Or maybe he's returned on another fake passport?

It seems arrogance comes hand in hand with greatness. It did seem a bit over the top but it's not uncommon these days to see high achievers in whatever field behave that way. It's a while since society has expected anything from it's role models. Ho hum.

The guy's done well, he's earned his medals and a pat on the back. It's ok for his countrymen to bask in his achievement and I think particularly for Michael Phelps, any show of arrogance will be quickly forgotten.

"Rather than chasing this phantom, people could just buy smaller vehicles, if the gas price really hurts them"

It isnt so much the price of gas thats forcing the change as the politics surrounding the state of the air we breath. Hybrid cars are no less polluting than a good diesel car, more so in most cases. Nissan has access to Renault's fine diesel engines so doesnt need to go down that route.
Rechargeable and hydrogen powered electric cars are the way forward now that lithium-ion batteries (amongst others) show great promise. The main issues at hand though are how to produce hydrogen economically and without creating even more pollution, hydrogen and recharging infrastructure and recyclability. Got a little ways to go yet.

From what I saw of the show it was spectacular, I hope the rest of the games go as smoothly and the focus stays on sport. China's set the bar pretty high for London but I know the boys will rise to the challenge.

"now a days the American car is equal to or better then Japanese cars on the market"

Been in the industry for 22 years in Europe, the US and Japan, 7 working for a US maker based in Tokyo. The accepted wisdom is still that Toyota produce the best product overall. In my experience US cars still dont even come close. That said, if you can accept the obvious flaws there are some fun things to own. The Chrysler 300C is a cracker!

In the nineties, before being taken over by Daimler Benz, Chrysler looked at Nissan as a possible tie-up partner. They took a step back when they saw the debts Nissan had accrued at that time.

Now with Chrysler on its uppers, I wonder if this joint venture is a prelude to a Renault/Nissan takeover? After all, Chrysler's venture capitalist owners will want to out the business to someone fairly soon and it's an obvious candidate for anyone wanting to expand their US market share.

The bases are needed to secure the US' commercial and political interests in the area. While there's a quantifiable advantage to be had, the US will cajole, bully or buy influence and resources wherever and whenever it can.

As a smaller player in the game of risk, I'm sure the Japanese government asks itself where its own best interests lie on a daily basis. For now it's in Japan's commercial and political interests to ally with the US and keep the bases. Having said that, with the growing commercial and political influence of China, India and Russia, that link must be weakening.

As for the bases ongoing influence on security, not much, barring something kicking off in Taiwan or North Korea I doubt much will change. For the aforementioned new players, the 'long game' is being played out in Africa and South America.

If there aren't enough recruits locally, then it is a good idea. Especially if it helps open up the labour market a little more for everyone's benefit. If the nurses are not looked after, as skilled workers they can go elswhere.

My concern is the drain on resources in the nurses home countries. They can ill afford to be training nurses and then have them poached by richer countries. A more equitable arrangement on a national level would be if Japan (and the other nations that import medical staff) can pay something toward training the nurses replacements back home, then it will help mitigate the effects of a skills drain.

Asia is still relatively unstable and Japan has shown it can take responsibility for itself by constantly increasing it's own self defense burden. However, Japan is also wise to continue to engage in the policy of 'collective defense'. Having foreign troops on your soil is the clearest statement of solidarity. Essentially, 'if you attack me, you attack my friends too'.

Collective defense along with the policy of mutually assured destruction has so far stopped all sides from taking their disputes too far.

The advantage of having foreign military bases on my soil shares our risk with our partners. Im happy if my taxes contribute to that.

Taiko666, what you say just isnt true, the skills gaps in the UK are profound, especially in IT. I know many that hire foreign staff with poor English skills. My own company even pays for English lessons.

That said, it's not impossible in Japan either. I spent 7 years working in Japan, on a spuse visa, and initially had very poor Japanese. I suppose you just have to find a business that really needs the skills you have to offer.
