Wanderlust - Asimo was developed by a private entity for their own purposes. Thrust me, it is extremely useful as a marketing tool for Honda's Research, where it fulfils it's purpose many times over. Your and other people's comments kicking Asimo show very shallow (or lack of) actual judgement. Surelly it is not Honda's, nor Asimo's job to rescue TEPCO.

smartacus - you're right, the quality from a printer is much better than what you could get with even the best photographic process. Check the Canon pro9500 MarkII (an A3+ pigment printer I'm currently using). It's resolution and colour reproduction are much better than any chemical process, and it's prints are rated for 200-300 years under ideal storage conditions.

Electric vehicles (which were to be powered by nuclear plants with overnight charging) should stay out of the news for a while. While it's nice that somebody is losing time with this, we seriously need to solve the bigger issue of how to charge them and be indeed ecological (no, solar, wing, geothermal and others will NOT DO)

foxie - in Europe they'll ask you if you would like a bra with the panty, while buying swimming wear. And anyway - in many (let's say most) places, one can get along with neither on, and nobody is making a fuss out of it...

We're not dealing with 50~100 grays here, the radiation levels are much lower and so require much less shielding and much less cost.

Well space radiation is about 1-2 mSv/day, as compared with hundreds of mSv/hour in the hottest parts of Fukushima's reactor building. Even so, the cheapest controller costs more than 100.000USD (2-300.000 usually). Just check for the RAD6000 on Wikipedia. It is a very well known system. This is only for the CPU, nevery mind cameras and the other sensors.

BTW cameras - the radiation noise is clearly visible on shots taken by the workers (especially at night)... very scary...

The problem with deploying bomb squab or other civilian type robots is that they are not radiation hardened, and will simply stop running as soon as they approach problem areas. For everyone's information, radiation hardened CPUs (as those used in satellites and the space station) cost hundreds of thousands of USD, for 1/10 of the processing power found in a smartphone.

Those CPUs have many safeguards in place to prevent and recover from radiation caused memory faults and wrongly switched logic gates.

The strangest part is how this absolutely ridiculous book even makes a headline on JT...

The world famous Roswell “incident” was no UFO but rather a Russian spacecraft with “grotesque, child-size aviators” developed in human experiments by Nazi doctor and war criminal Josef Mengele, according to a theory floated by investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen.

Saying that is was a spaceship with pilots from Andromeda is a way more credible and plausible explanation... This Annie Jacobsen sound like being high on some kind of drug...

    22,000 seeders and counting.

Make that 22001 :) - On the other hand, yeah, Amazon proves once again that they're not up to the tasks they claim they can handle. I think they are now almost monthly in the news with some server failure/crashes...

thepersoniamnow - while I DO have a problem for death penalty for rape (as it happens in USA), I surely have no problem for death penalty for a mass murderer, guilty of at least 10.000 deaths.

Although I'm against the death penalty (as the rest of Europe), secretly I hop they just find a tree and slowly hang him... It's amazing how his crimes have been conveniently forgotten in Europe...

Barbaric killing of about 10000 people happened only about 16 years ago and almost nobody in the "civilised" Europe seem to care about it any longer... On the other hand Europeans even now are VERY VERY concerned with some VERY important issues, such as making sure pet-fish are dead before being flushed down the toilet, and enforcing this in a law...

Many people want to donate money directly to the victims of the earthquake, which is very understandable, but it becomes a problem for organizations like us, because it makes it difficult to raise enough funds.

He should be very careful here, as many people feel organizations like "Peace-Boat" have a too big overhead (sometimes up to 10-15% of the funds are used just to run and manage them) and are too slow to react and use those money for the people in need. There were cases (like UNESCO and Red Cross) using the money donated for Japan, after the earthquake, for other purposes (while still charitable, but not towards the intention of the donor).

Nowhere on Peace Boats web-page can we find an accounting page, stating how exactly is the donated money used.

Donating directly to the victims avoids the "man in the middle" for many people (including myself).

but unfortunately, they refused because they think it is more important to donate beds for the victims, not for volunteers

    DUUUHH!!!

paulinusa - my wrong, I take it back - a bit of internet research show that the placenta does not have any proven additional nutritional benefits... although it is sometimes used in traditional Chinese medicine (and probably was traditionally used in Japan as well)

paulinusa - why is it disgusting (or more disgusting than let's say a piece of sirloin)? The placenta is by far the most nutritious piece of meat, and no animal has to die in order to provide it. If you ever witness an animal giving birth (cat, dog, etc), the first thing the mother does after the actual birth is to eat the placenta... I never had it (or this BB product), but I can see the many health benefits it can provide.

Were they trying to avoid panic?

Yes and no. Probably they did not know themselves a lot at that time. The scale of the event was much bigger than estimated/expected and there was lack of knowledge regarding contamination of food and the dangers associated.

Also, obviously they did not want to acknowledge the weakness of their system, and their inability to handle the situation. While it was not purposeful criminal, the way the Soviet officials handles that situation can be only be described as such now.

This is in high contrast to what happened at Fukushima, where the officials did try as much as possible to save human life, at least to the best of their knowledge and understanding of the situation.

While there might be a few cases of cancer in the future (among the workers), it will probably not be at the scale of what happens currently in Cheronbyl.
