Couldn't agree more that Brazil is a movie worth seeing. I love Gilliam's films and, even though I haven't seen this one yet, I'm looking forward to seeing it and seeing how they worked around Heath's death.

Still, government leaders and many Muslims have condemned the firebombings, saying it is un-Islamic to attack places of worship.

I wish they would explain that to other terrorist groups working in Asia. Seems just about every attack recently in Pakistan was on a Mosque. There is hope for Malaysia if the majority can stand up and publicly deny the crazy minority. They could even set a good example that may go some way to countering the deafening silence we hear from most Muslim authorities regarding the current 'kill anyone who doesnt agree with us' attitude from some groups.

The governments of the Western nations are as much to blame for making drugs illegal with NO SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE for doing so.

If that comment weren't so tragic, it would be funny. Obviously every ice addict is a healthy and contributing member of society. [/sarcasm]

“They said that they only intended to travel to Afghanistan to help their Muslim brothers who are in trouble, who are bleeding and who are being victimized by Western forces."

Yeah, right. Three-quarters of all civilian deaths in Afghanistan are at the hands of the Taliban. Last I checked, Afghanistan was an Islamic country. If they really wanted to "help their Muslim brothers who are in trouble", they'd go there and fight against the Taliban, who are victimising the people far more than Western forces. Or is it okay in the Islamic religion for Muslims to senselessly kill their own, but not for others to do so?

This is difficult work for the Mexican government, but the only way to defeat this level of corruption is to stand up to it. I agree with the first 2 posters here.

    The idiocy continues.

So you're saying you're rather Obama and Brown send in the troops instead of training the Yemeni police to deal with terrorism? It's been known for some time now that the crazies have been operating out of Yemen and Somalia. Or would you rather just leave them all be and deal with the consequences when they come?

What is truly idiotic is when people complain about the work done in places like Afghanistan and Yemen, and then they complain that enough isn't done to stop the likes of that guy who tried to blow up a plane on Christmas day. Either you try to stop this sort of thing through intelligence and at its source, or you just let it go and accept the collateral damage as an acceptable cost.

Looks like the government messed up by publishing the name of this marine. A very sad day indeed.

I quite like the idea of the billboard, as a bit of Christmas fun. Besides, it's not as if Mary and Joseph didn't sleep together at some point in their lives. How else where Jesus' brothers and sisters born? Mary was only a virgin until she first had sex, after all.

I'm all for taking your beliefs seriously, whatever they are. That doesn't mean you have to lose your sense of humour, though. There are enough angry people out there already without religion, atheism, politics or anything else being used for unfounded indignation. Merry Christmas, all!

What would scientists know about climate change? Every climate-skeptic knows their own gut feeling about left-wing conspiracies far outweighs anything these so-called "science people" might come up with...

I teach a few Iraqi guys (only arrived in the country 10 weeks ago) and, based on what they've told me, the Iraqi people as more than sick of this as well. It is a very small minority of crazies responsible for this and most Iraqi people just want to rebuild their country and leave all this violence behind them. It has the potential to be a very civilised country if just given half the chance.

I would not give one red cent to that Ozzie slimeball and the filthy propaganda his publications and TV networks spew out.

Actually, he's an American citizen (he no longer has Australian citizenship), so he's an American slimeball. Apart from that, I totally agree.

Well, here's a political party that has just doomed itself to opposition for years to come. They elected the least popular member on offer as their new leader and voted against an issue that polls show 68% of Australians were in favour of. Why? Just so they could "be seen as different from the government" as one party leader was quoted saying in an interview.

Talk about a party imploding. The party right has been using the media for weeks to undermine their own leader, then they bypass the most logical choice for replacement leader for someone who is simply not popular with the electorate (as polls clearly show). And the justification given for this? To be seen as being different from the government, not an echo of them, as Abbott himself has said. Looks like Rudd will have a stronger majority after next year's election, then he'll have to deal with the Greens on the environment when they hold the balance of power in the senate (as only half the senate is replaced each election and it's mostly the Liberals seats that are up for grabs under an unpopular leader). The result? An ETS that has to be greener than the government is aim at just to get it through.

Well done, Liberal party, you've not only messed up your own chances, but made the ETS we'll get even stronger than the one now offered. Now, that's forward thinking!

Does this mean that there was global warming back in 1931 as well???

Just means they had the right weather patterns in 1931 to send the icebergs towards NZ. As the article said, "Icebergs are routinely sloughed off as part of the natural development of ice shelves". Nothing too unusual there. It's the rest of that sentence that might interest you if you are so interested in global warming, though... "but Young said the rate appeared to be increasing as a result of regional warming in Antarctica."

But, as bushlover points out, we've got to get past 2012 first!

The problem with MBAs are they are too generic. In past times, managers were promoted from within a company and came with a working experience of the industry and (better still) the actual company. These days most companies hire MBAs for managerial jobs and they come in with short-term goals that they learned in theory and with no real understanding of the industry or company they work for. Great if every company is the same, but that isn't how it words. The results? Workers get all the latest management gimmicks that just increase workload while really giving no benefits, the company goes around in circles or, worse, they lay off staff, require the remaining staff to work longer hours for temporary gain (it isn't sustainable). But if you've got an MBA, you move on before the temporary gain crumbles into a horrible mess and you've successfully achieved your short term goals, collected your bonus and moved on, just like you were taught...

While I am in favour of the concept of electric cars in relation to the environment (we all know just how bad and harmful the air around major roads can be), if the electricity that powers these cars come from coal-fired powerplants or other dirty electricity generation, then they just move the pollution from the streets to the powerplants, thus achieving no real benefit.

I remember last world cup and the team and media were all talking about Japan vs. Brazil as the big deciding match of the group in the week leading up to the first game against Australia. A 3-1 loss to Australia in that first game and it was pretty much all over from that point. Perhaps they should concentrate first on who will be in their group before talking about the semi-finals. They are not that strong a team. If they make the semis, that will be a real achievement.
