"American cars and Japanese cars are about perfectly equal in the quality ratings" Been working in the industry many years, American cars dont come close. Even in good times US manufacturers have continually underinvested to cream off cash for execs, staff benefits and investors.
It will be a harsh but sorely needed lesson for the US motor industry if any of the big 3 (read Chrysler) go down.

Dont care whether Tamogami believes what he says or not. Senior civil servants, that includes the military, are in a position to unfairly influence society. These people are employed to do the donkey work for the government of the day and should not play politics. He deserved the sack.

Having industry outside agriculture is a good thing, but unless things change drastically, this company isnt going to help much. Im sure Proton satisfy local demand however as the government control the company, little real progress has been made since its inception in the eighties. The industry was set up more for national pride and to create jobs rather than to compete globally.

All semantics really as at the end of the day you dont have a job, however early retirement is generally offered to those with long service (ie higher paid) and will often include a payment and a contribution to the pension fund.
Redundancy essentially means your job is no longer there and so off you go. Voluntary redundancy is a good way to control layoffs and buy some loyalty. Unfortunately in the current climate if there are not enough volunteers its possible to see some level of compulsion as we are seeing currently with so called 'temporary workers', some of which have been employed for a long period and wouldnt be thought of a temps elewhere.

They came clean in the 1990s when the transport ministry sunk its teeth into Mitsubishi. After that Honda, Nissan et al started to be more open.
The US big three (though for how much longer no-one knows) could always have competed by producing vehicles of equal or better quality, they chose not to invest. Thats a scam in the US thats gone on way too long.

Designers and installers make mistakes but at least they've come clean. I remember a time when Japanese manufacturers would never fess up and issue a recall unless caught trying to cover up with a 'service action'.

K cars arent robust enough and the ability to generate enough solar power to move a full size car is many years away.
We'll see much more efficient deisel and petrol cars in the near term and in the medium term a hydrogen infrastructure is needed and we'll see fuel cell and other electric vehicles come to the fore. I predict the oil industry will be the ones to bankroll that infrastructure.

Someone's going to pay those union pensions, might as well be Mazda. Ford, GM et al shot themselves in the foot years ago and even now continue to pay too much to staff in the US who build poor quality, backward engineered, inappropriate cars.

In some industries, call centres etc, teleworking is rightly gaining ground as an alternative to fixed shifts in large offices. Saves heaps on overheads and fits in well with people not available for the 9-5 grind.
If you can work the hours you want, be there for when the kids come home from school and avoid a long commute while saving your employer money it's a win for all, especially in hard times.

techall - Your sponsorship idea has some merit but wouldnt work as is as theres little incentive for a company to sponsor unknown athletes. However if the Olympic committee were to take a levy from the major sponsors it might help fund the smaller teams.

Cant see any difference between looking at kiddy porn or making kiddy porn, one cant exist without the other. Wouldnt want these people killed as some seem to advocate but want to be sure theyre punished and far from anyones kids.

Dont think there'll be any hostility at all. Cerberus are an investment fund, they buy ailing businesses, divest what they can, turn a paper profit or at least cut loss and then sell on. In my opinion the issue here is whether in the current market GMAC is a business they can make real money on.
If Chrysler doesnt go to GM, Cerberus will do all they can to find another buyer.

If adult women want to wear skimpy, sexy clothes, it's up to them. If done with class and in the right context, I support it, in fact I encourage it.
What I object to is the increasing sexualisation of kids. 12-16 year olds cant resist the glitter of pop idols and other celebrities and want to copy them. Most have no idea what theyre getting themselves into and unwittingly advertise to a demographic they're not really aiming for. They find out of course when some can't control himself oyaji on the train home one evening, takes his fantasy a little too far. Some kids take it badly.
Parents, resist the temptation to give in to your kids too soon and let them have a childhood. Or if thats impossible, arm them with knowledge.

They should do what the likes of German stores Lidl and Aldi do. Buy and supply a smaller range of products in larger quantities and pass on good discounts to their customers. When times are hard its a recipe for success.

Why pay more when a good modern deisel car will cost less, last longer, be more fuel efficient and emit far less co2 from production to recycling.
I can see the point in markets where deisel is in short supply, but in mature markets? Honda should focus on getting their FCX right.

ihope2eatwhales - "crazy this, crazy that, cowardly dog". In some ways you represent yourself well, making your point clear. Unfortunately as soon as insults entered the debate you lost credibility.
Oh and youre wrong. There may be some increasing support for Japans position from small nations bought with ODA but youre fooling yourself if you believe this represents a change of heart by the people.
