"why they accelerated into the path of a larger boat"

Not sure weve seen the same video. I saw the Ady Gil power up its engines at the last minute to maneuver away from an attack. Perhaps while hes detained in Japan perhaps Bethune can find out what maritime laws the Nisshin Maru broke by deliberately ramming the Ady Gill, continuing to hose down the crew of a stricken vessel and then failing to offer aid (which is something Sea shepherd has done when the whaling fleet have had problems).

I can imagine Japan finding itself embarrassed by putting Bethune in the dock.

gogoggo - "The dangers have only been known in Japan publically for about 10 years"

Thats not true. I've been in and around Japan since the mid eighties and can attest to that knowledge being public then.

I dont support smoking but its not fair to blame the tobacco companies for something they didnt do. IMO people know what smoking can do to them, have done since the 1960s but still believe themselves immune. This just attests to peoples ability to deceive even themselves.

Its a shame this has happened to Toyota, Im sure theyve shot themselves in the foot. Theres no denying the underlying quality of their engineering though many would love to even against the evidence.

Toyoda didnt look comfortable. This will be sorted and I imagine a new quality management system is installed PDQ.

Cleo I disagree with you on both counts. Japanese passport holders dont need a visa to enter the UK and no-ones oppressing me, I get plenty of say in how my kids grow up.

The vote gives you the right to elect who wields political power, locally or nationally. Although a permanent resident I wont give up my British citizenship, on that basis Im not wholly invested in the nation. I dont see why I should have a say in how citizens kids grow up?

"People situations change, one may wish to go back to Britain and look after sick relatives for a while without the trouble of visas."

Dont know about other countries but for Brits the idea that giving up your citizenship to naturalize elsewhere means you cant ever go home is a misnomer. British citizens can regain their nationality.

All I can see from those who want dual nationality or voting rights without naturalization is a convenient way home if needed. Thats hardly a solid commitment to your new home.

I cant make that commitment and so dont bleat on about my inability to vote. I consume services and so dont worry about the taxes I pay for them.

Japan, like Britain the US and all those other countries represented in this discussion is a sovereign nation. Why would any government give the ultimate sanction to people committed to themselves and not the nation?

The issue of the multigenerational Koreans and Chinese 'resettled' here is a different issue altogether for which the Japanese government should hold its head in shame until addressed properly.

No. Foreign residents shouldnt have the right to wield authority over citizens.

As for the 'if I pay taxes I should get the vote' argument, if you consume local services like road building, subsidised public transport, street lighting, the police and in some cases unemployment benefit, then pay for them.

"Proven by whom? And how? The data that supposedly proved this has been deleted by those who claimed to have proven it. The same people who have been caught manipulating and lying in order to push their agenda."

Proven by the overwhelming weight of evidence provided from multiple sources by observation, geologic review and records. Not just the guys who have been discovered discussing possibly of suppressing some data in one year, whos data still went on for peer review anyway.

"Here is the reality. Each year, the Earths natural systems release CO2, its used by plants, and turned back into Oxygen via photosynthesis and other things."

In addition to this, man has been digging up fossil fuels and adding this carbon to the attmoshere at an industrial level since the 1800s with huge increases from the middle of the last century. And more, large masses of stored natural CO2 have been released all resulting in a cumulative increase in concentration to over 20% since pre industrial levels. This extra CO2 is beyond the capacity of the worlds natural sinks to absorb. So whether Molinirs minor 4% increase is all the argument, or the overall increase to over 20% is it, the fact is global temperatures are rising and CO2 outputs continue to increase.

Anyone alive today can take the position that theres nothing to be done and if you live in a developed nation you will probably get to live a full and safe life, barring a few weather mishaps. Or you could take another less selfish view and invest in the future of the planet as a whole. For those that are worried about their wallets, the economic arguments for alternative energy production and carbon capture are pretty good too.

CO2 in the atmosphere is not at a level to affect humans directly but that doesnt mean the deniers are right, it is a proven greenhouse gas and should be considered a pollutant.

In terms of effects on people, if you are in a confined space with elevated CO2 levels it will displace oxyge. At high enough levels people experience high pulse rate, sweating, dizzyness, nausea, disturbed vision and at higher levels (20% or more) people experience unconciousness, convulsions and death.

ashika, the only interference with the engine is to time the stop well and place the pistons in the ideal position for a quick restart. As youre using the engine less you use less fuel. There is no damage as there is still a good coat of engine oil lining the cylinders mitigating any wear from the restart. Dont worry about it, if you do a lot of city driving stop/start will save you fuel.

As for global warming...its a fact, you cant argue with facts. Not really believing in it is burying youre head in the sand.

These systems usually work when the car has warmed up. Essentially the car senses when neutral is selected and the clutch is at rest (such as at traffic signals) and cuts off the engine. When the clutch is pressed and a gear selected then the car will quickly restart the engine again. Its a good system and saves fuel in city driving. Engines themselves are generally unmodified, usually the systems require some extra sensors, a bit of software and a stronger battery and starter motor.

I'd like to know whats unique about the Mazda system as some systems (Fiats is one I can think of) can be a little slow to restart.

"People should apologize for what THEY have done, not for what people did in their country previously. Move along people, move along"

Thats pretty cynical. Of course individuals are not responsible for the past actions of their governments but all nations governments carry the baggage of their past, particularly those whos political systems are long standing.

Standing up and doing the right thing is the only way to draw a line under it and move forward. Good move.
