    A committee set up by Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO)

    there's the problem. and the fact that the government is not really holding them accountable and using tax money to help them.

    i have no objection to raising the tax. the question is what they are going to do with the money the raise from it. the government will of course waste it. would make too much sense if it was used to fund health care.

    i wonder if anyone makes a kanji recognition app where you can take pics of kanji and it provides a translation. that would be useful.

    i'm tired of listening to his bs. i say let him be prime minister, fail miserably and get run out of office like all the others.

    Considering it, and doing it are two very different things. The only time I'll believe it is when it actually happens.

    so true. typically, by the time the politicians get thru with it, it'll be so watered down that it will have no meaning.

    setsuden works in japan cause the society is geared for it. can't say the same for the states.

    face it, the israelis and the palestinians are never going to agree to anything. israel should just take what is wants and tell the palestinians, this is your state, take it or leave but if you attack us, we will consider it a declaration of war and will destroy you.

    their salaries should be the same level as public servants

    the problem is public servants are overpaid as well. also remains to be seen what this new organization actually does as they are being set up by METI

    the japanese government's legislative and executive branches of the japanese government have failed the people miserably. the only branch left that can possibly help the people is the judicial branch. tepco knew that a tsunami of the size that occurred was possible. tepco did nothing, i.e. essentially gambled and lost. now they should pay all cost of clean up and damages. 5000 for transportation and 8000 for lodging is a joke. everyone should sue tepco for all damages arising as a result of the radioactive contamination and if tepco can't pay it should be put into bankruptcy and operated under a trustee to insure that the monopoly profits earned are being paid to compensate the damages and not being used to pay the inflated salaries or used for an "advertising" budget larger than sharp's!

    tepco should be put into bankruptcy and run under a trustee for as long as it takes to pay off all damages arising out radiation contamination with interest. as a monopoly, there is guaranteed profit. they should not be using such profits to fund an advertising budget larger than Sharp's or paying elite level salaries..

    i'm gaijin but look japanese and have been here a long time so the only comments i get are how good my english is, while my obviously gaijin friends get complimented on their japanese if they can manage basic greetings. there is a good and bad to both sides. it is what it is.

    did anyone watch the interview. i caught part of it and kan was very open and forthcoming. i though that if he done that real time, he would have had more support. i am not so worried about the radiation coming to tokyo from fukushima. i am worried that they sell produce from fukushima and affected areas in tokyo without complete testing. i am more worried about a big kanto quake and the tokaimura nuclear power plant which is just under 100km from tokyo.

    the author seems to be confusing welfare benefits with social security. people that have paid into social security should be entitled to the benefit from it. the problem is government has mismanaged the money paid into social security so that there is not enough money to pay the benefits and now they want the beneficiaries to also pay the price for their mismanagement. as for how to fix it, i have no clue but personally, i like new zealand's social security system, where i understand that everyone pays in the same, everyone gets the same benefits. if you want a better life in retirement, its up to you to save for it. how you would get there from where we are now is another story but i do think the social security system would get fixed faster if the politicians and government employees didn't have their own separate system apart from everyone else's.

    as for welfare, while there are those that do need the help, there is no such thing as a free lunch which is why the current system is abused. if you want to receive welfare benefits you should have to do something for them, pick up garbage, clean public toilets, do charity work, could be anything that needs doing but nobody should be just given money they haven't done anything to earn.

    its the politicians playing politics instead of looking after the interests of the people. not any different in the U.S. although this is a pretty lame demand. DPJ would have to be crazy to call a general election they would in all likelihood lose.;
