cameras will not stop crime and it certainly wouldn't have stopped that stabbing rampage. if anything it might encourage something like that cause those guys don't care if they caught and may actually want to be on camera. they just makes it easier to catch the criminal after the fact.
as for privacy. if you are out on a public street where anyone can see you how can there be an invasion of privacy? there is no expectation of privacy. if you want privacy go to a love hotel. :)

i'd like to see the stats on who the israelis do catch. everybody knows that security is going to be strict flying el al so you're not going to get any random bombers like this nigerian, most wouldn't even try which is why they have a good record. the thing is, if you really want to, there is always a way around security.

they throw bricks cause they are not allowed to protest peacefully. is that freedom? as for whether they had a just election, that's open to debate.
if they want foreign media coverage they should have their protest outside the foreign media offices.

but one of the problems is that there is no other recourse when you are treated unfairly. business here also take advantage of the japanese nature of avoiding confrontation.
as for hospitals, when they keep you waiting for hours even when you do have an appointment, i would complain too.

if the driver ran a red light, by all means, throw the book at him. but the sad thing is that even if the pedestrian was walking against a red light, the driver will still be penalized.

let's not stop there, stricter enforcement of all traffic laws is needed. including against mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. one of the big problems is that they have laws on the books but only enforce them selectively when it suits them like during traffic safety weeks.

complaining of the lack of chivalry is a kind of reverse sexual discrimination. what she should be complaining about is the lack of common courtesy.
also, i've offered my seat to older women and have not infrequently been refused but what irks me more is when these older women give the seat their perfectly healthy grandchildren!

i don't think they can run the trains cause of the noise as they do run thru residential areas quite close to houses. it would also put a lot of taxi drivers out of work. btw, if you think the fares are too high you can negotiate. i had a friend who used to live near yokohama and would just go down the line of taxis waiting in roppongi at 3am and ask them to take him for 5000yen and he would always find someone, except during bonenkai season.

it make a point, he shouldn't have tried to avoid justice. if he hadn't in all likelyhood he would have served out his relatively minor sentence and been done. but he didn't and now has to pay the piper.

my brother in law is director of a small company and told me more than once that he has had new hires quit after their work is criticized, not even yelled at or anything. some don't even call to say the quit they just don't show up or answer their phones. but personally, i don't think its the education systems, its the way they are raised by their parents.

actually, i don't think its about sexual equality and its unclear what argument the author is trying to make till the very end where she states:
the problem is that men and women can never be "equal" its a biological fact. women get pregnant and have babies, men don't.
