous. Credit to the former and current US administrations for staying long enough to allow the Iraqi people time to start to rebuild their country. This election is a great sign, especially with most Iraqis voting now along lines of who is best for the country, rather than on tribal or religious grounds. With luck, they'll be able to build their nation into something they can be proud of and which will be a benefit to the region and the world.

That was indeed funny. Doesn't matter what nationality someone is, but spraying pepper spray into your own eyes really does deserve to be laughed at.

Not at all. Nationalism is not always forced, but often comes out of overzealous patriotism. Nationalists can love their country so much, they can want to enforce it on others.
A lot of good comments here, except perhaps the ones like "patriotism=US nationalism=JP", which clearly show a strong nationalistic slant (in this case toward the US).

Thumbs up to the cops on this one. If the guy had walked as he said he had, then there was no problem with him renewing his license that way. They obviously jumped straight in the police car when they saw him try to drive off and got him just 200m down the road.

I find patriotism to be caring for and wanting the best for your country. This can just as easily take the form of criticising your own country if that is what is needed to draw attention to damaging practices or false idealism. As a result, the main aim of patriotism can be the overall improvement of one's country.
Nationalism, on the other hand, is the belief that your country is intrinsically better than others, no matter if your country is in the right or the wrong. Unfortunately, nationalism lies as the main cause for most wars over the past century or more. Many people label nationalism as patriotism, even though they are quite different. Nationalism should never be taught in schools, though it is possible for patriotism to be taught under the guise of civil responsibility.

I think you misread/misunderstood my message. They only needed the last minute entry because BMW, who held the license, failed to sign up in time for the 2010 season. Hence the reasons they became a "last minute addition to the competition after BMW let their entry run out".

The team was a last minute addition to the competition after BMW let their entry run out. Kobayashi will be bringing Panasonic and a few other former Toyota sponsors with him to Sauber, and de la Rosa will bring Santander, so they'll have pretty good sponsorship. Either the paperwork for the contracts haven't been finished or this is just the testing car and they won't reveal the fully kitted out car until the official team launch.
My tip for Sauber.... Kobayashi will leave de la Rosa in his dust. Kamui is very, very fast.
