I bought it some time ago. While reading the text was fun, listening especially to the male speaker (Jeff Gedert) was definitely not. In most cases he pronounces the English sentences in a way, a high level banker (or likewise consultant) in the USA is speaking to subordinates. If the subordinates do not follow immediately, they have to fear to be fired.

Then the Japanese version of these expressions was much more polite and considerate.

On the other hand, when a female actor spoke English sentences, and another female voice actor spoke the related Japanese sentences, this was much more consistent.

On a sidenote: I had the MP3 CD in my Navigation and Audio system, when I was driving together with my family. Lucky I was able to skip the passages about "bedding down" and "swear words" before my kids could start to understand and ask what is going on there.

Maybe they should have just taken a long walk in the mountains, as was the old custom in Japan.

SO what does it mean, when OL's in the cafeteria are chatting and they keep a hand over their mouth?

Does it mean they are telling lies, or does it still mean they put the hand in front of the mouth to keep the things they are eating from falling out?

Honestly, at lunchtime, most OL's first put something in their mouth and then they start talking. Disgusting.

First, did you send a new-year card to your child and to your ex-husband?

It is Japanese custom when you receive a card, you should also send one back, so if you are lucky you will receive a new years card next year with a picture of you child on it.

Second, did you try to send presents for your child at birthday time, and at Christmas time?

Third, is there something special, your ex-husband liked to eat or drink? Try to get it and send it to him as summer present.

Also there is a Japanese custom to send some gift in return.

How about having more than one Baby? Once the family has 3 children the couple needs to stay together to be able to take care of them. Then for one parent alone it gets very difficult.

yourock at 10:21 AM JST - 5th February since when do you go to the police station to renew your license? I have to go to the local testing centre.

Depends on, which schedule fits you better. For me it was easier to go to the licensing center, because I wanted an upgrade on my license for small trucks up to approx. 8 tons.

For my wife, it was more convenient to go to the designated police station. Not every police station, only the central ones specially designated for it, because one needs to watch a video and has an eyesight test.

Marushka: Oh yes, it is possible to forget. In school I learned first English and then french as second language. Now, more than 20 years later I still use English everyday, but french not. So while I am able to read french texts or understand french movies, I noticed that after trying to study Japanese for now more than 6 years, I have forgotten how to actively speak in french language. But not completely forgotten. It might take one week or so in France and then I should become at least fluent enough to survive in daily life.

Reading about this recall, now I understand better about an incident I had last year in September when I went for a trip from Japan to Germany. There I had a Rent-a-car Toyota Avensis Station Wagon for one week. When the engine was started in cold condition, it went up to 2000 rpm. A little bit high for an engine with electronic control. When the engine was warm, idling at at 700-800 rpm was normal.

When driving in a small village together with my wife and 3 kids and approaching a traffic light going yellow, I started to break slightly and prepared to push the clutch to change to a lower gear (Manual shift car). I was very surprised that the engine went up to more than 4000 rpm, when I was quite sure that my foot was on the brake and not on the accelerator pedal. Anyhow, breaking harder, then a short touch on the accelerator pedal, and the engine was at idling speed. As I was alert and we had some distance to the car in front of us (safety margin) no accident happened. My wife wondered, what had happened. At first she thought I might have touched both accelerator and breaking pedal for a short moment. At this time I could not explain. Now, when reading this article, I got a clue what really happened. A little scary.

Reading this story in the English language Yomiuri newspaper, it makes more sense. Actually the student was invited and came to the house to apologize.

After he apologized, it was still not enough for the group of 4, so they captured and held him. Finally, he was able to call his mother by his mobile on Saturday. Then his mother called police, and he was freed short after.

    nimbus:

I agree, that we don't live in an ideal world, so it is not always possible to follow good advices. Of course best is, if you can keep your car overnight in a garage. Then you don't need to worry about the car being terribly cold.

Next thing is to put cardboard on the front and rear window. This prevents freezing of the window.

The additional heating systems are not necessarily standard (well BMW has a so-called Latent heat storage using zeolith for the high end models), so it might depend on where you are living. If you are living in a (for example) cold mountain area and you don't have a garage, then such heating system might be a good idea. However, when living in an area with mild climate, such additional heating system is not necessary.

Now, who are the main users of such additional heating systems?

Police, Firefighters, military and ambulances. Sometimes they have to keep a fixed position for a longer time, and then it is good to have such heating in winter.

About VW. The modern, high efficient Diesel engines produce sometimes not enough heat to reach a comfortable temperature in the passenger compartment in winter. It took some time for VW to realize that from complaints of customers and then they offered additional heating systems.

Thanks for your reply. Here is a link to makers of such car heating systems:

    http://www.sks-muelheim.de/standheizung.htm

(several products compared on this page).

For ADAC, see some info at:

    http://www1.adac.de/Recht_und_Rat/verkehrsrecht/winterthemen/warmlaufen_motor/default.asp

Sorry, it is in German language.

In short, if you are caught in Germany with your car idling in the morning to warm it up, you will have to pay a fine of 10 Euro. And it says, that heating up the car while idling is not effective.

Well, numbskull does not know, or does not care ... there are studies by the German ADAC, which clearly show that it is best to avoid warming up the engine by idling and standing and instead one should start driving.

On the other hand, it is true that a cold engine uses more fuel than a warm engine. To handle this issue in a environmental and engine friendly way, there exist supplementary heating systems, which contain a small engine, running on the car fuel, which heats up the cooling water of the normal engine. This supplementary engine might use in the order of 1L/hour, so in total in can help to save fuel. Usually it has a remote control and a timer, so it can be started from inside the home, for example 20 minutes before starting.

In really cold countries, the cars have a build in electrical heater, which can be connected to a timer and an outlet of the house, assuming you park your car outside at home.
