While the whalers are running theyre not taking whales. Again if theyre pointing their harpoons at the eco-warriors, they're not taking whales. Use the harpoons once against the protesters and it will be game over for the whalers. All their credibility would be gone and it might even force the Australian authorities into action.

I would suggest the use of spikes, fenders and acoustic weapons should be enough to keep people at bay. Hurling metal balls at the protesters, is a deadly escalation that's not likely to go down well. Will the Japanese authorities be issuing warrants for the arrest of the offenders on the whaling ships?

As imarc points out, the airlines hedged at a very high price. The surcharges should come down once new contracts are made but I guarantee in these lean times the reduction will be as little as possible.

"And there you have it." Again the rightious indignation of the blinkered self satisfied. Shiuu completely misses the point. This guys aware of his problem is and doing whatever's within his power to pull himself back from the brink. Good on him!

Same old stuff regurgitated by the pro whalers whining because Sea Shepherd doesnt listen to their bleating and now witness the whalers desperate claims of terrorism fall on the deaf ears of governments not keen to defend the indefensible.

"Lean Six Sigma. Born in the USA. Perfected by Toyota in Japan"

Great in theory, generally ruined by the practioners. In my business we have ISO compliant systems with the usual built-in in continuous improvements (consistently better for 9 years now). When a six sigma black belt is bored and looking for something to do they claim they can save a million dollars. Following much time spent in meetings, making reports, repeated process mapping, being called a liar, providing data and then more meetings nothing has changed so far (been invaded three times now). The six sigma black belts do however speak 'senior management' and manage to convince the board they're busy creating 'added value' for the business. Bullshit baffles brains I suppose.

"More whaling will increase more marine reserves.Japan is a victim of negative publicity" Pretty poor logic here. Japan would be happy to sweep the seas clear of marine life, either by itself or by paying others. In conservation terms Japan has been measured and found wanting. As for Japan being a victim of negative publicity, Japan has been hoist by its own petard.

I meant to say "a collapse in employment like never before" - soz.

"eliminate the pork subsidies handed out to the construction industry in cahoots with the transportation industry". Do that and you'll see a collapse in employment never before.

Taking on extra debt to cover a ¥12,000 payout is ludicrous. The money should be ploughed into supporting pensioners, education and health.

30061015 - Spend just ¥1,440 on your honey and she wont be for much longer. Those worth keeping are worth a bit more effort than that.

"arguing that Sharp and Hitachi Display alone “could not have controlled the prices" Thats like saying "we did it, but...." If they know their market, they know who else is involved. They could help free up the market and give up the others.

Although the high yen doesnt help exports, it's not the reason for mass unemployment. The average Chinese worker earns 20% of his Japanese counterpart, but China is also experiencing huge lay-offs.

Spending, the driver of the world economy is what's gone wrong, there is none. Consumerism may be evil, but as a driver for development no-one's found a finer tool.

The BOJ has no room to manoeuvre. Cant raise rates to give savers more money to spend as it will strengthen the Yen even more. Cant lower them enough to have an effect on borrowing and therefore spending as there's almost nothing left to cut.

Buying bonds and essentially recapitalising businesses is all thats left. Will it be enough to tide businesses over until market fortunes rise?

Weasel-If any company becomes bankrupct, it is the big debtors that get paid first. Ther's usually nothing left to pay the small fry, ie warranty holders. I agree it would be nice for a bankrupt waratany fund to be set up, but unrealistic. Lets face it, if a manufacturer has gone what do they care about reputation?

Couple of points where I think Tatsumaru is off base. If the Big 3 did go down and warranties become invalid, there are plenty of insurance companies out there to fill the gap selling used car warranties to owners wanting to hedge their risk. Lack of parts again would be only a short term issue as most parts (panels and electronics for new cars excepted) are available from pattern parts makers and new parts can be copied very quickly. Some business for Chines factories there I think.

As for Japanese car makers. Those that produce vehicles in the US would not need to fill the gap instantly as the economic fall-out from any Big 3 collapse would further hit new car sales. They could ramp up fairly gradually and import those parts not available in the US until supplies are restored. Import limit regs can be bent.

As for Chinese makers jumping in. Not in the short to medium term. Their cars are even worse than the Big 3s.

Having said that, it would be a massive loss of face for the US government to allow GM or even Ford to go down. Even though collapse has been well earned, you have to know some cash will be forthcoming. Cant see Chrysler surviving in its current form though.

If this has been going on for some time the contractors should get their contract cancelled. It was cigarette ends that caused the fire at Kings Cross on the London Underground. 30 odd dead and many more injured, what sort of a lesson do these people need?

Good rant from SupLib that ads up to nothing more than whining, doubt and denial.

Its already too late to prevent a good deal of global warming. Weve sentenced our grandchildren and great grandchildren to some real hardship from the weather. Time for all to stop denying the overwhelming evidence and act so that we dont tip the scales beyond survival. The responsibility lies will every individual.
