Completely agree with the above, and some more. If you have a family and don't have inlaws here, and your company wont sponsor a maid, then ... one of you has not to work - Period.
For the single person, Japan can end up being a lonely place, esp. since most people are expected here to work long hours, leaving earlier (ie. before a 12 hour shift is a surprise to most). Of course, living in or near to Roppongi for a single man, has it's benefits - especially when the trains stop.
For most at times, especially if you're city bound. TV and movie-theatres really suck, which on the flip-side - if you're foreigner here, you'll find yourself making friends more easily since we're all in the same boat, feeling the same things.
Salaries, are low for some Foreigners (as the article states), i.e. under 6 Million JPY - at which point consider living a you were when you were a student if you want to live in/around Tokyo.

Simple math... 9-5 = 8 hrs/day. 9-9 = 12 hrs (difference 4 hrs). 4hrs * 5 days=20 hrs per week. *4 = 80 hrs per month... so if you work normally a 12 hour day then ... you're at death's door already ? The norm in Japan appears to be a 12 hr day, so this guy must have been doing 9-1am every day (sounds like me :-(
Toyota should have been sued big time here. The problem in Japan about working hours is at the employers side - not the Government nor insurers.. All Toyota is saying above is that they'll make sure that Employees go on the regular yearly medical checkup - were the Government simply takes samples of blood etc for statistical analysis, and if anything's wrong with you, your employer can fire you...

Electricty is actually cheaper at night since less are using it.. what do you think happens - do you think the Power stations just stop producing whilst we're all asleep ?
Convenience stores, etc being open 24/7 is actually a part of Japan's society - long working hours mean that you often don't get to eat dinner until midnight - so where do you get it from at that time ?
What I thnk is needed, however, is a limit to the number of hours a person can work per day (if they work in an environment that has a 24/7 operation) and a number of guaranteed rest days per month. That, is only sensible.

I would hope that I'm neither working nor living in one of the buildings that the local Architects falsified 'earthquake'-certifications for. Kobe's disaster should be a reminder for those with short memories. And in case you missed it the early warning system for earthquakes was a bit slow off the mark for the recent ones we experienced here... none of us live in a perfect world, nor can we honestly say that we are supreme or faultless compared to others.

On the subject matter of going to China to help out. I would do so, without question, though once there, the practicalities of asking someone if they needde help in either Mandarin or even the local dialects of the effected areas are currently beyond me, so I would end up being more of a hinderance than any help. China has a huge resource that they've mobilised very quickly to address this very unstaged event, they don't need another person involved, and if they did - it would be for a particular skillset that they didn't have available at the time. I don't see anything wrong with the line of action they've taken towards offers of help that ("tclh")

Followings events such as this, there are few who would have words to properly describe how they honestly felt in seeing such situations unfold. Put yourself in the position of a Parent whose only Child, was at a School that had just collapsed, or whose Partner or Parents are unaccounted for. Can you really think of anything to say ? There just aren't any words.
