Imo many foreign women come here and expect the same level or treatment and care and when they found out it isn't (often during labour) they start complaining.

This is why my first advice is to go to your country of birth etc to have your baby, where if possible, you can have choices without being judged as being weak. Afterall that is the country for which your baby will most likely have citezenship anyway. I have never understood why, in Japan, having a little comfort if you want it is a sign of weakness. Nothing is wrong with having CHOICES, and nothing is wrong with needing pain killers and asking for them. No wonder the expressions on the faces of most new moms here are rather unpleasant.

Yet we wonder about the low rate of childbirth in this country. My friend is about to give birth here, early out she asked about the epidurals, she was told by her doctor that she won't be allowed to take the drugs, because the painful way is the correct way. Whether or not this is true, whatever happened to choices???

Japanese people seem to have no spacial awareness,

I totally agree. I was in Osaka once when some inebriated person threw up all over the pavement. I was shell shocked when people were walking through the regurgitated matter, they did not see it!! I lost my cool and burst out laughing when one well dressed young man fell smack dab in the middle of it lol

This is surprising. I teach at a junior high school in Hyogo and when the kids go out on the field after lunch they are supervised. Hell!!!! they are supervised going to the bathroom...I don't understand why an elementary school would be any less stringent. RIP litttle girl.

I am from the Caribbean and Japan is much safer crimewise. But if we were to think about all round safety, as mentioned in posts above, here you run the risk of being outed by members of your immediate family than anyone else. This does not happen on such a large scale back home. The suicide rate in Japan points to it being a country lacking in 'mental safety' If 30,000 people died at their own hands back home, (or the equivalent percentage with regards to the population sizes) That would be equal to an entire community dieing. I don't think that they could recover from that. So, yes it is safe but only physically so.

“This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.”

hmmmmm sounds threatening to me. I wd be scared if I were they. Its the word 'likely' that would have gotten me shaking!!!!

Just look around you and you will realize that everywhere in Japan, the message to consumers is “skinny is in.” Skinny leggings, skinny fit jeans,

Hope this isn' too far off topic but, I, as a westerner know that the above quote is true. But I have also seen on many many occaisions, where, some Japanese men cannot help but stare (a few, rudely so) at curvy western women, even the bootylicious ones. So maybe while thin is in, they don't mind seeing curves now and then, actually I think they like them very much.

I am surprised to see this topic From JT. I had said something along the lines of what most of you are saying, and the moderator expeditiously removed my comment.

Wow, well I now realize most of these comments second my feelings about Japan's coverage. I must have used the wrong tone.

@skipbeat I know postpartum depression is a huge problem but this sentence makes me doubt that this was her problem

    **

The woman was quoted by police as saying, “I thought things would be easier without her.”**

I am judging from the trend of Japanese parents, especially moms, who are killing their kids of all ages for selfish reasons. This sounds like one of those times. 'Easier' for her could mean 'more time to hang with the girls, sadly she is really still a girl herself. This child_killing is happening too often.

Well I share the sentiments of some of the comments but, my main problem esp with women's clothes is the size of the clothes, most things are a bit broad and baggy, no shape to them. most dresses are made for an under blouse or two, even summer clothes.Every thing is LACY. The most important however, is the price as mentioned above the stuff is waaay overpriced. I didn't realize how much until a recent visit to New York. I have toned down my shopping since.

This country has a far way to go in terms of seeing the importance of adequate rest and relaxation. That plan isnt even a tip in the bucket. Take the teachers for example, they do not even get weekends off, having a weekend free is like winning the lotto for them. Why is that??? They have to go to school during the Summer/Spring holidays everyday untill 7-8pm, even though there are no kids to teach or much paper work to do.

This is really surprising to me, I thought these schools were in tip top condition. This is because so much care is taken in enforcing child safety measures for foeigner and Japanese teachers/visitors. for eg.

1.No sweets on the school compound 2.no fruits should be eaten infront of kids cause kids can't eat fruits at school!!! 3.no soda/sofdrinks or PET bottles infront of kids 4.No earings 5.No done up nails 6.eat only the foods that the kids are allowed to eat 7.If a child comes in the staffroom while you are on your lunch break...you should stop eating, even if the child is not there to see you.

One would think that something as serious as that radiator would have been top priority if such care is taken to 'protect' these kids on a regular basis. I think some lawsuits are in order.

I may sound harsh and stupid, but I sincerely think foreigners should think twice before marrying Japanese, I am sorry, very sorry to say it, but I think so. My heart goes out to all the good fathers out there who are shut out of their children's lives. Stop marrying these people with their strange norms. A few may be lucky enough to find a good Japanese woman/man, but nowadays I am seeing evidence that many, if not most, foreign-Japanese marriages are ending rapidly, with the Japanese person holding the handle and the gaijin the blade. Do they even have premarital counselling here?

I can't believe this. The Louis Vuitton stores are among the few stores here with security guards in uniform patrolling, making curious 'not-shopping yet' people shudder.....Oh well.

    @Eyeblack

I cannot understand where all this "father's rights" movement comes from. It has no place in Japan. Children don't need fathers, in Japan or the other world, and in most cases fathers are the ones who do bad things to thier kids. The laws recognize this and are their to protect the innocent. If it wasn't so then then we would have a badly country like the USA or England, or Australia.

I really hope this post was a joke and I was too silly to get it.
