    Disillusioned-

I wonder what effect this phenomenon will have on the divorce rate in the next decade.

it's funny you mentioned this.. I was listening to the radio the other day while driving and they were talking about how divorce rate has risen after the earthquake because the disaster showed their partners' true personalities and some of their spouses chose to help their own parents rather than their immediate families..

Whiskeysour...you have been married 3 months now....let's see how enthusiastic you are after one or two years when reality sets in HARD!!!

can't you be happy for whiskysour? being enthusiastic isn't all about happy marriage.. the hard reality isn't always bad, either.. marriages are not all about happiness and smiley faces, but when you overcome those hard realities together, you are a better couple :)

congrats Whiskysour!! it's work to keep happy marriage, but the work is definitely worth it :)

Foreign women have to maintain their A-game while living among Japanese ladies with their petite figures, flawless skin and polished sense of style

i don't understand why this person is putting all foreign women in one certain category... what makes Mr. Charles Ayres think foreign women are not petite? what makes him think foreign women don't have good skin? what makes him think japanese women have better skin?

some young Japanese guys make us look like savage, hairy wildebeests in comparison

says who??? i never thought that way..

it's just simple.. whether you are japanese or foreign, or mixed like me.. it doesn't matter.

So, did he assault her when she was an infant, or is the writer trying to claim that a 2-year-old (a toddler) is an infant?

That's just because JT first said the abused child was 1 year old in the headline, then later corrected to 2 years old, and then forgot to correct the term infant to toddler.

The guy (part-time worker) was with the girl alone while the girl's mother was out working. He said that girl refused to eat so he bit her stomach and injured her. Later that night, she fell unconscious while in the bath, and the guy called the ambulance (the mother was still not home at that time). The guy told the doctor she was drawn in the bath but the doctor saw bruises and his teeth mark on the girl's stomach, reported to the police.

    RIP little girl.. so sad.

    miamum-

I certainly do not think your marriage is in trouble. Sure, there are problems between you and your mother-in-law, between you and your husband, between your husband and his mother, but you should not let it affect your marriage.

If your mother-in-law wants to complain, let her complain and you should just remember that she is not always right. Listen to her complain like listening to a little girl complain :)

I remember my grandmother whom I LOVE and my mother did not get along too well when they were younger, and my grandmother used to complain about whatever my mother did -- her way of cleaning, cooking and all that.. As grandma got older, she started to mellow out and she started to show more appreciation to what my mother did/does, and she now says thank-you to her all the time.

For older Japanese people like your mother in law, it is very difficult to understand western culture and they tend to think all Japanese food is healthy while all western food is junk. They complain not because they don't like the west, but the fact is that they do not know much, and they really don't like anything unknown to them.

I hope your husband is a good listener and lets you complain :) Good luck!!

They did leave. Many Japanese I know fled Tokyo.

i say so what? people who wanted to leave left, people who wanted to stay stayed, whether they are japanese or foreign.

Posted in: Why did those foreigners who decided to leave Japan in the aftermath of the March 11 disaster come in for so much derision from some people who labeled them with words like 'flyjin?'

Nobody should blame on those who left.. they had their own reasons to leave, and those who stayed had our own reasons to stay.

Some of my husband's relatives in the U.S. called and said things to make me feel really bad for not leaving and they said I was very irresponsible for not taking the kids out of the country. I told them that I (and husband) have work, kids have school, we have our whole life here.. If we were visiting Japan for a few years, it would have been much easier to leave, but when you have your whole life here, it isn't that simple. I also told them that I was getting every possible information around me both in Japanese and in English, and I promised them that when we thought it certainly was dangerous to stay, we'd leave.. but right after the earthquake, it just wasn't the time. They told me what I was doing was not what any good parents would do, and made me cry.. but guess what.. I am glad I stayed with the family. I did not want to panic and get the kids out of Japan quick, because when parents panic, kids can sense something dangerous and make them nervous, and I didn't want to do that.

We are still worried about the radiation and all that, but we are glad that we tried our best to have our kids continue their normal daily life and they see their friends in school everyday..

Nobody should make people feel bad for leaving or not leaving. Everyone is in different situations and everyone has their own reasons..

Relief aid is not the U.S's job here? Well, I am very disappointed to hear that from an American person, because the Americans I work with are very proud that his mates are doing what they can to help out.

While a small portion of them pulled back, the majority of the members taking parts of the humanitarian operation continued and they are still working round the clock to help out. Someone on this thread said they are working like 16 hours straight.. Let me add something else. Each of the member working long hours and working shift schedule, so the U.S. military (Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force) is working 24 hours every single day from the very next day of the disaster.

Not only the U.S. military personnel but also many of the local employees working on the U.S. military bases are working round the clock to help out the operation. The U.S. and the Japanese are working together to help out, and I do not know how anyone could say negative thing about this operation tomodachi.

It is understandable that there are people who have issues with the military existence but this is a whole different story.

Japanese government should seek families that can temporarily take those babies to look after.. I would love to be one to take care of any baby that cannot be taken care of by their parents because of the disaster..

RobertCB said -- I'm actually pretty disappointed in the US forces here. I thought we would see more from them.

Not everything the U.S. military does is reported, and what's reported is not everything they do.. They've been doing LOTS and you don't see it because you are sitting in front of computer/TV.

assuming you're a guy, and i praise your knowledge about Japanese bra sizes and etc :)

well, it IS actually true that it's much easier to find smaller sizes here in Japan and when you have large breasts, it isn't always easy to find the one that actually fits nicely.

i always go to the same store to get bras.. was hard to find the good place to shop for bras but once i found it, i am sticking to that particular store!!!! :))

sure, there ARE large sizes, but like UsagitoSaru said,

causing the bra to be pointed instead of rounded.

this is true.. based on my own experience..

can someone clarify for me - is this "care worker" like a babysitter or childminder?Or is she doing the job for the local government because the parents were somehow negligent?

this woman is a Hoiku Mama -- It's like your home is a small daycare. You are allowed to have up to 3 children under 3 years old. These Hoiku Mamas are very important as there are just not enough daycares out there and while being on the waiting list, parents still have to work but cannot afford to put their babies in a private daycare -- then a Hoiku Mama is a good option. Hoiku mamas have either a nurse license or a child care license, and they work for the city/town.

Junnama- Yes. Agree. Also, a beautiful Mexican lady and Mexican beauty sound different to me.. She's a Mexican beauty is more like talking about her heritage while saying she's a Mexican lady is saying she is Mexican.

she is a very beautiful MEXICAN lady

I actually thought that comment was a bit odd, too.. I mean, she's an American. She isn't even an immigrant, her parents were. So, even though it is clearly stated that she was from Texas, to say she's a beautiful Mexican lady is a bit strange to me..

Even if the girl was IN the room when the mother went outside, as I said in my earlier post, 3-year-olds can learn things so quick and they can easily unlock the door/window, and the girl clearly did not understand she was not supposed to go on the balcony by herself. Mother should have taken both the girl and the baby outside with her. Whether the girl was in the room or on the balcony at the time the mom went out, the fact that the mother wasn't careful enough doesn't change. Might sound harsh, but I have a 3-year-old and I know what they are capable of and how stupid they can be sometimes.
