    Kanden's reactors up in Fukui are probably helping to light Osaka's neons. Living outside Osaka where lights are dimmer, I didn't miss this sign being off at all, and things sure didn't seem glum to me. Certainly other types of attractions for tourism dollars can be found that doesn't make Kansai's inhabitants captive to some people's desire for nuclear power. Tourists certainly don't care if an unnecessary nuke plant blows its top in a place they're only visiting. Search YouTube for "Nuclear Ginza". Kanden (KEPCO) is just as bad as TEPCO.

    Sad thing is that KEPCO, or Kanden, providing the same function in the populous Kansai region, is not much better than TEPCO. Also run by a bunch of old, coddled, arrogant know-it-alls. The whole nuclear industry in Japan needs a complete overhaul.

    Recently, I went to the yabusame that was part of Nara's Heijo-kyo festivities and people there were calling it not yabusame but "umayumi". My general understanding is that basically these mean the same thing -- riders on horseback shooting a bow & arrow at three targets -- except that umayumi refers to yabusame done on special occasions. Can anyone elaborate on this or clarify/correct this? Is umayumi a type of yabusame, then, just done by the nobility? Or is it perhaps a Nara-related or even ancient term no longer in wide use? Thanks.

    Great game against the States last night! Congrats to Japan's women's team winning a medal for the first time in 32 years.

    Does anyone know whether foreign media will be allowed to cover the meeting, or is this another Japanese media event, cranking out messages that the Japanese public are expected to want to hear? How much control will the kisha clubs have here? The organizers saying it'll be "open to the media" isn't very clear. Also, Sea Shepherd's Scott West initially said last week on their blog that the meeting was to be just between him and the Taiji mayor, so evidently it's expanded since then (supporting NagoyaOya's comment about the meeting not being as structured as hoped). I'd like to think that's a good point.

    MrDog, OK, if you're right. I'll then stand corrected, and my apologies to everyone for passing wrong info. But, do you have any links to back up what you say? Are you sure the same shady folks running Senba Kitcho have/had absolutely nothing to do with the Kitcho apparently highlighted in this book? I do think it's still important to expose this kind info if it exists.

    Remember that this is the same place that consciously lied to customers for more than 10 years about their foods, revealed in 2007...

    This book plug here sounds a bit like an attempt to get customers to forget the recent past, and perhaps get sales back where they once were. Any search on "kitcho" and "scandal" will easily reveal the details, despite the stupid rule here on JT about no links.

    I wish Yahoo Japan would upgrade its mail site. It's always much, much slower than the similar Yahoo US site, and both have lame limits on the number of mailboxes you can create. Have accounts at both but still use Gmail as my main Web mail address. Agree that more competition will be good, which might spur Google to keep on enhancing their site as well.

    Define "noble" here. Mimicking others here, I say it's simply because many of those entering politics look to benefit themselves first (greed being as essential component/characteristic), before society and the constituents they supposedly were elected to represent. It's human nature for some to lust after power, glory, and control over masses of people, not to mention wealth, all easily attainable in politics, some political systems easier than others.

    Honestly, does anyone take Internet Explorer seriously anymore?

    Apparently a lot of Japanese companies still do, like mine for one. No doubt many elsewhere too. Heck, I still see client documents come in, like from big-name universities -- such as a user guide for a computer system, recommending people use any browser over IE 5.x and Netscape. Some firms in Japan have a bit of catching up to do, even for free programs like this.

    For many, wages are too low in Japan too. Haven't had a raise myself in over 10 years now, and am continually expected to work for free (by always expecting professional work at lower-than-fair prices) and take pay cuts as well. Low wages in China by Japanese firms just sounds like part of Japanese companies' export package, except possibly that people in China are louder about getting taken advantage of than people in Japan are.

    These are no doubt some of the same folks who've swayed Japan's version of Discovery channel to show almost non-stop military and war-related crap. Japan's so-called "History Channel" is going that direction now too. America has long drenched itself in such destructive mindset, with the slowly pervasive militarism of society that goes with it, but must everyone? Sheesh.

    This is weird. I would view these people's devotion more like an illness, frankly.

    The Indian restaurant mentioned is probably Ragamala, which is not actually on the "main tourist street" but off Mochiidono-dori, the lower shotengai from Kintetsi Nara Sta. Cut left down a small alley going toward Sarusawa Pond and it's on your right. Wonderful place, relaxing, great food, and you can buy from an assortment of handmade goods that benefit children in India. There should be a signboard on the shotengai, though, pointing the way. Info and map, etc. at http://ragamala.exblog.jp/

    Ragamala is mentioned here, too, at the top...

    http://www.kyotojournal.org/10,000things/225.html

    There's also Ashura, farther south from downtown, which is pretty good too.

    http://tokyo.cool.ne.jp/nara_hakken/Asyura/Asyura.htm

    Both Ashura and Ragamala are vegetarian.

    One I haven't tried yet is Jay Indian restaurant, near Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station. It's also vegetarian, I think.

    Nara is indeed special. I'd recommend it to friends any day over Kyoto if they're looking for peace and quiet as well as history and culture (and good Indian food :-) )

    @misoshiro...

    They are killing the whales, yet they are revering them at the same time.

    They're not revering whales; they're revering empty images of whales. Huge difference, though maybe not among many in Japan.

    @gogogo...

    Looks cool but seriously what is the message here?

    Probably the same message in every other thing used to make the masses ignorant and compliant, ignoring or hiding the larger issues and boosting up the kawaii and escapist factors, like viewing whales as cute stuffed dolls hanging from your keitai or more yen in the pockets of those wantonly killing them and selling them off to dolphinariums, but nothing more. Kinda like how Animal Planet in Japan has become little more than a mix of cute (puppies, cats, etc.) and killing (lions, tigers, etc.). Try to find the somewhat popular Whale Wars. Unless I'm just missing it, I haven't been able to here, and don't really expect to ever to see it air in Japan.

    Ghostly images, 3-D IMAX films, robotic simulacra of nature and life, plastic dolls and video games, theme parks... what a lifeless future. Imagine if the same amount of energy and money were poured into preserving, even nurturing, the real things... Why does there seem to be such an escape mentality in Japan. Not everything is begging to be or needs to be controlled.
